Liara just doesn't work. She isn't the badass commando type and she isn't the kind of person to get hung-up on Shepard ord anyone else. She killed her own mother for heaven's sake.

She didn't sound that upset when taken to the Benezia fight to me.

I would have preferred Cerberus finding Shepard's body without any of the ME1 squadmates, Garrus included. It would've prevented any continuity issues stemming from Shepard's relationships with the first team. Plus it would have weirded me out if Garrus couldn't move on like a normal person following Shepard's death.

What the hell? I already responed to this... but my post is gone so whatever.

Anyway, yes, Cerberus finding the body alone might be better. That's not the point. IF you are going to have a ME1 squadmate work with them Tali works best. She is more believable as an action girl and has lots of hostility to Cerberus, which creates drama. Conflict is fun.

Garrus and Wrex would work better, but Garrus might not have been recruited and Wrex might be dead.

Liara just doesn't work. She isn't the badass commando type and she isn't the kind of person to get hung-up on Shepard ord anyone else. She killed her own mother for heaven's sake.

@Dean

That's a good idea too.

If Liara is unbelievable as Shepard's rescuer, then Tali is just as unbelievable. Both need saving to recruit them, both are naive young (relatively) girls, and neither would choose to work with Cerberus if given that choice. I'd even argue that Tali, out of every ME1 squaddie, is the least qualified to rescue Shepard. She's not military and she doesn't connect with his mind twice, like Liara.

Also, action girl? Tali is the least actiony squadmember I can think of in the series. Maybe tied with Kasumi who prefers stealth over combat.

They saw the Normandy explode. They did not see Shepard die, or recovered his body. Which is why, a month after the Normandy was destroyed, Shepard's friends were looking for any trace of him.

Tali isn't really an action character, just as much as Liara isn't. She isn't a commando either. The difference is, Tali's in a suit that can be damaged, and Liara isn't. Especially when it comes to hand to hand combat. Liara also has biotics, as well being good with a pistol. And Liara can be interested in both a Maleshep and a Femshep, while Tali isn't interested in femshep (yet).

Liara also told her mother to not give in and keep fighting. She didn't want her to leave. And has now has been retconned in Genesis as crying in her dead mother's arms. She was only over her mother after she was killed. But even then, she wanted to remember and honor her mother's memory. When she went looking for Shepard, it was unknown if he was dead or alive. And when she heard he was dead, she wanted to confirm it first before moving on. And when asked by Cerberus if she'd help, she said she would for Shepard. That even in death, Shepard can rely on her, out of respect for him.

Hardly. When we recruit Tali we see her take on three assassins by lobbing a grenade with lethal efficiency and pulling out a gun.

"You've seen me in action, Commander, you know what I can do."

Not to mention to get to that point she at some point tracked a geth squad and then ambushed one when it got separated from its unit.

In ME2 Shepard also says Tali recieved the best military training in the Migrant Fleet.

Liara is a scientist and archeologist. She aint no Indiana Jones.

Liara is like a 14 yo JRPG character who's a squadmate "just because".

I always take her to Pinnacle Station and "train" her there.

All total she only sets foot on two worlds in my game: Trebin and Ilos. Trebin has unexpected combat, but they're husks so we just keep 'em at bay and it all works out nicely.

Tali got herself cornered in an alley and surprised two assassins with a grenade. If you think she would have survived that without Shepard rescuing her, then you're deluded. She had a survival countdown, which is a pretty strong indicator of how much she needed rescuing.

Also, I should hope that a Quarian, the creators of the Geth, would be able to surprise and overcome a single Geth unit. She'd have to be pretty inept not to be able to do that.

She recieved the training, but does it mention she excelled at it? One could reasonably infer she does given her place in Shepard's squad, but you still need to look at these things with some skepticism. I received piano lessons for 5 years, but that was 8 years ago and I wouldn't say I'm a a piano expert now.

Also, I said Liara would save Shepard because she mind-connected with him twice. And she has biotics and knows how to use them, so it's reasonable that she had training in that. Probably training of equivalent or better stature than Tali's, given the current state of the Migrant Fleet and the skill of Asari biotics.

Meh, I just keep her on the Normady so she can sit on her ass doing.....god knows what on that laptop. I used to bring her to Noveria for the unique dialogue with Benezia but I don't even bother doing that anymore.

Liara is trained in biotics, since some asari simply don't try to learn how to properly use them, despite them coming naturally. Which is her main weapon in the comic, using it to lift, throw, and pull mercs, and use singularity. While Tali's more of a hacker, and better for fighting Geth or machines.

Why does every jackass create some forum to complain about the most minor of details? Please someone enlighten me.

Liara can't die, Liara doesn't have Warp in ME3, Liara becomes the Shadow Broker, who cares what each character gets or becomes in the game. That would be like me complaining that Shepard doesn't scratch his ass. Something so unnoticed and obscene that doesn't need to occur in the game.

There's favoritism for all characters, just because one can't die doesn't mean anything, that's just one aspect of the character. Notice other things, such as you don't get her the whole game in ME2, or that she has fewer stat points than other characters in ME2. Jacob and Miranda get one more stat point then everyone else, does that mean Bioware favors them more, maybe, maybe not.

Shut up about favoritism people.

Do we really want to count anything in Genesis as retconned canon? Because that thing is terrible. Just terrible.

Minor details? I'll show you minor details!

So, on Therum, when Shep rescues Liara, ever wonder where her team was? Archaeology is not a one man job, and I don't think Liara set up the whole scaffolding and elevator system by herself. And those prefabs, why would the geth set those up? I figure it's more likely the excavation team set those up as shelter/storage.

So what does Liara never, ever talk about? Why, the deaths of her entire team at the hands of the geth, which she presumably had a great view of while trapped in that prothean cell, of course! Lady is cooold, Han Olar could learn a thing or two from her.

You're welcome.

There are no bodies, nor does Shepard ever ask about them either. Shepard literally passes empty buildings, and makes no notes on what happened to everyone. Nor does he care about finding anyone except Liara. If anything, I just consider it an oversight. That, or everyone left after the place got mined and setup, leaving Liara alone to study.

Liara says she works alone is isn't acustomed to interacting with people so she was probably alone. Therum is an Alliance world yet, if you do Therum last, she says humans never come there. There didn't seem to be anyplace on Therum where people would live. Those other entrances, I assume, just lead to other parts of the prothean ruins.

In that case, I think I figured out why Liara isn't taken seriously as an archaeologist by her peers: she's an incredibly bad one. Archaeological digs are incredibly time consuming, slow things to do and there's a reason one gets a team of college students together to assist the doctorates. Preserving the context that every artifact and has is critical to understanding the culture that you're trying to unearth and it can take decades to excavate a site even with a full team. Indiana Jones, although an amazing badass, is a poor role model in this regard.

Or she's just so good she doesn't need help.

She's got all the time in the galaxy to explore ruins. She had been studying ruins longer than Shepard has been alive. And she had centuries remaining. She's was in no rush. Exploring prothean ruins doesn't quite strike me as being the same type of archaeology as unearthing dinoaurs or lost cities burioed under sand, for instance. Most prothean ruins are fairly intact and not buried. More like abandoned cities than any ancient ruin you'd find on earth today.

No.

I find Bioware's favoritism incredibly obnoxious, even if I like the character.
