so, near the beginning of the game, i was looking for my dying father, along with my mother.
i remember her saying something about something in the treasury, but before i got there, i found my father and was swept away with duncan somewhere else.
so my question is: did i screw up? do i REALLY need whatever was in the treasury?
did i already screw up?

It's your family sword and some armor. You won't die without it and will find some better gear later, so it's mostly if your character wants the family sword for RP purposes.

The sword+shield is nice for your level, as they both add +4 to attack (+8 combined), but you'll find better stuff down the road. If you have a save from somewhere during the hn origin, I might consider reloading. If not, you can manage just fine.

If you haven't progressed past the origin story, you might still be able to get the family sword and shield from the treasury (so long as you accepted the quest when it was offered). If you're a sword and shield guy, for roleplaying reasons you might want to have them for a fight later in the game. The sword will outmoded by that point in the game, but tier level doesn't seem to make that much of a difference for shields, and it's not that hard of a fight so you can afford to use subpar equiupment if it gives you roleplaying satisfaction.
