I am not in the game. I am aware of the writing. Even if I don't apply that knowledge to the way I play the game, my understanding of the writing still affects how much I enjoy the game.

But it doesn't. An option to flirt could be with any character. I mean, in real life you can flirt with well, anyone. Doesn't mean you know how it's gonna go after you make a move nor you know what is a person/character's sexuality or if he/she fancies you at all based solely on the fact it is possible for you to hit on someone. Hell, I suspect BW will throw in tons of flirting options (with Chakwas for example or even Legion for comdey relief) just to have you being turned down.

What I, the player, perceive affects how much I, the player, enjoy the game. It's a very simple concept that has nothing to do with metagaming. I can identify an inconsistency without being forced to play it out within my game.

Except that in BioWare's recent games choosing those dialog options is EXACTLY what makes those characters swing the other way.

Question: why when something is added to the game you like... say more customisable armour (it's just an example) are you happy then when something is added to the game that others like you respond with complaints of continuity or fan-service, retcons etc?

Normal suggestions:
Fix problems in previous game
Wrap up the plot
Bring back old favourites
do not change too much but add something new


Then there are "fanism" suggestions, suggestions that are only about what "you" guys want;
I WANT TO SEE TALI'S FACE BECAUSE I AM SELFISH. WHO CARES IF THE ONLY UNIQUE QUALITY ABOUT 
HER IS DESTROYED IN THE PROCESS. GIVE ME, GIVE ME!
I WANT JOKER ROMANCE BECAUSE I AM SELFISH. WHO CARES IF IT MAKES NO SENSE, DESTROYS
HIS CHARACTER AND BASICALLY BREAKS CANON. I WANT IT. GIVE ME, GIVE ME
I WANT ALL MY STRAIGHT CHARACTERS TO BECOME GAY SO I CAN ROMANCE THEM! WHO CARES IF

I am not in the game. I am aware of the writing. Even if I don't apply that knowledge to the way I play the game, my understanding of the writing still affects how much I enjoy the game.

Sounds silly to me,  but, I can't argue against it.  You also might just want to stop arguing as well,  no one is going to convince anyone of anything.  Most S/S supporters won't agree with you, unless they hate all the potential love interests so far...  it's human nature.  

I don't see a retcon,  as it seems like such a small thing.  Now, if Garrus suddenly started wearing pink, calling people girlfriend,  spoke with a lisp,  and gained a backstory about his father kicking him out for being gay I would cry retcon.

So, if you see the OPTION to flirt with Kaidan, it's going to ruin the game for you because that OPTION was never there before? It's somehow going to alter your perception of him and ruin his character forever?

The way I see it, the inability to flirt with Kaidan was never indicitive of anything except my inability to flirt with him. He never rejected manShep, never talked about how TOTALLY HETEROSEXUAL he was, an dif he had, then absolutely I'd be on your side claiming that it would be a "retcon" to make him "suddenly" bisexual. But he didn't.

But then there's the argument that he never flirted with manShep. But this was neve rindicative of anything, either! Jacob never flirts with femShep, not once. Does that mean that Jacob isn't straight? No. But if femShep flirts with him, Jacob will eventually enter a relationship with her. Does that make him straight? No! The only thing we learn from that information is that Jacob is interested in females--but this does not preclude his potential interest in males! We have no idea how Jacob would have responded to manShep's advances, and it's the same with Kaidan. He shows an interest in femShep if she is kind to him after Edem Prime, an opportunity manShep is denied, because manSheo, instead, is forced to interact with Ashley. We cannot know how Kaidan would have responded to manShep's interest, and manShep's inability to flirt with Kaidan should not be an indicator of Kaidan's sexuality, or anything more than a limitation of the game.

And who's to say they won't do that since they would be changing his character anyway? Although, the "guess what s/he's bi!" would be a hell of a lot less jarring than a complete change in personality, I wouldn't put it past them at this point. What with the utterly radical changes made to Isabela and Anders.

Ruin forever? No, not so much that. Draw my attention to the changes being made, yes. And that would be enough to make me like the game a little less. And more so and  more so with every similar addition of change to existing characters. And with a game like this where I'm already not even sure I'm going to want to buy it, it could certainly be that little bit that makes me say, "screw it, I'm keeping my money." With DAII it was the tactical camera not being there that pushed me to that point. Here it could be "guess what s/he's bi!"

If you're actually assuming they'll go that far you should probably take a deep breath. 

Also, waht Radical changes were made to isabella?  Outside of a physical redisgn  which everyone got.  Also the big hit to Anders isn't his bisexuality it is his lack of humor.  Come on though lets be truthful here,  Anders was just wizard Alistair with sexual experince.
