Why did the alliance navy mass over Europe?

It doesn't make much sense, when they fought sovereign they knew how many ships they lost just killing one reaper. so why mass almost there entire armada of ships which are built for more of a direct combat over europe where they could become easy prey for the reaper war ships?

it doesn't make much sense though, if they knew the attack was coming wouldn't it make more sense to ambush the reapers rather than be on the defense.dewayne31 wrote...
i don't think it was just alliance. i think a combination of alliance and earths various military forces

Because the commander in charge was an idiot. They should have met them right at the relay.
I thought that Reapers would come directly to Earth, not use relay and besides if theyd come through Arcturus relay(Arcturus Station would warn Earth for incoming attack),then the Earth would be a little bit more mobilized for Reaper attack.

Which makes me worry for all those brave souls at the Arcturus Station... Cause if the Reapers came that way, and Earth didn't recieve a warning it can only mean one thing...

Only hackett and Andersson know the ships heading for earth are reapers. The rest of the alliance is in denial like our good friends on the council. So since the ships attacking are actually geth or batarians in the eyes of the alliance, they rally to meet them head on before they hit humanity's most important planet.

I feel equally bad about all those marines losing their lives in the battle over earth in which they didn't even stand a chance...

The fleet was in orbit over Earth and when the Reapers came Earth just happened to rotate into a position where it would appear that they were stationed over Europe. Hell the fleet couldn't even be in Atmosphere since we all know how large warships can't operate in atmosphere.

Yes, because clearly they need to be over North America, the center of the Universe.
NOT
Europe is the center of the world, has been since the Greeks invented Democracy.
Makes sense.

Because it was that time of the day?
Earth (and many other planets) actually rotate around their axes.

Pearl Harbor was a similar situation one could argue... a naval yard, crammed with ships... and were nowhere near at anything resembling a competent ready status when the japanese launched their surprise attack... pretty stupid leaving so many vital ships in that situation without adequate defence - even if they weren't at war, it was the height of stupidity not to be prepared for such an occurence (especialy with a war raging across the rest of the world).
Could just be Earth had another idiot leader(s) managing the fleets... figuring "meh, nobody's dumb enough to surprise attack us here, right? I mean it's never happened in our species history before, right?"

Because it's Europe, and aliens never attack Europe. Haven't you seen Independence Day? Or War of the Worlds? Or any other generic movie about alien attacks? Do they ever feature an attack on Europe? No, they never do.

Since World War II we only had one genocide, and that was somewhere in the Balkan. They're all assasins anyway and they're all called Niko.Hathur wrote...
