What do you all think the best starting specialbilities are?
I like it when they're spread out.
How high should I get trap skill to be able to successfuly use HLA spiked trap? I'm a Swashbuckler(9) dual to mage
Special abilities? Trap skill?

Spike traps are precious. Eventually get your Set Trap skill to 100% but only after you get Pick Pockets, Find Traps, and Hide In Shadows to 100%

1st thing is go to level 10 (+1 hit & armour)... the extra level will go fast & is worth the effort.
make that 11
I'd go at least 50% in set traps... the others depend on play style but by the end game, 100% in one skill is much better than 50% in two.
Hide & move/ shadow... I'd skip because you can just go invisible and you wont have the points for it by the time you want to dual... not like you can back-stab any way!
Detect traps & illusions... you need 100% to finish tob and these two skills are passive (they DON'T break invisible/ sanctuary) excellent for no-reload games where you have to keep your PC out of the action but you can fudge it with divine magic & potions.
Pick pocket... you need 150% so I'd let a bard cover this unless you really want it.
Edited!

All spread out means you are mediocre at everything, good at nothing. Figure out which ones to you to excel at first, get those points up, then fill in the rest.
How high you get set traps depends on how often you want your snares to fail - that skill is a %, so anything less than 100 will give you a failure chance when you try to set the trap.
As as swashbuckler dualed to a mage at level 9, you will never get the Thief HLAs - you have to have an active class when you level up over 3 million XP to get that class's HLA choices.

Sorry I missed the bit about spike traps. Ask yourself what you really want?
It’s all a trade but to clarify some points for you;
1) All single class thieves/ bards get 100% success rate on their ability traps (spike etc) without spending any points in set trap… note that they still CAN’T be set in sight of the enemy.
Since you are planning a swashbuckler I’ll assume you want to enter melee with him using two weapons…
Swashbuckler l10 – mage X will get 2 normal traps (assumes you spend some of your 270 points in set traps) & fast progression to high level spells but no spikes or UAI.
Consider the Bards blade kit for the same fast progression as the Swashbucker he gets pickpocket, two weapon fighting and spells… at L24 (3080000) he can UAI or set spike traps as well as having 115 in pickpocket basically trading the other thief abilities for the slow spell progression.
Of course you could take a mage thief multi but he will be the slowest thing since Minsc took his 3 grade finals.

A Delayed Blast Fireball makes an excellent trap, if the enemy is not a Fire Elemental.

Bah, forgot a Dual doesn't get the HLAs from the original class
sorry
Dante,
by starting special abilites I meant the 6 spells all characters get for being Bhaal spawn.

that's what I had been told, but I made a thief last night, consoled him up to 3.1 million right in opening dungeon, left set traps at 0%, took Spike Trap as HLA, and got the "snare failed" message when trying to set it. I even summoned an orc to try and see if it would trigger, but nothing.

Interesting… it seems there is a script that gives bards 100 points in set traps when making them but thieves are on their own.
