Why Liara? Several reasons:
1. She is a character constructed to be easy to voice/ write - her role has her in love with Shep, if she was a member of other race it would either force the designers to make 2 interchangeable characters of different genders, or force a same sex romantic content on the player. Not a good idea even if you are not required to respond.

...

Because fem!Shep and Liara isn't....

I...

... what?

1. No one person lead Shepard to the Conduit it was a long series of events.
2. Again more of a group effort and Miranda built Shepard so that tends to be more important.
3. There is no canon love interest. There is no canon anything that can be decided on in the game don't say clearly silly things.
4. Shepard did most of the work. Also the SB won't be important because 90% chance she's not going to be the SB in ME3.
5, Once again there is no Canon anything stop making that claim. (Also Tali or Garrus would be closer to being a 'BFF/Confidant anyway)

She is not a big deal. She is not special.

1. No Liara, no Ilos.
2. Miranda did a job. Liara risked her neck out of love. Liara wins.
3. Deny it all you want. Liara romance spans all 3 games. She is the best romance. The canon love.
4. The fact that she got her own DLC makes her better than everyone else. Deal with it.
5. Did you invite her to the Normandy? Liara is your BFF. Garrus is your canon brofriend and Tali is your #1 fan.

She is so a big deal. Liara is Bioware's favorite which makes her special. You might as well just deal with it. Resistance is futile.

I can recall many times that Bioware has said it themselves there is no canon Shepard therefore there is no canon romance

Replace Liara with hanar/elcor/volus graphics. She's not an S/S LI for femSheps. She's an alien (or bestiality if you want to really put it out there) LI for all Sheps. Too bad all asari look like blue medusas, it really confuses the galaxy.

I never sad it wasn't a somewhat cheap cope out - yet we are told that she is not infarct female, but an alien from a mono gendered races, so technically if you close your eyes and think really hard you can persuade yourself it's not a same sex romance :D We can even have children with her regardless of gender. So no, it's not ideal and the story is still massively orientated towards maleShep, but some shaky attempt to to obviously make femShep a lesbian regardless of players wishes where made :)

Oh you,  that's absolutely not true.  I might have been inclined to agree if Femme Shepard stopped going into heat around Jacob and Thane, I can safely say that the hetero options were over emphasized over the ******.

What do they have to do with Liara? I'm all for same sex romances btw. but you have to remember that ME1 & 2 don't actually have them, as last not formally acknowledged once. Liara while very much female looking it not a same sex romance if you listen to the devs :)

Must this be brought up every time Liara is referred to?

From the wiki:

There is some conflicting information regarding the gender of the asari. Though they resemble females, at least to humans, asari are non-gender specific, with no concept of gender differences. Liara says her species is "mono-gendered—male and female have no real meaning for us," and, if asked, says that she is "not precisely a woman". However, in the Codex it is stated that the asari are an all-female race. The Galactic Codex: Essentials Edition 2183 says that "while asari have only one gender, they are not asexual like single-celled life—all asari are sexually female", and according to Liara they also have maternal instincts. They are innately different from humans for asari can mate with other species.

Gender != Sex. Gender is a social construct which outline expected behavior based on one's sex. In an all-sexually-female race, such as the asari (and they are sexually female, given that they are the bearers of the children), there would have no need for gender definitions.

You're free to play however you want, just know that Liara is the correct love interest.

Look at your reaction to the fact that Bioware has clearly displayed favoritism toward Liara. Of course they tell you there is no canon. They don't want to deal with your whinning so they tell you what you want to hear to shut you up. But if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...guess what?  It's a duck. Deal with it.

They might as well make her killable in ME3, if they decide they want to have her back for a future game they can just do a Leliana. Of course people will complain about that, but I won't because she won't be dead in my game.

God no! Pulling a Leliana is worse than an immortal character. At least your choice isn't rectoned in the latter option.

Unless it is like a Morrigan, where the supposed "death" is left a mystery and uncertain.

Unlike the Anders and Leliana treatment. Where your choice don't matter.

Also I hope Liara dosen't get force pregnant like Morrigan who can have a old god boy regardless of your choice to not do the ritual. Makes you wonder how she got pregnant without a man....

