In ME 1, we see him/her chasing one guy all over the galaxy... meanwhile, u can let him do some side errands like chasing weird monkeys or deciding whether a child (totally unrelated to him/her) should be genetically modified or not... (not caring Liara is still trapped or Feros is still under attack)...

In ME 2, he/she became really serious about his job as errand boy/girl and recuritment agent... he/she spent more than half the game doing errands for his/her squadmates... some who will immediately sleep with him/her as an added bonus... not caring the reapers or collectors are advancing very soon (depending on the order u do the assignments)... ocassionally, he/she might even get some errands from Ceberus even though he/she had repeated said he/she are Alliance through and through...

Now that ME 3 is coming and Earth is in danger... I wonder how much errands bioware is going to give him so as to not make the story totally unbelievable...

I foresee most side missions/assignments having some sort of beneficial impact for Shepard, even if it's indirect (hey! I just happened to need 2000 eezo... new biotic cooldown, here I come!). I can't see how else they'll do it, what with all the planets being exterminated with extreme prejudice.

Maybe they'll be more akin to 'the STG needs moar people! Quick, go to plot point #4544464 1/3 and extract the seemingly hapless salarian from extraordinary circumstances' and 'Cerberus is trying to accidently this star system, hurry and save the exotic race located there'.

We've already seen a snippet of one in the demo, saving the fertile krogan female in order to bring Wrex and the krogan on side. We've also seen the salarian councillor on the Normandy, so odds on we'll have some form of "Salarian Homeworld" loyalty quest to do as well.
