I had intended to try them all but then I met Merrill. I found her story to be interesting and found her awkward shyness to be adorable. Very similar to Liara in ME1. So I always end up romancing her.
Who did you romance?

wait wait did you actually get him to join the templars??? wouldent they immediatly execute him for destroying the chantry?
I played the special exception case during the scene where you must decide what to do with Anders in the Last Straw (Kill him, Send him away or Ask him to join you).
Normally, Anders will flatly refuse to join you and would rather die than to help you support the Templars, BUT If you have Anders at 100% rival and supported all his personal quests and gave him all his gifts, you can convince him to see that blowing up the chantry was a horrible act and helping you support the templars would be a step in the right direction to atone for that. You do not have to romance him for this.
As to why Templars did not immediately execute him for destroying the chantry: I dunno thats just the way the Bioware writers wrote this special case. But when you think about it... I stomped the Arishok, Orsino, a ton of abominations, shades, AND Meredith ... what templar is going to try kill my boyfriend right in front of me? Naw, I got them all shaking in their tin boots *evil grins*
I forgot to mention that I also had Carver (templar) and Fenris in the same party with my mage and Anders, just for maximum amusement. Thats was fun *more evil grins*! Like watching 3 tom cats stuck in a closet together. Carver never tried to kill Anders although he plenty of oppurtunity to do so, in fact Carver does something suprisingly couragous to stand up for what is right, that even Anders wasnt brave enough to do. Little brothers can be so suprising some times (in a good way).
Maybe bringing Merrill along with Carver through all the DLCs made him think twice about the advantages of having big sister around... who would have thunk? ... Carver and Merill would make such a cute couple...

I ended up doing a Rivalrymance with Merrill on my third playthrough. It was OK-ish but I wasn't really feeling at much as my Sarcastic FemHawke/Isabela romance.
I'm not sure what it was, maybe because I played as an Agressive Hawke, maybe because although the rivalrymance did kind of have a progression that made sense in the end, it just seemed like that particularity Hawke wouldn't have liked her as much as the others..
Although to be fair, I think Sarcastic Female Hawke and Isabella probably came across as the most natural couple I've played in either game. Which is impressive, considering she wasn't my favorite out of the 8 options .

Fenris with all my females and Isabela with all my males.
I once tried Anders but I ended up deleting that out of disgust. I can't stand that fanatic terrorist at all.

First playthrough, Anders (friend), siding with the mages (though I was tempted by Fenris (rival).) Not happy with how that turned out. Lying terrorist bastard.
Second & third playthrough, Fenris (friend). First siding with mages (got him to join me), then siding with Templars.
Next I think I might try out Isabela. Merrill... she's funny and all, but just not very interesting to me from a romance perspective. Too innocent and childish for my taste.

I always do femhawke with anders
I just love angsty tragic love stories
I did 1 playthough with a malehawke/isabela, though I liked it I thought the morrigan romance in origins was better

So far I have done:
Anders/Friend (mage and rogue male Hawkes and Rival male rouge Hawke)
Fenris/ Friend (mage and rogue male Hawkes and Rival male mage Hawke)
Isabella/ Friend (mage male Hawke)
Merrill/Friend (male rogue Hawke)
Sebastian/Friend (Female rogue Hawke)
Anders is a head trip, worse on rival. Fenris is okay either way, just not very talkative. I found Merrill to be a total ditz and nearly intolerable - I wanted to move her back out after she killed the Keeper. Sebastian is entirely chaste. Isabella is all about fun and it never felt like she was really committed to the relationship.
So, in the end Fenris is the best of a lot of poor options IMO. Not that it really matters except if you are doing the herbalist achievement and need that ambrosia, then romance is the easiest way to keep Isabella for act 3.

- Anders (friend) x diplomatic female mage Hawke (spirit healer, pro-mage). My favorite one: they match each other well. Done it twice.
- Fenris (friend) x aggressive female warrior Hawke (pro-templar). Also match each other well, but I wanted to kill them both by the end of the game
- Fenris (rival) x diplomatic female mage Hawke (spirit healer, pro-mage). Felt like a mother and a son rather than two lovers. Not my cup of tea.

Isabela and then Merrill. I managed to romance both Leliana and Morrigan and keep them both in O but in this it was not possible in DA2 it seems.

I usually just romance Anders, cause it's the bloody easiest one to be involved in and I can't think of who to romance lol XD.
The Origins romances were a lot better than DA2 :<.

I've romanced everyone except for Merril. I do plan on trying that eventually, but I just don't see her that way. Oh, and I haven't bothered with Sebastian yet although I am planning on trying that in my current playthrough...something tells me Hawke will regret that though.
My favourite romances are Fenris and Isabela (friendship). I just feel like they have such interesting stories that you kind of miss out on if you don't romance them. Plus, I just like complicated characters. Oh, and to add to this - I get the sense that Fenris needs Hawke more than the other characters. Anders has his patients and his rebellion. He will be fine without Hawke. Isabela has her ship. Even Merril has the Dalish (sort of, as least for a while) and other elves in the alienage. But Fenris is completely alone if you don't romance him (and if Isabela doesn't stick around after Act 2). I don't know why I find this appealing, but I do. Also, that look that Fenris gives you. And the way he says "I am yours." Gets me every time.
But even Anders' romance has grown on me (I romanced him in my first playthrough, wherein he totally broke Hawke's heart, and then I was bitter for a while but now I like him again).

Isabella and Merrill.
I can't take the Edward-sparkly broody types, unless they can handle it well, like Thane.
