I've been thinking about it for a while, and I really think an FPS based around the First Contact War could be an awesome addition to the Mass Effect franchise.

It could especially work well with the Modern Warfare game model. Not to copy them or anything, but wouldn't it be awesome to have an FPS set in the ME universe, where you play several different characters experiencing first contact with an alien race? The roles could be a Colonial Marine who becomes a war icon, a scientist trying to figure out how to defeat the Turians and a Cerberus Agent, the Alliance's new "black ops" division, tasked with trying to bring the war to an end by any means neccessary.

It could start out with a prologue; you play a colonist on Mars, about to start his day and getting told that his team will excavate sector 42G that day. In a vehicle section, you fly or drive a Mako (ha ha) to the site and uncover the Prothean Ruins. You explore them, and discover mass effect.

After an introduction, could be in the form of a CNN broadcast, that explains the next few years of studying the ruins, building some new ships, and finally humanities discovery of the mass relays, the expansion of colonies, and the upcoming mission to open Relay 314. You then take the role of a lead scientist approaching and boarding the Mass Relay for the first time. It could be a really creepy Dead Space vibe, walking through pitch black corridors, illuminated by small blue lights etc. and... then nothing.

Your team reaches the central command hub and using the deciphered Prothean hyroglyphs (or something) from Mars, the Relay is activated. Moments later several turian crusiers pull through and obliterate the science team's ships, this could be the first actual shooting part of the game. Armed with a handgun, you need to get back to your docked shuttle and send a distress signal to Alliance HQ. You fight your way through and just before you can send the signal you are taken prisoner. Fortunately one small ship escapes to warn the Alliance.

Cut to the Alliance announcing First Contact... and they are hostile. You then take on the role of a young potential marine, Tadius Ahern, through boot camp (you know, the usual FPS fare) and eventually sent to recover a data module with tons of info on Earth that is lost in Turian space. As soon as you arrive on the planet where the module is however, the Turians attack and you're forced to fight for survival. You manage to push the ground forces back and recover the module, while holding off them off until evac arrives.

You're awarded a medal of honor and become a war hero. After you're given your medal you switch to another character;  a newly appointed Cerberus Agent, and told that using covert tactics, your mission is to stop the war before it becomes something bigger. I dunno how this is accomplished, maybe you sneak aboard a turian cruiser and sabotage it, get info or something, I dont know. Maybe you get info that they are planning to attack Shanxi.

Back as Tadius, you are given charge of a squad and sent to Shanxi to stop the invasion. On the way there your ships are attacked and a massive space battle ensues. Several ships are destroyed and you lose some friends etc but the Turians are all destroyed in a tense close quarters engagement.

Back as the Cerberus Agent, you are told that the Turians have a human scientist hostage, and you need to go and free him. A bit less covert, and more full on assault, you board the ship and with your team, you make your way to the holding cells...

Perhaps as the Scientist from the start of the game, you are interrogated by some Turians and this is where you are given the voice-recognition module and can then converse with them. They tell you that humans are violating Council Law etc etc but before you can arrange negotiations, the ship is attacked and boarded by Alliance Forces and the Scientist is freed during an intense rescue mission.

As Tadius you arrive on Shanxi just as the Turians arrive in orbit, they send down shuttles of ground forces and you're involved in a huge ruined city battle. After a long fight, the Turians pull back and seemingly leave... until you realise they are preparing to bomb the planet from orbit.

As the Scientist you tell the Cerberus Agent that this whole thing is a misunderstanding and the two of you race to get word to Alliance HQ. You hear about Shanxi and the Cerberus Agent sneaks onto the planet. There, you fight through the Turian remnants and reach General Williams. He agrees to surrender the planet to give the humans left a chance. As the Scientist you return to Arcturus Station and plead your case. Unfortunately the admirals dont believe you and throw you in the brig. Admiral Drescher gathers a large force and heads to Shanxi to begin the war.

As it's all about to blow up into full on galactic war, when all seems lost, the Council intervenes and war is averted.

Could be cool.

