Okay, the internet is being a serious butthole today and the thread refused to load properly, so I only read the title. Pardon me if I am addressing the wrong issues here.
Anyway, cynical reasons: They are sexable, are cool aliens, have Dat Voice and Dem Hips, and hero-worship Shepard.
My personal reasons: They're your goddamn best friends. Seriously. They're there for you when you need them, shoot the sh*t with you about the trouble you got into back in the good old days, and trust you more than anyone else in the galaxy. Like Liara, another extremely popular character, they genuinely care about you.
Also, when you first meet them in ME1, they really emit this feeling of being "just kids," or rather very young individuals who haven't figured out who they are just yet (again, like Liara). In ME2, you see them grow up, and in facing the darker parts of the galaxy and themselves, they lose a bit of that youthful spirit and come out broken and jaded, allowing their flaws to run rampant, requiring the intervention of an old friend to remind them they aren't alone.
Finally, they seem a lot like people the player might actually know: the shy nerdy girl with a surprising fiery streak and very deeply held beliefs and family ties who hasn't quite found true strength in herself even though it's waiting to be discovered; the smartass best friend who repeatedly goes looking for trouble and covers up his own misery with a smile and a joke about that one time when you both got caught drinking underage or something... Really, despite being "cool aliens," they're incredibly human. That's something that can be said of the majority of the Mass Effect cast, and it's the reason every single squadmate has a devoted fanbase, even Jacob.
Yes, they have very irritating and crippling flaws that make me want to beat the hell out of both of them, but I'm willing to endure them because Bioware's tricked me into honestly caring.
But seriously, don't talk to me about the fanbases--there's questionable fanart of pretty much everybody out there. I have seen parts of Wrex that cannot be unseen all because I forgot to check "safe search."
Goddamn dial-up.
PS: It is my personal opinion that no ME squaddie so far has been "shallow" or "just fanservice," including Miranda (most fanservicey) and Grunt (often accused of being shallow). This is not because I am a blind Bioware fangirl, but because I thrive on character analysis regardless of whether or not I'm any good at it.
PPS: I am due for a midnight snack. I'm thinking... Pop Tarts.
