In all the backgrounds it says that Shepard enlisted in the Alliance at age 18, even in the Spacer background where his/her parents were both Navy officers, and had the same DI as Ashley Williams. I always found the idea of a Private Shepard strange, but it would give a chance for Bioware to explain some of Shepards abilities since (at least in the United States military) officers cannot go get medical training, and that career field is limited to enlisted personnel, even in the SOCOM community. Bioware could use it to explain why a Navy officer such as Shepard is apparently the only person in the galaxy capable of using medkits.

I know I'm picking at straws here, but the idea of a Private Shepard having to work through the ranks seems like the perfect opportunity to give the character some much needed development that isn't limited to his/her background.

I JUST WANT MY SHEPARD TO SHOOT THINGS and BLOW THINGS UP!!!

Why do you guys nitpick on the silliest things. Do you guys really, I mean, really care why he can use medikits? or do you care more about how many medikits he can you use?

Ask yourself these questions.

The first paragraph just seems like nitpicking disguised as a request. I do approve of character development though, but I don't know how they could fit this into ME3 without it feeling like a pointless sidetrack. It would make for a great dlc.

Just curious:
My Shep was a War Hero background in ME1, and I could have sworn that the codex entry for "War Hero" implied that Shep was on shoreleave and rallied the civilians to hold off Batarian slavers until the Alliance came.  But in ME2, the "War Hero" description sounded like Shep was commanding a small military squad that saw action against Batarian slavers.

Did that disconnect only happen with the Spacer background?  Or did other folks get it too?  Posted Image

You're not the only person who cares Oblivion.

It's possible his parents encouraged him to enlist rather than go to college/a military academy. Some people feel that officers with enlisted experience make for better leaders, since they have a better understanding of all the bull**** enlisted people go through.

Since Shepard is an O-4, he went to OCS after a few years as an enlisted man.
