I'd say it has little to do with mystery sex appeal. There are tons of characters with romance/sex appeal. The big difference in my mind is that the characters have been written in a way that even if there is no romance both gender of players likes the characters as a friend and or companion and their behaviour can be that of a romance for those who like it or just a good buddy. This is not that common.

Looking at other games and characters in BioWare games, a good number of the female romance options have been characters I disliked as a male player. (Anomen, Zuvran, Anders) and I'm sure the same can be said for male romances.

The writing for Garrus is particulalry good in his buddy banter with Shephard.

When I get married to Miranda Garrus is going to be my best man (Turian?). Tali annoys me though. She's a middle eastern whiny teenager in my eyes (and ears). I'm a whiny teen too, but sheesh, she never seems to stop!

EDIT: Hmm, maybe some slight bashing here. Just trying to make a point, sorry if I offend.

Well everybody makes mistakes at some point. Those mistakes there are quite a bit bigger than alot of others but in my humble interpretation that it something those characters will have to live with the rest of their lives. It's not my perogative to punish them further.

Kinda like if you knew a person that eg. killed another person through drunk driving. Would YOU punish/judge that person on that action/mistake alone?

Garrus and Tali were my main team in ME1. So it carried over in ME2, and now it will caring over in ME3. I just always loved both characters, and now they just fell like old friends to my Shep.

it is probable but I doubt it will be as much as an evolution as Garrus did from ME2 to ME3 because of her armour not being damaged to such an extent.

On the point on why the characters are so popular is pretty much a combination of being romance characters, from both mass effects and with garrus being a fun character and Tali being so mysterious.

Why they are disliked on a fan point of view is that they do seem to dominate everyone else's opinions on character matters when in reality not the vast majority want such changes. The character evolution does feel un natural at times considering from friend to romance is not smooth in any shape or form.

The other problem (in tali's case) is that she is a very much love it or hate it kind of character (me personally I found her interesting in ME1 but not in ME2).

The theory you have with romances effecting popularity is spot on when I did a survey of the most popular characters in the ME series there was a relationship between them (expect for Jacob and Morinth)

It deserves either a Woohammer™* or a Chris Priestly LOCKDOWN™*. Pages and pages of picture spam and pointless name-calling? Yeah, that's a sure sign that a thread has run its course. I actually took the time to write a post that treated the subject as a legitimate question, and that was ignored in favor of Tali-bashing and Garrus-bashing, and one-upmanship. So it's clear that this isn't really a discussion at this point, no matter how "funny" people might think it is.
