So I thought about something that's kind of dumb, but isn't actually a plothole. Why do the reapers send signals to the keepers instead of directly to the citadel? Why the need for a middle man? Imagine this. You want to detonate a bomb by remote. Which would you rather do? Detonate the bomb by pressing a button, or; detonate the bomb by pressing a button which in turn activates a robot to walk over to the bomb to detonate it.  A prothean could just screw with the robot's signal receiving device and thus make it impossible to remote activate the bom..... oh, wait.....that did happen <_<.

And that brings me to my next point. Why did soveirgn have to take manual control of the citadel by clutching the presidium tower? Why couldn't soveirgn take control of the citadel five hundred billion miles away in a safe area? All he needed to do was tell Saren to jump through the conduit with his krogan/geth army and overide the keeper system that was in place while he continually sent the overide signal until he had direct control. It seems that if a reaper can send a signal to a collection of keepers from any point in the galaxy, then a reaper could take remote control of the citadel itself from any point in the galaxy once it has the ability.

I understand the need for keepers. They are pretty much galactic custodians. They take care of the citadel while the reapers take 50,000 year naps. That aspect is very cool and logical to me. The keepers can reproduce, obey, escape unwanted attention from c-sec, etc. I just don't understand why the reapers need the keepers once they are awake and want direct control.

If someone could help me out with this logical dilemma I would greatly appreciate it. Mass Effect is awesome and this relationship between the reapers and the keepers is bugging me.

Vigil gives you a virus/codehack that will allow Shep to regain control of Citadel functions. Any new race that finds the Citadel would have its best tech/computer gurus going over it, and possibly find any coding that would allow the Reapers to take control once they sent a certain signal. Thus, they code it into a being that they could "ASSUME DIRECT CONTROL" of and get them to manually open the Citadel to them, much the same way Saren did.
Unfortunately, this didn't stop the Protheans from learning how to tinker with said coding in the Keepers and changing it. Admittedly, it was too late to help the Protheans, but it was a final act of defiance from a doomed species, designed to help future races.

I see what upsets you. If I remeber, I think it was Vigil. Well, somebody told that the keepers somehow evolved (they are organics afterall) to react trough the citadel, that was the reason for the reapers to divert the signal to the citadel instead of the keepers.

i actually just finished up a PT of ME1, and went thru the extensive dialogue with vigil (staying longer to ask all possible questions). i was surprised the ammount of information that thing had, that i never even knew about.

for example it mentioned how when repears invade a gallactic civlization, they typically leave one of their own behind, for their inevitible return on the next cycle. soveriegn was left to oversee the situation, and determine when was the right time to strike (open relay, and bring in his buddies).

vigil explained that the remaining protheans (scientists) worked on the keepers, and found them to be the key in opening the relay. when the reapers attack, a signal is sent thru the citadel, trigerring the keepers to open up the relay. however, the scientists found this out and fixed the problem. this time when the reapers sent their message, the keepers ignored it, and they were stuck in darkspace.

vigil explained that soveriegn was now alone, and had to investigate the situation. he explained that repears are patient, and will not jump into a situation without careful planning. sovereign knew that revealing its true form would unite all organics against him, even a reaper cannot survive those odds. soveriegn then slowly planned its attack, indoctrinating easily subdued species.

but the whole thing with keepers was that they were (supposedly) the first race that the reapers conquered and enslaved. they seeminly responded the best to indoctrination, and eventually evolved over time to suite the reapers needs. i really wish that the council could of seen vigil, because the events of ME2 would of went much differently, lol.

The Keepers are a failsafe incase the Citadel is compromised. Pretty simple logic by the Reapers actually.

Not exactly. They are exact copies of each other, clones created in the inaccesible core of the Citadel itself. They are synthetic constructs unlike the Geth's.

I'd say it's exactly the same thing in terms of story.

Version with keepers: the prothean team went to the citadel through the conduit and fixed the keepers so the reaper signal doesn't work anymore.

Keeper-free version: the prothean team went to the citadel through the conduit and fixed the citadel's main control framework yadda yadda so the reaper signal doesn't work anymore.

I prefer the version with keepers though. They're a hint that the council government might be more fragile than they would want to admit. You go to the citadel, the center of galactic power, and there are those little fellows you're not allowed to touch because nobody really knows what they're all about, so everyone just ignores them, pretending everything's okay, but it isn't. That's the impression I got when I went to the citadel the first time.