Everyone should make one playthrough as a xenophobic femShep with a Colonist/Sole Survivor background who romanced Kaidan.

- You have the forced friendship with Liara
- You have to flirt with Jacob
- You will always look sad, blowing up 300 000 Batarians
- You have to work with Cerberus
- Horizon <-

If you RP it right, it will be the worst ME experience ever. Enjoy.

This makes me sad on so many levels. :crying:

Added a bit to the Cerberus one. Seriously, Bioware, you couldn't even have thrown Sole Survivor Sheps a bone on that one?

I agree there.  Shep never mentions it or any of the crap Cerberus did in ME1.

You can talk to Miranda about some of the ME1 missions relating to Cerberus. She makes excuses for the Creepers, Rachni and Jack. I wanted to talk about Kahoku but there was there was no option to.

Just gonna throw my two cents in. I've been a Liara fan since ME1. I just really liked her personality. When she showed up in ME2, I had a bit of personality whiplash. She really WAS a different person. LotSB sort of made that a little better, but it was still a shock. I hadn't even realized she was the only one immune to dying till I saw this thread (and read the whole thing in one sitting). It doesn't really bother me, since she was my main Shep's LI.

But even after all of this, I believe it should be POSSIBLE for Liara to die in ME3. It would make it that much more important for me to keep her alive. But I'd rather there be no forced deaths. Virmire was bad enough. I've not lost a single person since. (Except when I thought Zaeed would make a great fireteam leader and got Tali shot in the face, but I immediately reset because ZOMG TALI!) But I find it ridiculous that anyone can believe that Liara is the "canon" LI. There is no canon. I refuse to believe it.

Also, I love Twilight God's sarcasm. I've been giggling over it for a while now.

Not that you can question her excuses, of course. You can play it like your Sheps just don't think it's worth it rather than they're actually so slack-jawed that they have no counterargument (I do), but you shouldn't have to. If they were going to force you to work with Cerberus, they needed to write it like Mordin x10. You can really hammer him about the genophage if you like, persistently across multiple conversations, and a Shep who thinks it was unforgivable has every opportunity to express that. Mordin and Shep both get cutting statements and intelligent rebuttals and at no point did I end any conversations with him thinking either character was an idiot with no respect for the other. That should have been Miranda and Shep. (It would make her turnaround if you blow the base make a hell of a lot more sense too...)

Joker's also a maddening one.

"I saw you get spaced!"
"Yes. Yes, you did, Joker. So next time I give you an order, what are you going to do, Joker, hmn?"
"Um... follow it?"
"And when are you going to follow it?"
"Um... immediately?"
"Good man."
"Thanks. Um. Shepard? Could you let go of my throat?"
"Oh. Sure. Sorry, buddy. So. How 'bout that Illusive Man?"

I mean, come on. Even my paragon Sheps would be tempted.

Pffft, you know Miranda would've had some excuse handy. "Kahoku was going to blow up our facility! We would have lost years of unethical research! What's more acceptable, the death of one man, or the loss of twenty scientists and invaluable research?"

"Uh-huh. Not buying it. You guys are murderers. And speaking of which, um, YOU DROPPED A THRESHER MAW ON MY FACE."

"That was research, Commander! The tests we ran on Toombs gave us so much information! Your squad died to save hundreds of lives!"

"Yeah, I don't remember volunteering for any of that."

"But still, doesn't it make you feel better knowing that we used that data for good?"

"...strangely, no."

All of this. I couldn't agree more. (Especially with the "there is no canon!" bit. I don't care how much Bioware tries to shove Liara down my throat, she is not my love interest and she never will be!)

I have a feeling that ME3 will offer more "Virmire" types of situations (which I'm dreading) and Liara shouldn't be immune from them. There shouldn't be a "You can leave anyone behind... except for Liara. She, um... She has to go do Shadow Broker things!" That would be really frustrating.

Also, I love Twilight God's sarcasm. I've been giggling over it for a while now.

Yeah, Twilight God and I had a great exchange back on page 14, where we quoted the end of Arrival.

Kawaii - Do you feel there is a character who could have been the one to recover Shepard's corpse? The arguments I've seen you throw out was that it was unreasonable for Liara to go after your Shep's corpse because how how you treated her. But the same could be said about any of the ME1 characters, right?
