If you leave Anders in Vigil's Keep and defend Amaranthine, you can get an Epilogue card telling that Anders died.
However, I understand (haven't played it yet) that Anders is a major character in DA2. How is that resolved if you import an "Anders dead" save?
AWAKENING: Question about Anders' end in DA:A and import to DA2. (Spoiler!)

It's handwaved by saying that a) you didn't see Anders die,
the epilogue cards are mostly to be taken as rumour, and/or c) ... well, © may be a bit spoilery for DA2 if you want to avoid those.

You would be surprised that he is not the only person that can die in DA and appear in DA2

They cover it with some extra dialogue from another familiar companion - won't say any more as I don't want to spoil the surprise for you.

All of the Awakening epilogue cards are pretty much flotsam to be swept aside as they relate to DAII. They should have just left them out completely, aside from the Warden's, which amazingly is still canon with the current plot.

Thank you all for the spoiler-free information. Regarding the Warden slide, you can't be more canon than "After a while doing this or that, he went away to do something else. Or maybe not."
