Just face it, europe is much more fun to invade, atleast we have experience with being invaded, so we know how to welcome a invading army. (not to mention that europe is a much more attractive piece of land to take then the other continents.).

Ehhh define attractive.

Much more nature in any other continent.

It is hard to say what their particular reasoning behind massing over Europe is, other than the fact that they had to mass above somewhere. If they scattered their fleets, that is far more likely to result in the complete destruction of your forces and an inability to expel an incursion than keeping all your ships within range of covering each other.

Tactically, this is called 'mass', and it is a key factor in deciding who will win a battle. Even if the Reapers initially made contact above Australia or China, the fleet would move, as a whole, to bring its full firepower on the enemy at once, as opposed to loosing all of your battle-groups individually as they move independently to counter the threats. This fleet is most likely at some form of battle readiness as well, and not just siting in dry-dock, so to speak.

The fact that the Reaper fleet is so powerful that there was no defense that could have reasonably stopped them does not make the attempted defense tactically stupid or imply that the commander was an idiot. It only implies that the commander was sorely lacking in intel regarding the threat they were facing, or that they were desperate to protect our home-world, either of which are understandable courses of action.

Actually....

The Alliance doctrine of space warfare, as explained in the codex, is one that makes you wonder if the fleet massed over earth at all.

According to the codex, the alliance makes up for its lesser numbers in fleet compared to other races by abandoning the hope of being able to defend everything. They got token defence forces stationed more to be able to warn about impeeding invasions than actually prevent such. The doctrine then calls for the total fleet to pinpoint hit strategic targets or battles, in order to be able to make up for lack of strength. The alliance fleet is thought to be 'highly mobile' in this regard.

If anything, I'd see Alliance accepting Earth as a lost cause and attempt to make it a honeytrap instead, retreating any ships they have to Arcturus or another gathering point before they can rendevouz with outside forces for a proper 'pinpoint attack', instead of wasting themselves on a fruitless endeavour.

Residents of Earth itself, however, might be of quite a different viewpoint in this regard, though, and more inclined to try an ultimately hopeless struggle. Both because they prob can't get away in time due to short warning and alliance keeping a lid on things in order to prevent panic at 'closure time', and because according to shepard that's just what humans do ;) (fight against hopeless odds)

I can fully understand a token fleet from earth nations trying what they can, but I would expect the alliance to follow their own doctrine and call earth a lost cause before submitting any forces to that battle they didn't have to (ie. some of their ships might not have gotten the word fast enough that they got a charlie foxtrot at earth and need to get the heck out and therefore get caught in the area when the reapers arrive)

Meh, I'd say the fleet really did.

When facing the Reapers, you might as well defend what you can. They'll get you eventually.

It doesn't make much sense, when they fought sovereign they knew how many ships they lost just killing one reaper. so why mass almost there entire armada of ships which are built for more of a direct combat over europe where they could become easy prey for the reaper war ships?

Yes, because clearly they need to be over North America, the center of the Universe.

NOT

Europe is the center of the world, has been since the Greeks invented Democracy.

Makes sense.

I knew this response was coming. Nobody gives proper respect to Africa for inventing the thumb, try 'inventing' democracy without that. I thought Greece was in the Mediterranean anyway?

Mediterraneo is a sea...that little sea between Europa in which  Greece is located and the North of Africa...:innocent:

I don't find it that strange to be over Europe. I though it would be over Canada, since Bioware is in there   but whether we like it or not Europe has been very important to shape the world.

The history of North and South America, Australia, and Europe of the last 500 years is the history of the Europeans, whether people like it or not. Africa is very influenced in its current situation due to the colonial and imperialism of Europeans, for good and mainly for the bad. The Indian subcontinent  was influenced due to the British colonialism. The Forbidden Palace of China was taken by French and Brittish. The Namba commerce with the Portuguese revolutioned the Sengoku war in Japan with the new muskets. And I won't say that from México to Argentina, Spanish is spoken along with Portuguese in Brasil...and English in USA and Canada (with French).

