One of the things that I really enjoyed about ME2 was the way the companions were handled in the final "suicide" mission. Without getting into spoilery details, I really liked the way that that mission was set up so that the player would need to select different companions across different parts of the mission based on the companions' talents/nature.
I also liked that things such as a companion not being properlly skilled for the task or wether the companion was loyal or not it would affect their performance when selected. And how selecting these companions was integrated into the story as the mission progressed.
IMO the way this was done really made the companions feel like they had a purpose for being used and that selecting a companion for any given task mattered to the outcome of the mission. In the original ME I generally would leave some companions collecting dust on the Normandy because I didn't much care for the abilities they brought and they made no contribution to my game.
Will MW3's final mission (Or more than that) be designed in a way that companions have to be chosen again in the same manner as ME2? Or will ME3 go back to the same formula that ME had where you just choose a couple of companions and they really don't matter or affect the mission in any way? I really hope the former.
Will ME3's final mission use companions similar to ME'2 suicide mission?

I would love if they did this THROUGHOUT the entire game! That was one of my favorite parts of ME2. Plus it would give meaning to the companions other than just extra guns on missions!
Make each story mission (not side quests and others obviously) a mission in which all the squadmates will take part based on their abilities... you need a biotic to stabilize the building allowing you to escape... choose liara. You need someone to cover you by sniping while you perform some other task... choose garrus. That kind of thing.
That would be pretty epic IMO.

I did feel the way the final mission in ME2 was handled was done very well. Just through a little thinking and common sense I was able to pick the best squaddies for each situation and all my squadmates survived. ( I didn't have to look at any silly guide on the internet.) I would actually like to see something like that in ME3 although I do want something new as well. So maybe use that setup somewhere in the game just not as the final mission.

Sgt_Reed - ditto your thoughts. I really think it would be fun to have your base 2 companions but be able to assign your team-mates in certain missions to make the full use of your squad. Having Garrus Fire-team radio input and status while making a parallel push was damned awesome and really made me feel like I had a top-notch crew mowing down Collectors.

I dunno about throughout--I kind of feel like it would get tedious after a while, and would also probably be taxing on development resources. I would, however, love to see several missions like this spread out over the course of the game.
These are the (guddam) Reapers we're talking about. They're a huge, terrifying foe. You've spent a couple of games amassing the most skilled allies in the galaxy, and they should be used properly! Even when I make a real effort to mix up my squad for each mission, I think the squaddies spend entirely too much time twiddling their thumbs on the Normandy. ME2 at least gave some of them something to do (calibrations), but many of them still had the distinctive feeling of just sitting around wondering why Shepard had picked them up if they were only going to get off the ship once a month.

yeah, that's why I said, for just the main story missions... as in both games there's only been, what, like 4-5 main story related missions? That wouldn't be too much IMO. And it's not like the decisions would or should be the same in every mission.
But you like you said, we're fighting the reapers... not the collectors, so... we need something to make it feel like a bigger struggle and more intense like the SM was (which IMO should have been a lot longer and made use of almost every squadmates abilities... like Thane ... who you don't even need at all... )

I think it will be the same concept except for the squaddies will be replaced by armies and fleets and Shepard is the Grand Poo Bah of them all!

In 2 of the gameplay scenes from E3 one had Mordin helping and the other had Legion . I think that many missions will have have a character helping out just like the final missions in ME2.

I think perhaps this sort of thing could be done in the keystone missions that occur throughout the game (The important story missions); like in ME2's: Horizon, Dead Reaper, Collector Base, etc.
I definately agree with all of you guys, I think that splitting the last mission into parts that are affected by the loyalty and abilities of each character really give a sense of purpose to the companions.
Last night I completed a playthrough and experimented using different companions in different situations and was so surprised to see some live and some die really unexpectedly.
From reading the new game informer Casey Hudson was asked this same question and he replied that in ME3 you are collecting assets for the war effort and decisions affect the overall outcome for the finale. This sounds to me however that he refers to overall mission decisions and not companion decisions based on skills like ME2's suicide mission. I hope I'm reading that wrong however because I really hope ME3 has missions like this.
No game has really quite made a true contribution for companions like this for me before it would be a shame if that didn't appear in the final game of the trilogy.
