Hello everyone!
It's a little embarrassing to admit, but I'm on of "those" people who never really played BG 2 before Image IPB
So now that I have some spare time in the summer I decided to give this game a go. But I got a few questions for you guys:

1. Is my character a good choice?

He's a Berserker, grand-master in long sword and 1 point in two weapon style, chaotic good.

STR: 18/00
DEX: 18
CON: 18
INT: 12
WIS: 14
CHA: 3

Is the low CHA gonna hurt me?

2. Any general tips for a beginner?

3. I'm uncertain about many things. Like which weapon is the best, or which NPCs I should take, or am I gonna screw up somehow (which I usually do). So my question is, should I surrender to the temptation and look for some online guidance, or just play it completely clean and get frustrated later?

1.  Yes - a very good choice.  For a new player the magic system can be hard to get to grips with and a fighter type is easier to play.  In addition the berserker's rage gives you great protection against opposition magic users.  Your stats are excellent and, no, your low charisma will not hurt you.
2.  - Get a group of different types of characters to join you - you'll find a number of choices if you just explore and talk to people.
- Use the pause button in battles - both as a means to make sure your characters are doing what you want and to give you a chance to think about your strategy.
- Also take advantage of the game's autopause function, e.g. to pause if you see an enemy.
- Running away is good.  It is quite possible (in fact likely) that you will get into combats with opposition that is much too strong for you.  However, you will normally have a chance to run away and fight again another day.  If you do then don't forget to pick up the equipment of any dead characters - you can raise them yourself or pay a temple to do this later.
3.  As you have grandmastery in longswords then use them.  However, you should also have a missile weapon of some sort available.  Quite a lot of fights can be won without any danger by having opponents chase one of your characters while you shoot them up.  How you play is up to you - just do whatever gives you most fun.  Personally I like to go 'blind' into areas at least once for the extra thrill that gives, but will read a walkthrough of the area later in order to see what I missed.  If you do find that you are getting killed a lot and find that frustrating then by all means read up on situations or ask more questions on the forum.

Your character is fine, he will be a strong character.

you only get 1 time through BG2 without spoilers and plots, so I'd try to do it as much as possible WITHOUT any advanced reading or walkthroughs, unless you really get stuck to the point you can't continue. Even in that case, I"d recommend posting in the non-spoiler forum asking for hints (but not full "do this, then do this, then do that exactly like this") if you get stuck.

As far as NPCs go, take a broad mix of classes, including at least one-half cleric/druid for healing, at least 1 full Mage. You'll only need one-half a thief, or a thief who has dual-classed because you really don't need much thief to beat the game (you can bash or use the Knock spell for locks, but it's detect/remove traps that you'll want some thieving skills for).

There are a few NPCs that fit into the "standard" good-alignment BG2 party - like Jaheira and Minsc. i'd recommend taking them - lots of banter and Jaheira has good quests and plotlines the first time through.

Given that at this point you'd have

Berserker
Ranger
Fighter/Druid

i'd recommend filling out the mage/thief aspects. Let's just say there is one character who you will be separated from - leave a spot open for them when you go to rescue them.

Any of the thief characters are adequate for thieving - Imoen, Nalia, Jan Jansen, Yoshimo. Try to get at least 1 of the full or dual-class wizards in your party (Imoen, Nalia, Jan, Edwin)

be careful of mixing alignments and personalities, some party members will fight with each other.

I'd have this

Berserker
Minsc
Jaheira
Nalia
<open spot>
<open spot>
where you can fill in the open spots with whatever you like (just add cleric, mage, thief, etc). You've already got 2.5 fighter-types, but if you like that style add more!

1. Awesome choice of a first char. Starting low cha won't hurt. But try to get high cha when buying/selling to merchants...but you can have one of your companions do the talking.

2. Go into "options", "Game play", "autopause" here you can select when your game pauses. I like to pause on enemy sighted, character death, trap found, character's target destroyed and spell cast. By pausing on these conditions it allows you to waste no time between attacking different enemys, or not walking into that trap you just found! Once you direct your chars to do something then hit "space" to start time again.

Save often...hit "Q" for a quick save. If you're having too much of a problem remember you can change the difficulty in the "game play" section.

Don't be afraid to use potions, wands and scrolls

3. Run through it as far as you can without spoilers. Most of your companions will have quests of their own so you can play the game several times before doing all the quests.

For a first time, try to get a healer (cleric, druid), thief, tank (fighter, barbarian, paladin, ranger) and arcane caster (sorc, mage). I personally like druids but for a first timer you might want a cleric more.

On charisma: keep your eye open for magic rings. Fairly early in the run you can find one that will take care of your low charisma issue

Thanks a lot guys, seems like a really nice forum here.

I just have one more question - can I get evil NPCs too in my party even If I plan to be goodish?

Yes

But getting them to stay may be a different story

Yes, but bear in mind that if your reputation becomes too high (19 or 20), they will start to complain and may even leave your party. Alignment isn't really a major factor in this game, you can have evil npcs perform good deeds just fine.:P

And I must say, very lucky to get that 18/00 str! Though personally, I would have put 3 points in 2-weapon style at the start so you can wield 2 weapons with minimal penalties.

Long swords are great weapons for an elf and will serve you but not my first choice for the other races.
DON'T USE TWO WEAPONS until you get at least two points (three is best) in two weapon fighting!
