They're both derived from the patter song(s) from Pirates of Penzance. Gilbert and Sullivan operas, or comic operas from 120years ago(or so) were basically broadway.

Ahhh, now that's good to know! It is almost like an inspiration of an inspiration when it comes to this song. It's almost safe to say that the PIrates of Penzance theme is pretty popular. So really, Bab5 AND Mass Effect were inspired by Gilbert & Sullivan. There was an episode (I believe it was season 4 episode 10) where Londo expresses his displeasure for Gilbert and Sullivan and Sheridan "messes" with Londo by quoting a line from the duo that made Londo "uneasy." LOL

Necro'ed thread or not, The similarites are there. I just wondered how much of a fan Drew Karpyshyn was of Babylon 5; let alone all the other sci fi references in Mass Effect.

Capn being the trusted source you've become in my eyes, I almost want to ask if they really said those lines in the game.  It would be one hell of a nerdgasm for me ^_~

B5 was such an under rated scifi unfortunately.  I'd say the effects for the show didn't hold up of the years...but they weren't even exactly great effects back in the day when it was made.  CG wise "maybe" they were, but compared to miniatures they weren't even in the same league.
B5, like DS9 (and ME1!), was all about story and characters.  I'll always loves those shows for their character development.

When I first encountered the rachni's discription in ME, all I could picture was the shadow forces from B5.

a youtube goodie for kicks :)

Ha, no I just put ME characters in front of the lines from the intro, and tweaked the last 2 a bit.

The B5 S4 opening dialog, AWESOME! :D
Babylon 5 really was underrated and it is STILL better then most of the sci-fi shows that are out there. Granted, there are some great shows now but Babylon 5 is still gold in my eyes. I guess the inspriation that was put into ME series is probably why I love the game so much.

I'm watching Babylon 5 for the first time (yeah, I know, johnny come lately to the real world) but I sure see a lot of things that could have heavily influenced Mass Effect in this series.

Anyone agree?

Mass Effect probably borrows elements from a lot of science fiction.

Babylon 5
Star Trek
The Terminator (Geth&Human Reaper = Terminators)
Star Wars(Asari powers = The Force)
etc

Shepard himself comes off as a cross between Captain Kirk and John Connor.

I actually thought of Battlestar Galactica when I look at the Geth/Quarians. But yes, the Reapinator definitely goes beyond borrowing.

As to the earlier question about what made B5, IMHO, the best sci-fi TV series of all time, is that it is a complete story. Characters change from beginning to end, and have believable motives that lead to grand successes and horrific failures. Elements that seem trivial (straight from the beginning of the series, which almost seems a throwaway intro episode) blossom into galaxy shattering events. Humans are a player, but they aren't close to being the power of the galaxy. But even the most ancient of races don't have it all together.
