Why? Are you surprised by the factual information my post was laden with? Or are you butt hurt that my opinion doesnt run parallel to your own?

Kids on these forums really need to learn the meaning of butt hurt.

Butt hurt is where someone doesn't know how to take a joke and they take the joke as if they just took it up the butt.
Unless of course you were joking and are not stupidly racist to the whole batarian species.

Racist! And against a fictional non-existent species! How cute.

I like Batarians, I didnt mention that because it wasnt relevant. Just because it would carry a certain coolness factor doesnt mean it would fit in the story, which a Batarian squad-mate would absolutely not.

Batarian society is rife with anti-human sentiment and propoganda...and that was BEFORE you destroyed one of their planets and murdered 100k Batarians...gee...I wonder how well that one is gonna play in the typical Batarian mind-set? Well. At least it was quiet and no one knows you did it...not like you are going to be put on trial for it back on Earth or anything.

Of course, undoubtedly you probably think all Batarians are privy to the same information you got from playing ME video games and know what a just and honorable person you are! Fighting for the survival of all the galaxy, right?

I think you need to educate yourself about isolated societies and the impact of a thorough propoganda campaign.

I'd love a Batarian squad mate. I'd like a Raloi squad mate, but that would probably lead to a lot of exposition about the Raloi instead of character development.

Edit: Then again, Thane had both Drell exposition and character developement. I withdraw my objection.

I like this one.  A squadmate that fights melee by omni/bionic blading enemies dead and blinking in and out of combat to prevent getting hit or shot.

OMG I WANT A REAPER SQUAD MATE. Would you have issue with that? Because aside from the Reapers, Batarians are the foremost enemy of the Alliance.

You don't have to be so challenging to people.

Please keep the strawman arguments to a minimum shall we?

Ugh, why the hostility. You're coming across as really obnoxious.
What I believe is that not all batarians should be painted with the same brush and that it's likely there are reactionaries within their society.
I also believe that the civilians within the society should not be dismissed as criminal, slaver scum that deserved to be wiped out like the rest of these forums do.

I think you need to educate yourself about isolated societies and the impact of a thorough propoganda campaign.

Yes thorough propanganda campaigns like those within N azi Germany definitely didn't have reactionaries.
Except for of course the Swing movement, the Edelweiss Pirates, the White Rose University students...

Well the whole Geth thing was addressed, wasnt it? You did play ME2 right? I find it funny that I never mentioned Legion or the Geth at all...you brought that into this conversation on your own.

I would agree that the reactions to Legion outside of your squad didnt live up to what they should have been.

Obnoxious? Thats exactly how I would have described your intial responses, given all I did was state the obvious and you responded by trolling my post...Most races dont have much love for the Batarians, especially the Alliance and Humans. With good reason I would add.

Sure, not every Batarian is a slaver/criminal/terrorist/all around bad guy. Just the vast majority of those Shepard has ever met. You also overlooked the Batarian point of view on Shepards actions, which in my opinion should carry just as much weight as the Human/Shepard perspective when discussing a potential Batarian SM.

I would prefer to stick to the Soviet propoganda example I had used earlier, or the hate for Communism that is still thriving in America today, twenty years after the fall of the USSR. But I grant you your brownie points.

A batarian could be interesting someone like Balek from Bring Down the Sky DLC. Or someone else Shepard crossed paths with that has them at odds but they work together to take down the Reapers. Then again what Batarian would help Shepard after the Arrival DLC? They already seemed to hate humans before that and now they might think the Reapers taking Earth ain't so bad.

Still hostile I see.
I brought up the geth because it's very much the same.
A species that one would naturally think is 'against Shepard' is suddenly expanded upon and we are given decent reason to believe that 'some' are in fact willing to work with Shepard.

Individuals within these races are racist towards batarians.
Not the races as a whole.

The vast majority being a tiny minority of the batarian mercenary/slaver population.

