As far as I remember, I got every upgrade for Vigil's keep. I definitely got the "Enduring Vigil" achievement.

Yet, when I left Oghren, Velanna, Sigrun (and Varel) at Vigil's Keep, all except Oghren died defending the Keep, which "held a week against the Darkspawn".

Is that normal?

Oghren should still be alive, although passing out from blood loss, if I understand you.
Of course, the codex says everyone died, so I presume you're basing this on the epilogue.

the only ones who survive being left behind are anders, nathaniel, oghren and justice (the epilogue says he died but da2 ignores that)

OK, thank you. I was thinking I did something wrong with the Keep, but apparently everything is as it should be...

AFAIK, Anders dies too. "With an arrow through his neck, and surrounded by hundreds of Darkspawn corpses who all died of magic" or something like that. Despite DA2, of course.

He can live if left to defend the keep if you have enough upgrades apparently

FYI, if Nathaniel is left at the keep he'll quit the Wardens after the battle. Also, even if you got Enduring Vigil and the epilogue says they lived a bug makes the game record them as having died. This will impact some quests in DA2 if you import to there.

Lastly there's some ambiguity in Sigrun's epilogue if left at the Vigil. Although it can be assumed she died, it doesn't actually come out and say that.

That's Velanna, whose body disappears after a wall collapses on her. Concerning Sigrun, "Once again, she and a legion faced the Darkspawn with no hope of survival. This time she did not run." That's unambiguous to me. The Epilogue would have mentioned if she had still survived certain death. See Occam's razor.

"Technically" the epilogue just says that Sigrun didn't run. It doesn't spell out death, even though that's what is implied. The same can be said of Varel if you save Amaranthine instead of the keep.

Since Sigrun doesn't appear in DA2, her fate doesn't really matter. If she somehow survived the attack on the keep, she would have died in the deep roads. She's determined to die fighting darkspawn one way or another, as part of her oath to the legion.

It's a shame, as I liked Sigrun and it's too bad that she felt that she needed to join the legion.  I would have rather seen Velanna burn at the stake than lose Sigrun.

Tsk, tsk... (although I don't care about Velanna much myself)

Well, she wouldn't be really Sigrun if she wasn't a legionnaire. There are of couse parallels with the French Foreign Legion, which also accepts "social outcasts" and gives them a chance for glory (and early death). Her character is interesting because of the contrast between the gloomy prospect of a "dead" legionnaire and her "perky" character...

On a different note, from the dialogues in Awakening it seems to me that the whole Legion of the Dead was killed at Kal'Hirol, not just "her unit", as the Dragonage Wiki tells us... (she says something like "The Legion went to Kal'Hirol", and her initial quest is calles "Last of the Legion"),   that's a harsh decision by the writers, don't you think?

The Legion probably gets wiped out fairly frequently.

I'd imagine that this isn't the same Legion as the one in the Dead Trenches. They can't be everywhere at once.

I suppose Sigrun wouldn't be "Sigrun" if she wasn't in the Legion. It just feels kind of tragic for such a likeable character to be destined to be a corpse in the deep roads, if the darkspawn didn't make her into a broodmother. Somehow, I wanted my warden to be her "Prince Charming" and save her from her fate and live happily ever after. At least, if you bring Sigrun to slay the mother, she'll keep finding reasons to delay her calling.

Maybe they travel a lot... :?

I think Sigrun has run away once and is determined to (and will) "make up" for it in the end... it's really a pity Awakening leaves so little room for character development.

(on the other hand, every Grey Warden gets the Calling in the end... and Sigrun is a Warden too now...

Same thing when you spare Loghain and Alistair tells you he isn't a Warden any more... I always think "Sure you are... just wait...")

Yes, with the taint, "You can run, but you can never hide". You can have a conversation with Anders in Awakening about wardens who leave the order.

That part with Alistair didn't make much sense. Warden or not, you remain tainted.
