For example, Shepard has to split the squad, wherein half go to one world to do something and the other goes to another world to something else (similar to the Virmire infiltration split). Shepard would have to choose to accompany one group over the other. Eventually, 'everyone' comes back together, but there would be several hours worth of gameplay that would be hidden depending on your choice.
To me, this would be great since I anticipate multiple gameplays. From a financial sense, does it make any sense? Yes, true, us diehards would love it, but from a business sense, why would BW/EA force several hours worth of gameplay to be hidden, expecially in light of the need to appeal to the general audience. In contrast, such an alternative story arc would receive rave reviews from gamers and thus, could boost sales. Hmmmm... What say you?
Would it make $ sense to make two, simultaneous mini-story arcs?

So, almost like what Awakening did where you could choose to defend your keep or go purge Amaranthine?

I dunno. It doesn't sound too unappealing (I reckon BW could pull it off nicely) but the game's length would get sheared in half. Probably not worth it.

I think if they have the resources for this they should use it to make a branching narrative based on previous game decisions, rather than redundant gameplay sections.

You definately do not speak for me when you say "us diehards". I'm a diehard Bioware gamer, but I dont think this would be a good idea.

It's happened before. It isn't a bad idea but there's really not much else to say about it.

I'm just suggesting a choice to be made that takes you to either World A or World B and that would last a few hours (not the whole game). Imagine if you could lead the infiltration team of your choosing on Virmire, as opposed to Kaiden/Ash. Wouldn't you want to play ME a second time just to lead the other team?

If it were going to be several hours I think it should be a side campaign. Bioware wants to do co-op it seems. So why not have another side of the story told through co-op?

So you want two story arcs half as long? I'm not sure most people would prefer that.

Wait, what? When did Bioware say they want to unleash this product destroying horror on us?
