Merrill and Fenris. Romancing Fenris was really painful. He's whiny as hell, impossible to please, and I almost gave up, if it weren't for the challenge of rival romancing him with my mage for the ironic factor....

Merrill is the most compelling character in this game for me, and probably the only one my Hawkes will romance from here on out.

Here's my take on the DA2 romanceable characters.

Merrill - naive, virginal blood mage who looks about 14. Yuck, yuck, yuck and ewwwww.
Fenris- Whine, whine, whine.
Anders- Yeaaaaahhhh, no thanks. Crazy mofo.
Isabela- Captain Promiscuity McNopants. Not as bad as the rest. My romance choice by default.

Oh Aveline...

I romanced isabella and anders 1st playthrough, I ended up siding with anders n having a full romance with him. I liked him from awakenings! Now I'm on 2nd playthrough n I'm trying to have a full romance with fenris but he's so damn hard 2 please!!!

I romanced Anders my first playthrough. Isabela is too easy to get, and I really don't like Merrill. I find the challenge of Fenris worth the pain, lol.

I have four Hawkes (2 male & 2 female). I only romance male LIs so it was"bi" Anders and Fenris all the way. I prefer Fenris. I prefer LIs with amnesia over LIs who talk about dead lovers.

Lol, I did this too.

...and then killed him at the end. Whoops. (Hey, he didn't leave me a choice.)

Firstly Anders because I wanted to dissect the character. I found him too corny and saying "I love you" almost instantly - it was a bit superficial and not to mention cringe-worthy (especially when he'd call you "my love.") Did have an affair w/Isabella too though :)

Only finished the one game, but...

Isabella, then in the middle of the story, Anders and Merrill. (This was with a LadyHawke.) I have since decided that Anders needs a good kick in the ass; he was a lot more fun in Awakenings. Never even bothered getting to know Fenris, he seems to have been put into the story purely to satisfy the angst/brood fandom. (Couldn't get Wolverine?)

If I play again, probably a male, sword/shield warrior Hawke, romancing Isabella. (And maybe siding with the Templars.) Partly for lack of options, partly because Isabella is one of the more interesting characters. Well, since her update.

Merrill, in a friendship romance.  Heard good things about the Rivalmancy though.

Isabella on the second go-'round.

Fenris. I am playing through again right now and I can't  bring myself to try with Anders. That man creeps me out. All that "drown the world in blood" stuff is a  bit of a turn off. :)

Who did you romance?

Yo' momma!

Which, actually, means Isabella. Only because while Merril was sweet and cute, her sex scene was disgusting with her spine poking out and her ribs sticking through her skin like a ghoul. Yech.

Isabella was a hose-bag, but at least she was a hot hose-bag.

2nd playthrough as male warrior- Anders at first, then broke it off and went with Isabela

The first time I played DA2 my diplomatic rogue did friend/romance with Anders because I thought he was an interersting character in Awakenings (and he likes cats!). I did keep him in the party when I sided with the mages. In Varric's epilogue he says everyone eventually left except Anders who stayed with Hawke.

The 2nd playthrough my diplomatic mage did rival/romance with Anders. This was more interesting because you get a lot more information about Anders. Justice even came out a couple times and threatened me If I took his little boy toy Anders from him. I got Anders to join me in supporting the Templars! And boy, did he ever complain about it too. But it was worth it in the end, to have all the Templars kneeling before me and Anders was delicious!. Interestingly, in Varric's epilogue he doesn't say Anders stayed with Hawke.

The 3rd playthrough my humorous mage friend/romance with Fenris the Angst King. Even got him to join me in supporting the Mages, and yes LOTS more complaining ... Do all the male romance figures in DA2 whine so darn much? Isabela and Merrill never whined.

The 4th playthrough my humorous rogue friend/romance with Isabela. She has a lot of funny comments to say.

The 5th playthrough my aggressive warrior friend/romance with Merrill. She is very sweet but rather bland.

I am curious about Sebastion, but I heard romance with him is all platonic... How the heck is he supposed to re-establish his family's line If he keeps the family jewels flattened under Andraste's face buckle??

I played the special exception case  during the scene where you must decide what to do with Anders in the Last Straw (Kill him, Send him away or Ask him to join you).

Normally, Anders will flatly refuse to join you and would rather die than to help you support the Templars, BUT If you have Anders at 100% rival and supported all his personal quests and gave him all his gifts, you can convince him to see that blowing up the chantry was a horrible act and helping you support the templars would be a step in the right direction to atone for that. You do not have to romance him for this.

As to why Templars did not immediately execute him for destroying the chantry: I dunno thats just the way the Bioware writers wrote this special case. But when you think about it... I stomped the Arishok, Orsino, a ton of abominations, shades, AND Meredith ... what templar is going to try kill my boyfriend right in front of me?  Naw, I got them all shaking in their tin boots *evil grins*

I forgot to mention that I also had Carver (templar) and Fenris in the same party with my mage and Anders, just for maximum amusement. Thats was  fun *more evil grins*! Like watching 3 tom cats stuck in a closet together. Carver never tried to kill Anders although he plenty of oppurtunity to do so, in fact Carver does something suprisingly couragous to stand up for what is right, that even Anders wasnt brave enough to do. Little brothers can be so suprising some times (in a good way).

Maybe bringing Merrill along with Carver through all the DLCs made him think twice about the advantages of having big sister around... who would have thunk? ... Carver and Merill would make such a cute couple...

Fenris all the way. Because I'm not a mage-lover, nor am I a mage-hater, but I rarely play lesbian romances (in this case, because I saw Isabela and Merrill as sisters rather than romance options). My opinions about mages are neutral, as while mages should be given more rights, they should still have a circle to help them control themselves and learn the dangers of magic (but more as a school than a gilded prison). I also understand where Fenris comes from with his grumbling, (especially after "Alone", due to the Nasty Implications that Danarius brought with him) therefore I honestly did not mind Fenris' "HATE ALL THE MAGES" talk.

If you're a mage-lover and want to romance Fenris, I recommend tuning out his griping about mages and just listening to the beautiful way he says it.

The Voice itself was pleasant, shame about the dialogue though.

I play each LI at least once, but then I end up being pretty monogamous gamewise. It's Fenris for me in DA 2. At least he's smart, angry but smart. I find intelligent men to be sexy. Didn't like him until he spoke to the Arishok in his own language. It was then that I realized the elf had a brain.