So, why  not over Europe? and unless the ships are in Geostationary orbit, the world will rotate and they will not be over Europe in a few hours, that's so, if they are not wiped out within a few minutes :)

I know this is very Europecentric, but not always the world rotates only around the USA. It would be cool that it were over Indonesia-India-China since its the most populated area of the world.

Which is especially annoying when you're not a european, since it pretty much assures you'll be descended from a victim of the europeans. So lets not go down that road.

Europe is safe. Alliance knows this.

WWI and WWII on the phone, they'd like to have a word with you

Since World War II we only had one genocide, and that was somewhere in the Balkan. They're all assasins anyway and they're all called Niko.

West Europe is safe. Alliance knows this.

And about Niko, that was a joke.

For someone from Europe you sure do seem like the average narrow-minded american. And this is not referening to your poor attempt at making a gta joke.

I've come no further than Croatia (which was by the way an awesome country, except for driving near Split... bad memories) and the only thing I know about Bulgaria and Romania are their high score on the corruption index and that a fair share of Eastern Europeans are nationalist pricks - If you have to believe some Poles, they argue that Polish parachustists have liberated half of Europe, running around naked with a stick -. Now, the fact that you fail to conceive the real joke proves that Dutch humour isn't really translating itself that well to English.

But, I'm very likely narrow minded,  so we're on par there.

I was commenting on the historical point you were making. Maybe you were being ironic. Hard to get sarcasm on the internet sometimes. As for corruption, there is corruption in every single country and underground affairs going on. Money makes the world move around. I was brought up nationalistic and rightfully so - a person who doesn't respect their country and where he/she came from is worth nothing.

Nice to see you have such an open mind about americans.

I've lived in US for 4 years and one of my best friends is an american. Don't presume to judge too quick. My words were chosen - I said the average american. And yes the average american is incredibly narrow-minded and with extremely little knowledge about the world around him.

Unfortunately the amount of people who believed me that I never saw clothes, cars, phones and I live in cave and eat bats while hunting on a horse was far unprecendented then I originally anticipated. Fortunately there are people who I met who vindicated the amount of stupidity I had to endure at some points.

Everyone's a victim of something. Grow up. Powers rise and fall as all empires do. Religion, ideology, resources, land, spite, love or just because... No matter how pathetic the reason, it's enough to start war. War will never cease to exist, reasons can be thought up after the fact. Human nature pursues strife.

Everyone has skeletons in the closet, every single country on the planet.  If you want to chuck around the blame, almost every European on these forums can just chuck it right back.  Quite honestly the kind of nationalistic and xenophobic crap which is flying round on this thread is exactly how actual wars are started

I'm judging you more harshly now.  If you lived in a place for 4 years you should have been able to figure out in that time that poeple are people.  Being an American doesn't make you any more narrow minded than anyone else in the world.  You might want to open your eyes and pay attention to how narrow minded the poeple in your neck of the woods are, chances are they are just as bad as the Americans you want to insult.  But the problem is they are probably narrow minded in the same way that you are, so you are just oblivios to it.  Narrow minded never seems to look narrow minded when you agree with them.

They should of massed the fleet over Yemen, I predict that place will still be a wartorn hellhole in the future. And the Reapers might think it's worth something so it would buy the better parts of the world a few more hours.

Reapers came to europe because we have the most diverse and best beer in the world, not that ****** that passes for beer all over the place.

Have a Westvleteren, Chimay or any other monk brewed beer and you'll know why harby wants some.
Lay off the industrial BS, which is equavelant to ****** aswell.

It gives me the creeps, really. You want to know why the fleet is concentrated on Europe? Because the stupid planet earth rotates. End of the story. It freaks me out to see stupid comments of why my country is the best, why my continent is better. If it is better on any reason it is not because of you or any of the listed characteristics. :D
