In the Mass Effect universe the main service we've seen is the navy and the marines, with it being space oriented and all, but now that we're taking hits at our home planet groundside, will we see branches like the army?airforce(not some kind of space ship)? what about the actual navy, warships, actually in the sea? It would be nice to see how far the sea oriented navy has come considering the new advanced technology we have, including mass effect fields. The army must have been called for the reapers ground invasion to fight husks or geth or whatever.

I would like to see how the other parts of our military work now in this new advanced age, and how they can be implemented into the game. Thoughts on this matter anyone?

We do see fighters flying around with gunships to fight Occuli in the attack on Earth. They may be Air Force. Thought I suppose we won't know until the release.

All military branches lead into the Alliance "Navy." As without space superiority you are pretty much boned.

Otherwise every nation on earth maintains its own individual military, as the Alliance is its own governing entity independent from earth.

Army was merged into Marines and Air Force was merged into Navy. Why can't people understand this?

why doesn't the air force control the space ships? that's the way it is in real life so I can never figure out why Sci fi always has the navy in space.

I always liked the metaphor of space as a body of water, a la "Firefly", among others.

Besides, ships in ME have more direct counterparts in naval vessels than planes.  There's no giant plane that can launch fighters (as far as I know), but aircraft carriers can.  Like the Dreadnoughts that can launch smaller fighters in the ME universe.

Not too far off I'd say.    Because of gravity... these space vessels can even be sunk.
Many space-opera's have gone with the notion of a Space Navy.    Probably because Navies are tradationally the "exploration" units.

*edit for idiocy

Stargate tried the whole Space Army/Marines thing and even Starship Troopers I believe. I've always been more partial to the Navy though.

^This. I've always thought that navy makes more sense for space combat especially with ships of a large size as the battles are more battles of attrition than dog fights which Navies have far more experience with and training for.

I think that once humanity need to have a military in space the current disiplines will combine into one anyway

Bioware made the same mistake all sci fi game developers have made. Putting the Navy in charge of Space Warfare. The Air Force controls all things flight or space related. Stargate gets it right.

There's no air in space, just sayin' :P

I agree, Space is more analogous to the oceans than air to me.

naval combat is fought in two dimensions, unless it's subsurface or dealing with attacking planes. Air force combat always deals with fighting in all dimensions where you have to content with threats, above, below and around you.
*also, most air force pilots are officially astronauts now. they don't have breathable atmosphere where they're flying.

That is however still considered to be our atmosphere, all the way up to 80-125 km, depending on which authorities you talk to.

The SR71 still has a classified absolute ceiling, rumored to be ~100,000 ft (30.5 km),
and the maximum altitude ever achieved be a plane was in the 70s, where a MIG25 hit 125,000 ft (38 km) in a ballistic flight, if memory serves me right. That's still only halfway into actual space.

But I sure wouldn't open the cockpit at that altitude

the SR71-Blackbird might actually be considered a space shuttle by some definitions, I'm not precisely sure how high it can go (my dad wouldn't tell me and he helped design it). I do know however that there are some fighters in development that are designed for space combat or use space as the medium to get from point A to B, the Aurora and Scramjet respectively. these are from other sources though so they might not be accurate.

Your dad was an engineer for the SR-71? That's cool as $#%7!
Anyways, let's stay on topic cause the Aurora project in particular legitimately scares me :?

why does it scare you? and he said the work was a blast but being a government contractor for defense sucked.

It's just strange to me that a plane designed during the 80s (like the F-117) never saw public daylight and every time I find some info on it, it seems that it is still under development. Like you said, i'm almost convinced it will be closer to a spaceship than a plane if it ever goes public.

not really that strange. I think the Stratofortress (not sure if I got that right) was in use from Korea to Vietnam and was most likely designed and developed over the preceding decade.

Yes, we will. They will be dying right next to us.

EDIT: By the way, did you know the SR-71 was actually the RS-71? Nixon got it wrong in his speech and they changed it.:D

With Earth lost right at the beginning any other various Earth services are irrelevant now.

It's all up to Shepard now.

No pressure.
