Honestly, it's just as Cutlass Jack said.  I got attached to Tali primarily because she could open crates and her tech skills were a lot easier to open up than Garrus'.  Some people have said she was terrible in combat, but I never saw that.  That's probably due to her upgraded shielding.  As a result I ended up taking her pretty much everywhere with me. 

Then there's her maturity which I valued but feel was lost (at least somewhat) in the sequel.  There was no posturing and she strayed from embodying the princess angle that seemed to hang there.  Comming off NWN2 I really didn't want to experience that again seeing as I was forced to romance a druid princess in the aforementioned NWN2.

Meh.  Garrus is awesome (good in combat, has some funny ambient dialogue here and there), but Tali tends to park it in the engine room for the entire game.  There are so many better squadmates to take along in terms of combat.  Plus the fact that she deeply annoys me as a character.

From my point of view as how i see it, Garrus is a real bad-ass in Mass Effect I he was quite the police cop looking up to shepard.
In Mass Effect II he was quite the Renegade with the whole revenge thing going on and i so like that in characters.
Tali i don't like she's more meh don't see what's so special about her Liara was ok in Mass Effect II there was not really any females i actually liked.
My favorites in the whole mass effect universe till now would be:

1. Wrex
2. Garrus
3. Shepard

OP nailed it, but I also tend to go for exotic characters in fiction anyway. I don't like characters that I'm likely to find in real life. In stories, I want to experience stuff that I would not be able to experience in real life.

Romancing an alien, particularly an alien with Tali's biology, is pretty unlikely, thus, it appeals to me.

Yes, I'm a little...odd. My gf reminds me of this every day.

They've been with Shepard since the beginning, they've always had his back and they're both genuinely well written characters and well designed aliens - and when Garrus and Tali do talk to one another they play well off of the other's personality not to mention their chemistry with Shepard.

Agreed. If you set her up right she can be an extremely useful support character.

Don't let others change you view on the characters. Hell if you start letting trolls and fans affect your outlook you won't have any characters to like!

Completely agree.  I  like certain characters for certain reasons.  

I think the writers have written very well alien characters period.  It may have to do with the fact we knew nothing about any of these species before we played ME for the first time.  Over the course of two games, Garrus and Tali have grown as characters.  Along with Liara.  For me personally, Liara and Tali have been the best written characters so far with Mordin and Garrus a close second.

Just look at Wrex. people say he's such a badass, but all he does in ME1 is tell you stories. The most badass thing Wrex does in ME1 is shoot Fist after he's disarmed and surrendered

I don't see Tali's personality, to me she's just a walking encyclopedia on the Quarians and I think she's very selfish, racist, and immature. Tali also hero-worships you and people like being hero-worshipped

Garrus is more whinier than Kaidan, but most people think Kaidan is whiny in ME1 while Garrus gets no flak for it. I Ithink people liked him in ME1 because he idolizes you .and values your opinion

Personally I don't see the appeal but I guess Bioware made more characters for a reason

Yeah, Kaidan gets thrashed for being "dull" but he had better characterization than Garrus and Tali(especially the latter) in ME1.

Because Tali and Garrus are a great combo to bring with you on missions. Awesome characters also.

I have shepard's who aren't friend swith them and barely even talked to them in both games, and even if Shepard is friends with them, they still have Liara, Wrex, Kaidan/Ashley, Joker, Dr. chakwas and all of the normandy's crew. It's not like it's shepard, Garrus, and Tali vs the world.
