Does anybody ever start a brand new game of BG2 as if they had also played through BG1 adding in the STAT bonuses you would've recieved?

I do. I just started a game yesterday and shadowkeeper'd in experience as though I had played through BG1.
I had been playing on BGT until I discovered that my install was bugged (Imoen does not spawn and open the cage after the intro movie), so I had to revert to an old installation that was stable.
Whatever rules you think make sense and that help you have fun are the rules you should follow. We're all single players here.
You only need agree to specific rules if you participate in a no-reload challenge.

Cool man. I appreciate the response. I've read about other folks doing it and I was thinking of doing same.

I always run every character through both games. It feels wrong to me to just start in BG2 with all the benefits of BG1, but without having actually earned them.

Sometimes I feel like that too, Matuse. I consistently felt that way when I was younger.
But now that I'm older, I often feel like, heck, I've played D&D for over two decades, and I've been through the Baldur's Gate trilogy more than a dozen times, not to mention Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 and several other D&D clone games.
I figure I've "earned my stripes" by now, and there's no real need to trudge through what would amount to drudgery for my current level of player skill.

I'm very much into 'playing by the book', so if I start BG2 straight away, I'll do it with the stats and xp the new game offers. It does not seem to matter much. I've 3 BG 2 games running right now (my first ones): 2 characters completed BG 1, 1 was rolled especially for this game, and all are about equally succesful (but didn't get past chapter 2 yet, though, don't know what difference it'll make in the long run).
