Will we see other military branches?

I would like to see how the other parts of our military work now in this new advanced age, and how they can be implemented into the game. Thoughts on this matter anyone?

Otherwise every nation on earth maintains its own individual military, as the Alliance is its own governing entity independent from earth.

why doesn't the air force control the space ships? that's the way it is in real life so I can never figure out why Sci fi always has the navy in space.
I always liked the metaphor of space as a body of water, a la "Firefly", among others.
Besides, ships in ME have more direct counterparts in naval vessels than planes. There's no giant plane that can launch fighters (as far as I know), but aircraft carriers can. Like the Dreadnoughts that can launch smaller fighters in the ME universe.

Many space-opera's have gone with the notion of a Space Navy. Probably because Navies are tradationally the "exploration" units.
*edit for idiocy

Not too far off I'd say. Because of gravity... these space vessels can even be sunk.

^This. I've always thought that navy makes more sense for space combat especially with ships of a large size as the battles are more battles of attrition than dog fights which Navies have far more experience with and training for.johnny jump up wrote...

I think that once humanity need to have a military in space the current disiplines will combine into one anyway

I agree, Space is more analogous to the oceans than air to me.

*also, most air force pilots are officially astronauts now. they don't have breathable atmosphere where they're flying.

That is however still considered to be our atmosphere, all the way up to 80-125 km, depending on which authorities you talk to.
The SR71 still has a classified absolute ceiling, rumored to be ~100,000 ft (30.5 km),
and the maximum altitude ever achieved be a plane was in the 70s, where a MIG25 hit 125,000 ft (38 km) in a ballistic flight, if memory serves me right. That's still only halfway into actual space.
But I sure wouldn't open the cockpit at that altitude

the SR71-Blackbird might actually be considered a space shuttle by some definitions, I'm not precisely sure how high it can go (my dad wouldn't tell me and he helped design it).
Your dad was an engineer for the SR-71? That's cool as $#%7!
Anyways, let's stay on topic cause the Aurora project in particular legitimately scares me

EDIT: By the way, did you know the SR-71 was actually the RS-71? Nixon got it wrong in his speech and they changed it.

No pressure.
