I'm new to this modding stuff and I was wondering if someone had a detailed and easy to understand explanation on how to install the NWN2 Character Editor on the NWN2 vault made by ScripterRon.

There's quite a lot in the ReadMe.txt file included in the ZIP, but unless you've got some weird custom install of NWN2 then chances are the first paragraph is the only one you have to worry about:

Installation:
-------------

To install this utility, extract all of the files from the zip file and place them in a directory of your choice. Then update the shortcut (NWN2Editor.lnk) and set the Start Directory to the directory where you stored the files.

[Once you've updated the link in the shortcut (NWN2Editor.lnk), then you should be able to use it to start the Character Editor]

I've come across something odd. It seems that i am able to use the editor without actually installing it. Will this cause it to mess something up? or did i somehow get lucky?

There's nothing to install. Just unzip it all into a folder, change the shortcut provided, and you're in business.

thats the thing. whenever I select a download, my pc gives me the option to save it or just open it. I selected open and it brought me to a screen showing the files, I clicked on the executable file and it opened up the editor. I didn't change the shortcut or anything else. I tested it by changing my deity on a save game and it seemed to work but it also changed the save game description in the load game menu to say i had no specific background and the alignment was neutral good like it should be but it showed the symbol for lawful good. I loaded the save and i opened the character menu and it showed the deity was changed but it seems it had kept my natural leader background and the alignment symbol was correct. I made a new save and it seemed corrected the save game description. Does the editor usually do this?

I am so lost I don't even know what to ask for.

To install this utility, extract all of the files from the zip file and place them in a directory of your choice. Then update the shortcut (NWN2Editor.lnk) and set the Start Directory to the directory where you stored the files.

This makes no sense to me.

I contacted the author of the editor, and he was kind enough to send me a quick reply that helped me to get it working.

For future reference, there is a shortcut that's packaged in the zip file along with the editor. To change the installation directory, right-click on the shortcut and go to Properties. The "Target" field is where you want to add the parameters for the installation directory. This is what my Target field looks like after making the change:

C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m -DNWN2.install.path="E:\\Games\\Steam\\steamapps\\commo n\\neverwinter nights 2" -jar NWN2Editor.jar

Just an FYI for those who are interested!

Asked for a more detailed explanation.

1. Unzip the NWN2editor. (Unzip is winRAR with a different name.)
2. Open folder that you unziped into and there will be four items.
3. Under the column "Type" one will be listed as a shortcut. It is called "NWN2 Character Editor" and is 1KB in size.
4. Right click on that and at the bottom of the popup choose properties.
5. Under the "Short cut" Tab there will be a Target window with a long string of confusing stuff.
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m -jar NWN2Editor.jar
What you are trying to do is change this line so it tells the program where to look on your computer for the game.
If you installed the game into a 'game' folder it would be: C:\\Games\\Neverwinter Nights 2
Or it could be:C:\\programe files\\Neverwinter Nights 2
6. Find where you installed the game write it down and go back to step 5.
in the line below I have put .................... that is where to insert what you wrote down
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m........................ -jar NWN2Editor.jar
Now type what you wrote down in between inverted comers "........"
It should look like">C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m -"NWN2.install.path="C:\\games\\DnDNWNC\\Neverwinter Nights II" -jar NWN2Editor.jar
Check with the above post for help.
Then click apply and close.

Hope it helps.

And I had no trouble following the ReadMe file that came with the utility. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks, I suppose.

Ok it might be something minor, but it's still not working. Here is my path to NWN2

C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights II
And thats how you get to NWN2.
So this is the full look of the path I put in the Editor Shortcut
C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m-"NWN2.install.path="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights II"-jar NWN2Editor.ja

So when I hit Apply this is what pops up
"Problem with Shortcut"
"The name 'C:\\windows\\system32\\javaw.exe' specified in the Target Box
is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct."

I just did a quick search for it on my machine here at work (64-bit Windows 7), and javaw.exe was in the following locations:

c:\\Windows\\SysWOW64\\
c:\\Program Files (x86)\\Java\\jre6\\bin

There were also copies of it in several specific application folders.

Copy and paste this into the shortcut box.

C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m -DNWN2.install.path="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights II" -jar NWN2Editor.jar

If it does not work, open the readme file and go space by space through the whole example sentence looking for a mismatch. Eg a space where one should not be or missing a " somewhere.

After that check that your Java is installed correctly. I can't help you with that as it worked first time for me and I did not need to understand it.

Persevere mate!

I can actually launch this with my launcher program. I have the install path via the registry ( and other means ). Actually i did code that creates shortcuts ( at least on XP ). The "C:\\Program Files (x86)" part can vary depending on OS, and the Atari folder, well it might be in steam or some other location. My folder name for the app is "Neverwinter Nights 2" not "Neverwinter Nights II" as well, it really depends on language, OS and where you got the game from. )

If someone can go registry diving and see if it has the path for java stored there, that would help me implement this, that is about the only part i just don't know.

I thought I'd chime in, since I had a hard time getting this to work as well. It's mentioned that javaw.exe may exist in a different folder, so my path ended up looking like this:

C:\\WINDOWS\\SysWOW64\\javaw.exe -Xmx256m -DNWN2.install.path="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Neverwinter Nights 2" -jar NWN2Editor.jar

Hope this helps!

Weirdly, this works with no modifications on my laptop and not on my desktop. I recently purchased the GOG version because it features the Mysteries of Westgate expansion. Anyone know if the NWN 2 Complete version is the problem, or if it's just the path?

<adding his own...>

If you're using Java 7.17 and you're on Win 8 (don't know about others), javaw.exe may not be in your WOW directory. Search for it and add a path.

I am having some issues getting this editor to work with Windows 8 64bit OS. Java is Java 7 Update 25.

My NWN2 install path is: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights 2 Complete

My java install path is: C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Java

I cannot get this application to work even after setting the target to:

C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64\\javaw.exe -DNWN2.install.path="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights 2 Complete" -jar NWN2Editor.jar

Javaw.exe IS in my WOW directory.

Any ideas where I'm going wrong here?

I had to repair my PATH for the GOG version - following the above got the Editor to work - with the adjusted PATH

:wizard:

regarding my earlier post - I was installing from disks and the actual .jar file started the editor - now I have to use the shortcut
:innocent:

the PATH is case and space sensitive
:police:

this is in win7x86

Just to add to what is already there, for those with 64 bit OS try replacing:
C:\\Windows\\System32\\javaw.exe with
C:\\Windows\\sysWOW64\\javaw.exe

or otherwise search your windows folder for javaw.exe and adjust accordingly

Mind sharing what your exact path was? I still can't get this to work and I've set it up to the best of my ability. In theory it should be good to go but it can't find the install directory.

You'd think you wouldn't have to go through such crap just to use one program, aye?
