I don't want prequels. I would prefer something set after the Shepard trilogy. It's a big galaxy and there are lots of stories to tell; we don't need to doggedly adhere to what's currently in the Codex, otherwise we'll eventually run out of content. And honestly, we already know how all those events turned out. Kinda boring, yeah?
Personally I'd like to see some political intrigue that would give us an opportunity to explore in greater detail how each of the species interact with the others. Right now it kind of feels like humanity on one hand, and then all the other species lumped together on the other. Do the asari always see things the exact same way as the turians, and salarians? And vice versa for each of them? They can't possibly. They've got to have their own interests and they must compete on some level. A futuristic spy thriller type story could really go deep in this regard. And it would be a perfect opportunity for more shooter action, dialogue, cinematics, romance, and a sexy personal space yacht.

yeah as a rule, i kinda hate prequels. i mean sure theres some good ones out there, but you already know whats going to happen, the general story is already laid out. its just alot less interesting than new events.
if they continued the mass effect franchise, i'd like it to be with side stories. not necessarily galaxy important things like mass effect and the reapers, but maybe about a colony dealing with pirate attacks and thats the entire game? or maybe a terminus systems and citadel space war?
or maybe you control a small crew sent out to activate inactive mass relays and explore whats beyond? star trek style making first contact as a representative of the citadel council?

I've actually thought about a First Contact War game as an interesting possibility, but prequels are sticky business, and I don't think they'll do it because they could probably only squeeze one game out of it. I think I would prefer to see something new a few decades after the Shepard trilogy.
This. I think the ME setting has huge potential for a very compelling politically-driven story, and I think going in that direction would allow them to make a strong sequel trilogy (that's my hope, not necessarily what they're going to do) without having to come up with a bigger and badder galactic arch-nemesis than the Reapers.

I generally despise prequels as well, but a FPS/TPS prequel with Nihilus would be pretty damn awesome.
I don't think he's as fleshed out or has much of a backstory as Saren does, which would give BioWare the luxury to make up one and throw in subtle hints and speculations about what has already happened in the ME series. Not to mention I would love to see that run in he has with Samara.

Yeah, agree. I don't want a prequel. Both Marshalleck and Clonedzero had good ideas, possibly mix two of them together. After the Reaper wars, the galaxy is likely to be in a somewhat chaotic state. There will be lots of effort into recolonisation and being in charge of recolonising a planet with a politcial plot in the background sounds pretty good to me. Maybe even have a rogue surviving reaper in there as well.
It's difficult to talk too much about this because we don't know how ME3 is going to end. I think ME4 should consider using a cannon ending to ME3 if the endings are disparate enough.

I would like to see a game about the Protheans and how they fell to the Reapers. Or maybe even the first organic race who created what would become the Reapers. It would be a risk of course because people get easily wierded out when a game or book doesn't include humans. Not that the story wouldn't include human emotion and feeling, but it wouldn't physically include human characters. I would love that, it could be almost complete creative freedom for the writers.

Not those.
I'll take a galactic war set a couple of centuries later where they can add space combat on par with Halo Reach's spectacular scenes. I think I want to see the future of this brilliant future, not a prequel.

I was thinking more along the lines as an explorable galaxy with you as a choose your race spectre recruit or maybe mercenary. Who knows?
