1) Please register the game on the forums. This is not an accusation, but given the spate of users with illegally downloaded copies coming to the forums asking for help, forum registration is the only way we can be sure we are dealing with a legit copy. Illegally downloaded copies include hacked and modified files which could be either corrupt, or full of malware. Once its registered, we will be happy to help. Forums Registration here;

2) Please post a full problem report as per this thread: http://social.biowar...6/index/4795299

I too have just experienced this problem - I cant get passed the opening movie without it crashing after downloading from Steam overnight.
I have now registerd my version as outlined above and here is a screen shot of my system:

I notice during the opening equence the music over powers the vocals until the the end of the initial sequence and then goes into the Normandy destruction (presumably) when it crashes.
I am running 2 x 8800GT in SLI

Given that its a Steam install, I would recommend the following;
1) Download and install DirectX9.0c
from Microsofts website. It -should- have been included with the Steam
install, but Steam has a horrible habit of not actually installing it if
it detects a newer release.
2) Verify your Steam cache intergrity.
Also, you havent listed your video driver revision. Anything after 258.96 (June 2010) often incorporates tweaks which are designed for newer games, and can often leave older games such as ME2 suffering performance-wise.
As forthe music volume levels, you can tweak tat in the main menu so its not so loud.

Maga quick Bigsnot, respect...
I'm using 258.96
I have already downloaded DirectX9.0c from the link
How does one verify Steam Cache integrity?
TIA.

Couldnt tell you how to do that exactly, as I dont use Steam, I only know that its one of the potential fixes for Steam related problems. If you havent already done so, take a quick look on Steams support FAQ page (if they have one) and it should be in there.

Well I managed to get it going yesterday and played fine all night, fired up today and logged into Cerberus and now it crashes within seconds with chessboard artifacts all over the screen and the video drops out and my monitor says no signal... GRRRRRR.....

^ That sounds like a video card dying or a video driver fubar. You may need to try different drivers to see if you can find a stable one, or you may need to check your cards well.
