I know that the choices you make regarding Paragon and Renegade can have direct results on the side quests (i.e., you can avoid fights altogether, get things you want easier, etc.) but does it have any branching effect on the main plot?  Is there anything similar to the effects in side quests than can happen in the main narrative or is the campaign pretty tightly tailored?  The real grit of the question is: does BEING Paragon/Renegade have any effect on the main story or are all main story avenues open to the player regardless of past choices?

I don't think so (if I understand what you mean at least).  You still face the same "storyline" missions.

The choices do have effects on what happens in individual missions and in the story but not on which main missions you'll be doing (at least so far).  For example, there are many ways the Suicide Mission can go but there's not an alternative Suicide Mission.

Yeah, with the Paragon choice you don't lose as many people, get to meet more people, and have more positive validation for your choices than the Renegade ones...  (Renegade choices are generally not validated much in the game)

That said, the mission gets done regardless of which path you take.

Oh, you know it's pretty validating to kill off Tali by giving up the evidence.

By validation I mean showing an upside to the choice, lol. In other words, the game doesn't do much to make a choice other than the Paragon one seem valid. Even if a Renegade choice is the "wrong" one, there's no content to experience that explores that... there's just nothing there.

P.S.  I never give the evidence against Tali, I always leave that choice up to her.Posted Image

Having a higher Paragon/Renegade score then the opposite bar changes the ending of ME1 dramatically.

Council alive

Paragon - Humanity (Shepard) are cliche heroes

Renegade - Ruthless recognition of Humanity by the Council

Council dead

Paragon - Alien Council with a Human chairman as head (Udina or Anderson).

Renegade - Exclusive Human Council (my favorite)

*The human exclusive ending had very hefty repercussions for me in ME2.

Furthermore, by halfway through the game (ME1), depending on your Paragon/Renegade score, you'll have access to two exclusive missions.

Paragon 75% - Hostage rescue

Renegade 75% - Negotiations with a Terminus criminal

Non-loyal doesn't necessarily = auto death at the suicide mission, since I hand it over in my canon and she survives.
