Hi all, super noob question here, but I've recently decided I want to try picking up this game series to see what the fuss is all about. Thing is, I don't know which version or where to buy from is the best. I'm thinking about the 4 in 1 boxset but I've heard about some localization issues with that one... so would it be better to buy the complete original and second seperately, or download them on Good Old Games, or what? I basically want the most complete and hassle-free version I can get.

There isn't really a wrong answer to that question, but I'd lean slightly toward the GoG version as it avoids the whole "needing a disc in the drive to run" hassle.

I'm running the GOG version -- works perfectly (so long as you turn off the bundled FoxIt Reader installation) and doesn't require a disc in the drive.

Though i'm not sure if the GOG BGMain.exe is compatible to ToBEx and other exe-changing mods.
And TUTU/BGT also restore the disc check.

Do any other mods restore the disk check on the GoG versions? Specifically NPC Project for BG1, Tweaks for both BG1 and BG2, extra NPC mods like Gavin or Kelsey, or Sword Coast Strategems?

I've been thinking about buying the GoG versions specifically to get rid of the disk check. I think I could use Shadowkeeper to duplicate most kits if I just had to have one in BG1.

Are there any reasons I'm not thinking of to use BGT or Tutu? Isn't it mostly just to get the kits and the interface? And some people mod the original interface back in on them anyway.

AFAICT it is 100% compatible. I'm running a GoG version with SCS2 (which includes TobEx v19) and it works just fine.

I'm not even sure there are any differences between GoG BGMain.exe and "vanilla" BGMain.exe (latest patch).

No, they don't. (GoG BG1 + GoG BG2/ToB + BGT v1.11 here).

Why would they? It just doesn't make any sense that they would...

For me the reason is: UI, mods and kits. The BG1 enemies are as dumb as planks, and I just can't play without the "smarter general AI" bits of SCS1 (requires either Tutu or BGT). Also, UI-wise, don't underestimate the usefulness of Tab "lighting up" all containers.

I've also been checking on this.  I've got a number of different mod set-ups on my computer.  None of these have needed a disc because I added MagicDisc to my computer some time ago to use virtual discs after a previous DVD reader died of overuse.  However, after getting rid of that for the moment I can confirm that there is no problem with BGT running on the GOG version.  The following collection of mods (my current set-up, which includes pretty much all the mods referred to by BelgarathMTH) runs happily:
CharmPatch
BG2 Fixpack
BGT
BG1 Mini-quests and encounters
BG1 NPC Project
Gavin
BG1 UB
Gavin BG2
BG2 UB
SCS
Solaufein
G3 anniversary
BGT Tweak Pack
Turambar Fixes and Tweaks
SCS II (also shown in BWP order after Worldmap)
BG2 Tweak Pack
Item Pack
aTweaks
BLCR - BG1 cap reinstate
Worldmap
L1 NPCs
Widescreen Mod
Generalised Biffing

However, adding in Dark Horizons, DSOTSC, NTOTSC and Bonehill it no longer works - the ToB Extender complains that is does not have access to a file required by DSOTSC.  I think that's quite an old mod in origin, which may be why there's a problem with the way it uses ToB extender, though I know nothing about modding.

The only difference I've noticed in running GOG is that the game seems to run fractionally faster to me (that's a good thing for me because I always want to play as fast as possible and use the space bar as necessary).

In many ways I think BG1 is a better game - at least it was closer to the PnP experience I remember from many years ago.  However, the interface becomes annoying if you go back to it after using BG2 and mods.  Issues for me include the very small screen display, the inability to pause while in inventory and the small stack sizes.  Therefore I'm not likely to give up BGT now.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that not being able to go to inventory during combat business.

However, as far as item stacks, BG Tweaks comes in a version that is designed for BG1 without BGT or Tutu.

There's no relation between BioWare and GoG nor with the game editions being sold there so I don't see the issue.

If your version of the game doesn't need a disc in the drive to play eg. GoG then that's fines... Tutu deliberately does NOT touch the disc required exe because removing/ adding it could be construed as breeching copy-wrights.
Shop around!
I have the 4disc set & the GoG on my system because the 4set has issues with ubuntu but they both run fine on my win xp partition.