Disagree. The visuals of the main character in the world's context is a big part of making Mass Effect cinematic for me.

FPS is a drity word. Mass Effect in first person is like thinking about your parents having sex.

Yeah, that's not how the FCW went at all... and also the war didn't happen well until humanity had successfully colonized Shanxi. And I am sure the game would disappoint RPG fans, and would also disappoint FPS fans as a sub par shooter, and would be an obvious attempt to milk ME fans for more money.

No, FPSs are for idiots! Mass Effect has to be as complex as possible so that those dirty console-playing peasants don't ruing it for the glorious PC-gaming master race! </sarcasm>

Seriously though, I'd play that.

I don't really want a story where I know how it is going to end. And in this case in a somewhat anti-climatic way. It's possible it could work, but I would rather they did something else.

I'm not entirely fond of your layout of the game but a game set in First Contact would be awesome. I'd rather it be a 3rd person still though. I think Citadel Noire should be the next Mass Effect game though...

Except there was nothing glorious / epic about the first contact war.

- Turians found the humans intruding on disputed space... attacked, crushed them with ease.

- Alliance said "Frack that!" retaliated with a Fleet from Sol, kicked the snot out of the Turians and sent them running for reinforcements / help.

- Council steps in before Turians can counter attack and says "You children, behave yourselves!"

Was an uneven, short fight both times... hardly grand or epic stuff to base a game on... besides we all know the outcome anyway.

The first contact war was frankly just a footnote in history... had the council not intervened and allowed the Turians & humans to slug it out, then perhaps it would be something more interesting.

Though I would find it very hard if not impossible to enjoy playing a game as humanity where we have to fight Turians the whole game.... they are not a "bogey-man" species - they're a likeable species for the most part and the first contact war was as much humanity's fault as the Turians..... can't say I'd find much fun in stomping Turians in a game over what was basically a combination of arrogance and misunderstanding.

Pick something worse, like the rachni wars or the krogan rebellion instead.

Would rather see the Rachni Wars + Krogan rebellions, then we could be free of "human ethics"

Why should it be an FPS. Couldn't there be just as much potential in an TPS/RPG highbrid ( ala ME1, ME2 and ME3 ) based on the first contact wars.

Why is the FCW so popular on these forums? It was a relatively brief engagement, and was interrupted by the Citadel before anything significant could occur.

I would much rather have an original Mass Effect TPS over a glorified detailing of a small lore-based skirmish.

I was never a big fan of FPS games. I tried ones like BioWare and the Metroid Prime series, but I couldn't get into them. TPS games was the alternative. I'd like to see who I'm playing in the game to get an idea of where I am in the game. The only time I can play a FPS is in a CO-OP campaign. So I highly doubt I'd play a Mass Effect FPS let along an ME MMO.

Don't get the FPS hate. I rarely play them myself, but how in the world they would be bad for ME universe? Don't people want this universe to expand and grow? Didn't anyone play Star Wars: Republic Commando? Not every game in ME has to be an RPG. Part of the appeal of Star Wars games is that they're of many different genres. Flight simulators, RPGs, action adventure games, first person shooters, RTS games. Where's the problem here?

If Bioware want to make FPS in Mass Effect universe that's they business.

I my self has no interest at all anything FPS related games. But that doesn't mean other players aren't interested. So, good luck with FPS.

My personal problem with FPS is the FP perspective, not the shooter side.

Halo, GOW, Resistance. The point of your request? Star Wars IP has succesful shooter titles like Battlefront series or Republic Commando. Where's the problem? There are already side comics, side books and side games (Galaxy) in ME franchise, why can't there be side shooters that would expand the universe?

I agree. I like RPGs just as much as anyone else, but an FPS can tell an amazing story too.

Not a fan of prequels, though. And Relay 314 Incident was just a small border skirmish.

The First Contact War wasn't such a large conflict. Turians don't even cite it as a war, for them it is referred to as the 314 Relay Incident. The whole thing was just a misunderstanding between a newcomer race and a more experienced one. Human groups such as Terra Firma make the whole conflict seem larger and more important than it really is.
