Perhaps this has been discussed before? I am curious as to what Harbinger is referring to when it says "we will find another way," to do what exactly? I mean, let's face it, the Reapers excel at obliterating civilizations, definitely not because of a lack of practice. They probably know all the moves by now, the lengths to which any civilization near the brink of destruction will go to in order to survive.

Furthermore, they're probably the most technologically advanced race in the known universe at that point. That being said, why use the Collectors at all? To do what exactly? What's the point of building a single human reaper when you have an army of thousands (or more) and you have every confidence you will succeed? Gain time? What for, the Arrival? They couldn't have been referring to their standard protocol for obliterating all sentient life-forms since it's already been perfected. Plus, the galaxy doesn't want to believe the Reapers exist so, why not lay low, and instruct your minions to lay low as well, until you've finally made the journey across dark space?

The Space Terminator was going to punch the Citadel into submission and then embarass the entire galactic civilization into surrender by flashing its massive Space Genitalia at them.

Bad guys always monologue about how bad ass they are. That way, the good guy can use a snappy one liner, making a pun on the monologue while beating the crap out of the bad guy.

I think he was being built to replace sovereign as the next vanguard to sit and wait till the next cycle in 50 000 years time. Since he's the new guy it does make sense he should get the worst job.

Have the Reapers ever needed to deviate from their plan? It's seems to be quite effective (trap them using tech you know but they don't, wipe out the heads of goverment, isolate every star system, gain census data, make sleeper agents to hunt down other organics you missed, and stick around for a few hundred years just in case), so I can see it working flawlessly 99.99999% of the time. If so, it's pretty easy to see why they might suck at actually making plan Bs. It might sound stupid in hindsight, but if plan A worked for millennia, you might not bother to make another plan.

This... perhaps without the flashing.

I think he's refering to capturing Sheploo. The Collectors wanted his body from the Shadow Broker, and Harbinger controlled the Collectors.

I think we can assume the Human Reaper was being built to be stronger than Sovereign, and it would easily be able to open the Citadel relay on its own.

Since that failed, the Reapers "found another way" by flying here, apparently.

I feel the Reapers are in a hurry for something.  They seem desperate to start this cycle ASAP.

I don't know what, but that's what it feels like.

One of my major complaints about ME2 was that it was merely exposition for establishing teammates. You finish exactly where you started; cool ship, a bunch of friends, nobody believes you, and the Reapers are still coming. The Human Reaper was most likely going to be one of many created PRIOR to the arrival of the main fleet, as evidenced by the Geth Reaper shown at E3. They were preparing other allies in the wake of Nazara's destruction. The goal was to build a sizable fighting force that could overwhelm the Citadel and manually open the Relay from dark space. Since one wasn't enough, even with the Geth heretics, more Reapers would be needed to get the job done, hence the Human Reaper.

When you destroy the Human Reaper, the ultimate goal of the Collectors in this instance, and the imminent destruction of the Collector Base, Harbinger stopped assuming control. The Reapers decided at that point to say "the Hell with the bus, I'll walk." They don't want to fly into the galaxy; they want to insert themselves into the heart of it and cut off the supply lines.

The goal of the Collectors was to make a new "Vanguard of our Destruction." When you kill the larva, the Reapers decide to act before more damage is done and their plan is revealed. They know Shepard knows about them, they know he is trying to stop them. If they waste more time trying to use the Citadel backdoor, the peoples of the galaxy could be better prepared.

Referenced to the Arrival DLC ending in which Harbinger describes Shepard as an annoyance; Alpha was supposed to let the Reapers leapfrog to the Citadel. Now it appears they have to progress all the way to the Charon Relay...and eat Earth in the process.

I like this idea. Had some vapid hopes of this as well, and it might come into play. Maybe something will come about from it in ME3.[/quote]

They seem hurried as the extinction cycle is part of their reprodution cycle, and they failed to reproduce, and apparently they attempted to trigger a galaxy wide extinction through the Rachni hundreds or thousands of years ago when they realized the keepers were ot resonding, so yeah, things just seem to keep on going bad for them. Combined with the fact that they lost Soveriegn, an event that we now only happened twice in their history (Leviathan, Direlect Reaper), the Reapers are also on edge. Also, if they serve some higher purpose, which I believe is to prevent an event known as "The Big Rip" (where the universe tears itself apart, oposite of the big bang) by preventig the uncontrolled abuse of dark energy and dark matter, then yes, they REALLY need to hurry things up.

I've always figured the Collectors were just for performing experiments for the Reapers until Sovereign was destroyed. Then the Reapers used them to get a head start on building a new Reaper while they were traveling from dark space. Why wait a few years to start building the new Reaper when you have an army of minions that can get some work done for you so you finish faster?

Makes you wonder if the Reapers existence is the universes answer for white blood cells, cleaning away the organic disease that will eventually destroy it from within.

Reapers might be mobile for most of the 50,000 year cycle pruning all the galaxies in the universe with an even larger intricate mass relay network spanning the cosmos.

Also maybe the idea of creating new reapers such as the Human Reaper is their way of evolving and adapting to the new strands of disease that have sprung up around the galaxy.

The problem with the White Blood Cell theory is that they gave us the technology to progress so quickly, so in a way doing that makes things harder for them...

Perhaps they need to ensure we progress down their line of technology while they're off doing whatever it is Reapers do in downtime. By not providing easy access to their technology, we might develop along a path they can't control as well. Also by progressing down their lines of tech, we develop items made up of their tech and thus they can collect and reuse our productions as fuel or something else.

After all until the Protheans disconnected the Keepers from their control all the harvesting/reaping/extinction of prior cycles went reasonably smoothly. Or there would be more evidence of **** ups probably.

We all know bacteria will kill the Reapers once they start eating our food, breathing our air and drinking our fluids.

This will be the ending of ME3, narrated by Morgan Freeman.

This sums up the entire Mass Effect series:

1) Harbinger is referring to a way into Citadel/inhabited space.

2) The collectors are used as scouts while the reapers hibernate, so they can conserve energy. Only a small vanguard is needed to stay awake (Sovereign and harbinger) while the rest sleep. Since they can't be everywhere, the collectors serve as intermediaries.

3) Building the human reaper - not entirely sure on this one, but it may be simply to get a new reaper to replece sovereign, as the reapers feel that their optimal number is very specific. ALSO, the collectors had access to Citadel space throught the Omega 4 relay, but the other reapers did not seeing as the Citadel wasn't activated as a relay for them with Sovereign's defeat. In all likely hood, they need a reaper to activate that and it was deemed that building a new reaper with access  to citadel space (throught the Omega 4) would be the most expedient method to trigger this.

4) The Arrival seems like a unique instance actually. Humans found the artifact and triggered it and that would work as a beacon to let the Reapers in, but it was pretty much luck for the Reapers that humans found it. They couldn't count on humanity finding one of the many beacons they left, but it is what ended up happening. Just another one of their many plans.

5) As to laying low now. . . with the defeat of sovereign and the collectors and the shut down in Arrival - the Reapers have theoretically no way to know what's happening in Citadel space (though I guess they were able to get a hold of Cerberus somehow). For all they know, once Shep stopped the collectors, the humans have figured out a way to stop them. Seeing as the humans seem to be posing the greatest threat to their plans, it's prudent to A) wipe them out first, and B) do it sooner rather than later. The longer you give your opponent, the more time they have to prepare.

I think that's all of them~

I always thought that the Human Reaper would open the Citadel Relay. Now Harbinger and the Reapers have to "find another way" when Shepard destroys the Collector Base or take it.

And the answer is, traveling through dark space, which takes time...
