Ok playing S/S is different than what I tried in Origins....I assume same stats apply? 38 STR and Max Dex?
I'm not sure what tree to take... I know sword/sheild...but defender? vanguard? I was hoping to spec a champion with the boost/rally tree....

Nope. DA2 uses completely different stat allocations.
DA2 S&S is similar to a DA2 2H- basically max strength or max willpower, depending on whether you are a berserker or not.
I'll leave someone else to explain the trees.

Really? So Dex isn't a factor at all in DA2 like it was in Origins?

Hmm is this your first DA2 playthrough? I can quickly run through the basics if you're interested (so don't feel offended if you're actually a pro haha)
In DA2:
Strength = Fortitude (resistance to force)
Dexterity = Critical Chance
Magic = Magic Resistance
Cunning = Critical Damage + Defence
Willpower = Stamina/Mana
Constitution = Health
For each class one of these is the base attribute which determines their base damage and improves attack. (warrior=strength, rogue=dexterity, mage=magic)
This means that unlike in origins, where strength was used for things like daggers etc, rogues get all their damage directly from dexterity.
classes also have different secondary attributes which is required to equip items (e.g. a rogue will only need dex and cunning to wear armour. don't ask me how that works- i suppose they need dexterity to slip into it and cunning to be...smart enough to figure how get it on? haha)
This means that strength will be the most important for attribute damage-wise for warriors, improving damage and chance to hit. However, berserk allows you to use your stamina (i.e. willpower) to deal more damage. This means that a berserker will find it beneficial to pump willpower as well as strength.
Dexterity and Cunning still have their uses, but generally speaking it's better to pump your base attribute.
In terms of the champion spec in origins- if I remember correctly they had a pretty nice buff from rally and an crowd control force push war cry? Basically you'll want to go into the vanguard and defender trees to pick up the properties you want to convey to your companions (e.g. +25% crit damage) and use rally to give it to them.
You could also consider using something like battle synergy to convey more buffs. Buffing will probably be a very minor part of hawke's role so you'll have to decide if you want to make him a tank or a dps. I personally think that dps hawkes are the best/dps is the best fullstop, but some people like slower longer fights so I suppose having a really good tank could be useful in that... :/
Hope this helps.
But yeah, Arelex's build should get you started quite nicely.

All depends on how you want to play Sword and Shield. S&S with High WIL for a Berserk and low HP may be difficult if your playing through your first time throughon Nightmare. If you want to be a damage sponge, you definately will want to go STR/CON with enough WIL for about 220 Stamina. There are enough abilities that allow you to regain Stamina for each kill and having low Constitution isn't necessarily easy unless you know how to effectively deal with Assassins, Blood Mages and other high DPSing enemies. You can utilize S&S to effectively stun lock enemies as well as an alternative form of playing.But again, it's all up to your play style.
