I find it unrealistic that in the two seconds it takes for the drone to shoot down, the entire deposit of metal is mined out. In about a minute, the entire planet is devoid of metal. I think that each beacon shot down to the planet "depletes" the deposit so that it cant be mined again, but gives 0 metals.
Instead, after every mission, the player receives a small amount of metal from each beacon. Say, 5% of the entire deposit. However, after 20 missions, the deposit does not disappoear. It keeps giving 5%, as well as every other beacon in the galaxy giving 5%. Think of it as marking minerals in ME1, and the Alliance then sends mining crews to actually mine the metals. Shepard then gets royalties, or a cut of the action from each ore harvest.

What do you guys think?

Is there a way to "fix" mining? Does it need to be fixed or cut?

What you are proposing would not really solve anything. I would still have to spend some time scanning the planets and dropping probes. Which is, after the 5th or 6th time, incredibly dull...

You have no problems with biotics, invisibility cloaks, omni-blades, spaceships that fly like planes through an atmosphere, giant metal being made out of smoothied mortals, yet you find planet probing unrealistic?

I think we should punch the minerals.

I just found the whole mining business tedious. I think I would prefer the way they did it in Dragon Age 2 over what we have today.

Was it really any better? I find it to be as much of a hindrance as was the scanning. But that might have been more of an issue with the level design and variety of DAII.

I don't know really. I would probably prefer no mining at all, as Shepard is a Soldier, not some businessman miner. But as they probably want some kind of resource management thing in the game I think the Dragon Age 2 system was better.

With it you got a resource, then you didn't have to bother mining anymore of it. I want the mining bit to be as small as possible. If you find Iron, you have a supply of iron and don't need to find more.

The clear answer is for Shepard to own a small mining business. Normining.

I find lots of things unrealistic, and I made threads about them a few months ago. This is just something that came to mind. With this, you can mine a few planets and then never mine again, relying on the income from the probes after each mission.

Ah yes, "mining"...

It does need a MAJOR overhaul.
I know what we need: Peons!

Why don't the Alliance just issue a few mechs to us so we can station them on certain mineral rich planets so we can intake a steady supply of much needed minerals while we save the galaxy? We can't fight a war if we're too busy probing Uranus for minerals :bandit: I say, let's purchase mechs if we need more, station them on planets, fly over to the planets to pick up our resources, do research and buy weapon mods if need be, and get right into the fighting and story where we should be.
