Not bothering to read previous posts...too lazy.
Anyway the game doesn't just provide us with insane mages. It provides us with some insane mages, but it also provides us with regular mages. There's Ella, the Circle mage you save from Alrik (and Anders hopefully). She broke out of the Circle, yes, but if I remember right she just did it to go see her sick and/or dying mother.
There's also Emile De Launcet. He also escapes from the Circle, but rather then going on a bloodmagic fueled killing spree, he simply goes to the Hanged Man to drink and try to pick up chicks. He may be a twit, but he's not insane. There's also Feynriel. He wants to learn to control his magic and doesn't do anything insane to accomplish that. That's not even bringing up Bethany, who I sometimes regard as the only sane one in the whole motley bunch or your companions.
There are mages who are insane, true. There the ones that try and kill you.
Doesn't making all the mages insane make the mage debate pointless?

Faulty writing. They want to make us feel like there is no black and white issue, that the mage templar conflict is placed in the moral grey area. But then they **** the player by making it so nothing he or she does would make a difference. In the end the mages are bat**** crazy, the templars are zealots.
You cant talk about how morallity isn't black and white, and then just create a set of one dimensional characters that portray the issue in as black and white as possible. Even the mages and templars that started to work together were written as complete mindless zealots.
The best villian is the one you can reason with, agree with even. Someone like the Arishok who makes sense as a villian. Hopefully the 3rd game picks up on some proper themes and works them out decently. We don't need more awesome button, we need plot, characterization, drama, comedy and clever writing.
