Invader, you think people are shallow for liking a character you dislike just because she's well endowned? And you think said endownment was the only reason why people like her?

You are the shallow one here. And you're a pretty big hypocrite too.

Please read my posts fully next time.

Wow, look at that - I can be unfair as well.

InvaderErl wrote...

Wait!

Are you saying that the generalizations bouncing around these forums does not actually befit the attitude of people who may actually like the Miranda character because they find her appealing.

Wow, Imagine THAT.

So to summarize, I like Miranda a lot. I think she's great as my Shepard's XO, romantic interest or not. So no, I think you may have leapt before you looked there. I most certainly don't think people who like Miranda as their LI are shallow.

Note that Tali & Garrus were indeed "fanserviced" from ME1 to ME2. People loved their characters, and felt there could be so much more done with them; And it seems Tali was originally romanceable, until some moron at Bioware said "Derp, who'd want to romance someone with CHICKEN FEET?!"

The character was allowed to get to know both of them better in Mass Effect 2, see their issues and flaws, and get much more personal with them. Even without being romanced, they're very old-friendy during the game, and it makes sense; They're the only two to return to Shepard's side. They should be expanded upon.

There was huge demand, and huge satisfaction and happiness. If Bioware had, say, made Wrex and the Consort romanceable characters instead(Not saying anything against either of them, Wrex is the Wrexyest Krogan around, and the Consort is nice enough), there would have been a lot more complaining. Bioware listened to their fans, produced a quality game with key fan requests attended to, and ME2 turned out to be one of the greatest games of all time, for many, many people.

Fanservice can, and usually is, good. Where you say you hate Miranda's @ss scenes; Did we step into your thread and pick at bits of her? Why did you come in just to put sick-smilies next to Tali's name and call her a leg-humper, if you already find so many flaws with your unpicked on favourite character?

@DoNotIngest

Thanks for the response, I've seen #mancer being used in a contemptuous manner, but I just assumed that was because they didn't respect anyone who romanced the character.

On topic -

Garrus and Tali are easy to like. Their flaws are not so pronounced (or at least more bearable) than those of other companions.  They're also pretty affable, and have been around as team members for both games.

I did read your posts fully, and the language and tonality you use in them come off as a PO'd fanboy trolling. I may be reading too much into it given that I tend to over-analyse sentences due to me pursuing a second diploma in English, but it definitely seems like it. That's why I always say: Use your words carefully. Pick before you speak. You seriously sound like you're saying that it's shallow to like Miranda and that she's nothing more than fanservice.

Your pic posting sure as hell ain't helping either.

Okay, the internet is being a serious butthole today and the thread refused to load properly, so I only read the title. Pardon me if I am addressing the wrong issues here.

Anyway, cynical reasons: They are sexable, are cool aliens, have Dat Voice and Dem Hips, and hero-worship Shepard.

My personal reasons: They're your goddamn best friends. Seriously. They're there for you when you need them, shoot the sh*t with you about the trouble you got into back in the good old days, and trust you more than anyone else in the galaxy. Like Liara, another extremely popular character, they genuinely care about you.

Also, when you first meet them in ME1, they really emit this feeling of being "just kids," or rather very young individuals who haven't figured out who they are just yet (again, like Liara). In ME2, you see them grow up, and in facing the darker parts of the galaxy and themselves, they lose a bit of that youthful spirit and come out broken and jaded, allowing their flaws to run rampant, requiring the intervention of an old friend to remind them they aren't alone.

Finally, they seem a lot like people the player might actually know: the shy nerdy girl with a surprising fiery streak and very deeply held beliefs and family ties who hasn't quite found true strength in herself even though it's waiting to be discovered; the smartass best friend who repeatedly goes looking for trouble and covers up his own misery with a smile and a joke about that one time when you both got caught drinking underage or something... Really, despite being "cool aliens," they're incredibly human. That's something that can be said of the majority of the Mass Effect cast, and it's the reason every single squadmate has a devoted fanbase, even Jacob.

Yes, they have very irritating and crippling flaws that make me want to beat the hell out of both of them, but I'm willing to endure them because Bioware's tricked me into honestly caring.

But seriously, don't talk to me about the fanbases--there's questionable fanart of pretty much everybody out there. I have seen parts of Wrex that cannot be unseen all because I forgot to check "safe search."

Goddamn dial-up.

PS: It is my personal opinion that no ME squaddie so far has been "shallow" or "just fanservice," including Miranda (most fanservicey) and Grunt (often accused of being shallow).  This is not because I am a blind Bioware fangirl, but because I thrive on character analysis regardless of whether or not I'm any good at it.

PPS: I am due for a midnight snack.  I'm thinking... Pop Tarts.

Exactly, lines of dialogue can be opened without starting off with slinging hypocrite into a thread already on its 5th page.

Agree 120% with last sentence, not so much with the rest. Tali was rather one-dimensional in ME2 (not much difference there with ME1) as it was still geth, geth and idol worshipping Shep. Garrus at the very least had some believable flaws that BW did pretty good. Tali? Not so much...Saying that Tali wasn't as fanservicey as Miranda is a blatant lie. Sure, Miranda had fanservice not many liked (I personally hated the a*s shots myself, it was cheap as hell), but Tali had even more fanservice that everyone liked because they asked for it.

Seriously, you Tali fanboys need to stop blowing the hell up over a minor phrasing issue.

God why am i still saying this.

From my experience, during the mission of the rogue VI in the first game, I was thinking of possible teammates to help me and chose Tali and Garrus.
During previous playthroughs I had always been eliminated by the rocket drones of the last base. I even used different companions for each of those Shepards.
The thing is I chose Tali for her tech abilities and Garrus for sniping. My Shepard that time was a Sentinel. When I defeated all enemies in the three bases without dying I was really impressed.

Since then I carry them everywhere and my enemies fall.

Plus they are good characters. Garrus with his problems regarding C-Sec regulations or doc Saleon and how Shepard can help him is really cool.
Tali always was the most interesting to me from the squad. She´s young but eager to learn and has a sweet personality. She´s my one LI.
Both have good voice actors too.

Alongside Joker and Dr Chakwas, Tali and Garrus are also good friends of Shepard, fighting with him/her to protect the galaxy no matter the odds.
That´s all I can contribute right now.

Miranda and the asari are the most blatantly fanservicey thing in Mass Effect. Sure, fans asked for and got romances and added roles for Garrus and Tali, but it wasn't horrible. It didn't ruin the game, nor did it detract from my gaming experiance.

Now say, if Tali or Garrus' asses were shoved in my face*, or they constantly hit on me even when I didn't want it*. Then that would be horrible fanservice. As it is forced on when I did not want it.

*Miranda
*Consort, Shiala, Liara, practically every major named asari ever

+1

You don't see me making "Why is Liara so popular( pre-LotSB)" threads.

THE ENTIRE FREAKING GAME IS FANSERVICE! WHY? Now that I have you attention: We all enjoy playing the game, otherwise we wouldn't have kept it after we bought it. Most of us enjoy all the characters in the game. Some idiots go 'Derp, racist, bland, fanservicy' etc, but their opinions really don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

My point is that everything Bioware does with the game is done to make it more interesting so that the fans will enjoy it. Thus, it is all fanservice.

Well Tali and Garrus are all around likable characters. Where as characters like Miranda only have their blatant sex appeal fan service. It seems obvious.

Nothing as far as Tali or Miranda is concerned.

I have issue with somebody entering the thread calling me a hypocrite and shallow and then getting upset when I call them on it and then the person saying it was my fault when its clear they jumped into a situation they had read maybe the last page on and decided to start hurling insults.