I did not.
I simply acknowledged that it's incredibly likely that there is varying opinions within the batarian populace.

Doesn't really make a difference to me.

This one senses agitation and impatience.

Does this one wish to have a "hugging" session?  This one has studied human societal norms and the act of "hugging" is said to calm and console one down?

You strike me as the type of person who would go up to a dog and yank on its tail...then react with utter disbelief when the dog bites you and proceed to complain to its owner about what an aggressive dog they have.

There are very important differences though. The Batarians are a relatively known, the Geth were not. The council had years (hundreds iirc) of experience with hostile Batarians. That wasnt some splinter faction of Batarians, it was the actions of their representative government.

Unless you are suggesting BW create a splinter faction of pro-galactic unity Batarians, which would strike me as redundant now after the Geth/Heretic schism.

GodWood wrote...

I would guess that there may have been some Americans that werent hostile towards the Japanese immediately after Pearl Harbor...but guess what the prevailing public opinion on the subject was?

GodWood wrote...The vast majority being a tiny minority of the batarian mercenary/slaver population.

See my first response in this post. Your assumptions are in direct contrast to established historical facts of the ME universe.

GodWood wrote...
I did not.

See my second response in this post. Is it possible? Certainly. Is it likely that prevailing Batarian public opinion of humanity and Shepard specifically is going to be positive after the events of Arrival? Almost certainly not.

GodWood wrote...

You missed the point. 20 years after the fall of the USSR, a highly visceral hatred for communism...which at its core is just another form of economics/government and not inherintly "evil"...still is rampant in America today. THAT is an effective propoganda campaign. They dont even exist anymore and we still have politicians using them as boogeymen in politics.

edit:

At any rate, I've finished with this arguement. I am dealing with knowns and established fact of the ME lore. You are operating within the "what if?" sphere of unknowns. My original point still stands, Batarian SM makes no sense right now.

Who says that new races can't have good characters?

I think batarian is totally possible, look if an alien race attacked earth during the cold war you would want to team up with the soviets to better your chances, only an idiot wouldn't. What kind of idiot would fight his enemy on earth AND against the aliens at the same time? Besides we havent seen the other side of coin for batarian, except in some very small cases, so squadmate would do alot in this case. Otherwise they remain as 2 dimensional as they are portrayed, but i guess some people like it that way.

We did get a krogan in both games, and they are a war wacky, blood thirsty race that are supposed to hate everyone, remember.

Honestly i'd really like to see a Prothean squad mate.Since the fate of the science team was left open ended in ME1 it's possible they survived. Legion was a great character in ME2 (hoping to see a lot more of him in ME3) and i'm confident bioware could do a similar job with a prothean character.

Yes its always possible for organic life to survive without a source of food or water for 50,000 years totally unnoticed by the races that now occupy that station. Good point.

If there is one, it'd have to be either a batarian or a new species. They're not going to make an entirely new powerset and an entirely new weapon set with an entirely new suite of animations rigged to an entirely new skeleton when they can use the existing bipedal model instead. A few species could make sense as recurring NPCs - it would be pretty easy for a hanar or volus to hang out on the Normandy manning a console, and imagine how neat it would be to earn the use of a Soul Name - but even then there are some serious obstacles to some species. Elcor speech would simply not be tolerable in large doses, rachni don't speak at all...

Shame, too. A Shale- or Dog-like character with a completely unique ability set that doesn't use the same loadout/six class system everybody else does would be a pretty neat way to shake up gameplay, and could offer good insight into the thus-far-unexplored movers and shakers of the MEverse (I really hoped Thane would be a better window into the hanar, but alas).

Didnt you hear? Batarians are really filled with fuzzy love for Hoomans. We've only just witnessed a very tiny faction of the baddies who are intent on poisoning us, ramming asteroids into our colonies or attacking them head on for slaves, annexing asari worlds and bombarding salarian colonies. Most of them really are stand up folks and borderline hippies.
