The shotgun infiltrator play-style is pretty ninja-esque, and ultimately feels more like you're infiltrating. Charge GPS + cloak, run behind enemy lines while the enemy has their back turned then shoot 2x, go behind cover, wait for cloak to recharge then cloak while behind cover and run out to do the same thing. Feels so bad ass.
is it really a "taboo" to use AR/shotgun with an infiltrator?

Indeed.
Reached the collector base point and took up the Evisorator (I never really liked using the GPS for some reason...possibly because I loathe the Geth like the Quarians for some odd reason) it was actually good fun to do that.
At the same time so was using a Vanguard XD. oh the annoying dilema of looking at each class...
Do I want a class with a focus on tech abilities or do I want a class that I can choose Assault Rifles to have a more mid-close range battle?
Honestly? the Vanguard is winning by that alone. I just can't snipe anymore. My own being and every fiber of my body just, rejects the idea of doing that while my team rushes into danger (a big offender being Tali...god I love her to bits XD)

Contrary to what you seem to be saying, you can play aggressily and use a sniper rifle.
I've kept my entire team alive through Collector ship platforms for example while sniping as much as I could with the Widow. That's because I don't just sit back and insist on sniping every single thing from the longest possible distance. Infiltrators are best when you take advantage of all your abilities. The Widow is perfect for clearing out Collectors before Harby can use them, for example. But that doesn't mean you can't get up close and personal with an SMG in the same fight. And in fact getting close at the right moment is exactly what will save your squadmates.
Much in the same way, I think an infiltrator that only uses shotguns and only does CQC is a bit handicapped. Might as well play a vanguard then, as it seems you've concluded as well.
All my infiltrators snipe, and they all do CQC. They also all use tech skills, with Incineration Blast being the absolute favorite, but AI Hacking sure is fun on Geth missions.

A Infiltrator with the Viper, Locust, Predator, and Eviscerator is a terror and all around combat specialist. The Viper is a Mattock with a scope, use it as such, Locust is a mid-level AR rifle, with the Predator being a decent mid range antiarmor/health gun, while the Eviscerator is a terror gun with great burst damage. It can be played much the same way a Vanguard with AR bonus can be played because except for the Mattock the Locust is almost as good as any other AR.
By the way, bonus weapons and upgraded weapons are all noted in the save data, which this program allows you to edit......

The program was originally designed to edit xbox saves but also does PC as well. So if you want to have a Infiltrator with a Widow and shotguns you can with ease.

That would be my favorite kind of infiltrator.
Unfortunately I have kind of strict policy against modifying my saves or cheating. Both because I can't stop when I begin doing that, and also because I'm not too fond of third party programs messing with my saves (although no they probably don't do anything wrong).

^lol, well I didn't start modding the saves until I had 3-4 complete runs unmodded. Then it was to add minerals so I didn't have to mine. Later it was minerals and money after about 10 plays, and now since I am on 25-30th play, it is do something interesting to keep it fun and just because.
So far it doesn't look like any damage done, as I can use them NG+ and the editor I gave also allows you to fix Conrad Verner so you can actually see the Paragon scenes and how they differ from the "glitched" renegade scenes you mostly/always see.

Yep. I know. But ME is a bit special since you can import saves. I made the mistake of throwing some away earlier. Now I'm keeping them backed up and "original". There's a bit of OCD going on here too.
There are some games I won't even play without mods on the other hand. Oblivion for example. I always cheated in Fallout 3 as well just to avoid obsessing over getting the int bobblehead early and so on.
