I'm running DAO ultimate edition on windows vista sp2 64 bit, 4gb of ram on pc, nvidia 8600GT graphics card.
I've been able to run DAO but it has recently been crashing whenever I am at redcliffe or at the mage tower. It would tell me DAO has stopped working every 5 minutes of playtime. I tried downgrading my drivers to version 270.61 but then when I start the game it tells me that it could not detect a supported video card. I really enjoy this game but It's completely unplayable because of the crashing.
Please help!

The 8600 is way too old for even the 270.33 driver. But let's start with a proper problem report, as in Raen's pinned Sticky post about reporting.

A pinned message, also called a "sticky" sits at the top of the index page where it can help the new members here. RaenImrahl's post starts with the words "Read First".

I'm running a 8600 GTS with 256 MB and 6 GB of memory on a Windows 7 64 bit and do not have any problems. I'll get you the driver version I'm using when I get home.

DAO doesn't work well with several of the newest beta drivers from Nvidia. There is a thread pinned to the top of the DA2 PC tech forum about this.

Finally. I'm running a GeForce 8600 GTS driver version 270.61. Please note I am running Windows 7 64 bit not Vista. Results may vary and please be prepared to roll back your drivers whenever you try new ones. I also have 6 GB of Ram which may be part of the reason I don't have many crashes at all.
P.S. Hmm, just realized you already tried 270.61 sorry. Works for me though. I get mine from EVGA, but I'm sure that they are just standard NVIDIA drivers because I get the NVIDIA control panel. Also, EVGA installers completely remove the old drivers before installing the new ones. You can try that if you haven't already.
Lastly, have you tried upgrading your DirectX?

Went back to play DAO after a while away, game loads fine, but the text menus and all in game sounds are no longer running. The menu has turned invisible, its still there when the mouse rolls over it but there is no text. Help

There are beaucoup threads about how to fix invisible menus, and Google works great, even if the on-site Finder here in the forums does not.
