Thus I find it incredibly weird that she suddenly becomes obsessed with Shepard after his death and works with terrorists to bring him back. Then she turns her obsession towards a man who betrayed her, going so far as to pursue a vendetta for two years and completely give up her chosen profession.
Liara went from archeologist to commando to information broker to commando AND information broker.
It's just silly.
She is the worst written character in the series. The Liara we meet in ME2 has nothing in common with the original except for the name and voice actor. Even her face is different after LOTSB.
Liara just isn't believable as someone who is threatening or kickass. She looks ridiculous.

I can't take Liara seriously because she is just so out of her element and out of character all together. In ME2 she was a logical-minded and stable voice on the crew. One of the most stable. She clearly wanted Shepard, but if she was turned down she took it well and kept things professional. Even when she had to kill her own mother she stayed professional and focused, she didn't freak out.

She was always a weirdly handled character. The first game doesn't give any good reason to justify her becoming a squadmate at all. She's like a JRPG character who's part of the squad "just because".

Miranda as the blatant sex symbol 2. I bought the DLC with alternative costume just for the combat armor. Otherwise, she's such a standard tsundere that the only way I'd see her character as 'interesting' will be if it turns out she's been leading Shepard this whole time and is still a Cerberus loyalist.
That would be so cool!
I agree wholeheartedly that Thane tried to be the poster boy for badass. It's too much. On the other hand, Morinth and Grunt are too basic. The absolutely carnal and amoral succubus, and the deep voiced hulk of undiluted "awesome" that wants only to smash rage kill.

- protection
- her biotic abilities
- her relation to Benezia
- her knowledge about Protheans
The game gives you more than enough reasons...

Those are reasons to keep her on the ship. Only one of those is a reason to keep her on a fire team... but you already have one guaranteed biotic (Kaiden), another one as well (Wrex), and that's ignoring Shepard.Barquiel wrote...

And those two actualy have significant combat experience to back up their presence on the team. Kaiden is a distinguished soldier: Wrex has seen more time in combat than most of the team's ages combined. Liara has... maybe a decade as an archeologist.

I can't say that there is a specific character I can't take seriously.
However, I have romanced Miranda once or twice in my many play through, and always kinda regret it during the scene after the Collectors abduct the crew. The way she just snaps at Joker when he really was not in any position to help, and had no idea how the situation could have been avoided, just really irks me. To be honest, the scene makes me kind of wish there was an option for Shepard to say something along the lines of, "Miranda, if I had to choose between you and Joker over who is valuable to me and this crew, you would be heading out the airlock."
In this case I would put it up to self hate projecting onto someone else... and in reality yes he did it without the chain of command but, I have and always will support Joker in his decision to do so.
Because in reality she probably wasn't "required" to go along with Shep but went anyway. And if anything should be more angry at Shep than Joker. But people will snap at people below them than they will above them.
Is it right.. no but it happens anyway.
For me the Council, they say they have full confendnce in the spectures but turn around and doesn't believe Shep. He talks about the holo Vigl. Did they even try restoring power, or are the invigation teams and council members already indoctrinated. Because it was sensitive to the indoctrination. So maybe even an overseer would cause it not to activate.
Also the whole scenario of Arrival seems alittle far feached... So Harbeger was able to get enough of a grip to stop them from doing it but not enough to force them to disable it prementaly.
THe only other is Kelly... don't get me wrong... honestly I think it was more of a Diana Troy sort of thing.
Her reaction was more shock than hate. Would you say this if Shepard said it? It's no different than the guy after the Collectors take off with the colonists, He thinks it's my fault, I let it happen. ("I did what I could I'm sorry!") However, neither his nor Miranda's was inappropriate. Miranda's tone may have pissed you off, but what she said shouldn'tve. (As Renegade Shepard said: "There's no need to place blame!")
You and Nightdragon8 have valid points. I didn't intend for my post to suggest I didn't understand why she reacted the way she did. It is totally understandable. I agree that her tone was the main factor that set me off. You could probably compare it to a situation where someone you've known for only a short time blames a really good friend of yours for something. While you may like this person, you can't help but feel defensive for your close friend. Especially when they did the best they could considering their limitations
Like I said, there isn't a character I can say I don't take seriously at all. And I do like Miranda. I just wanted to share an instance where her character bothered me. I apologize if I didn't explain it well.
How long is a "short while"? Two years? (You know where this is headed lol)
No, I understood it. It's just the idea that while Miranda all but said: "You idiot!" (albeit her tone not helping, but even that was reasonable); yet, Jack and the VSs are cleared to go OTT when they just could have said: "You idiot!" or some other colorful iteration!

Yeah, there's no indicator that she has much combat experience or any combat training beyond basic self-defense. When we first see her she's just some archeologist trapped in a biotic field who later doesn't even lift a finger to battle that Krogan battlemaster and his Geth.
At least with Tali (another with an iffy justification for being on a fire team) we get to see her throw a grenade that kills somebody and shoot at others.

-Garrus: he's cool, my favourite
-Wrex: cool too, 2nd bro.
-Kaidan: i don't know much about him, i ran the 1st game with Garrus+Wrex combo. Every single time.
-Ashley: didn't like her at all. i know a girl in real life who's exacly like her, except with blond hair. couldn't take her seriously. and when he killed my bro wrex on my 1st playthrough, i loaded back, saved wrex, and sent her to die. worst ME char IMO.
-Liara: in the 1st game, she was like "meh" but In the Shadow Broker DLC she was really cool, loved her.
-Tali: the only interesting thing about her is what's under her mask. apart from that,, really boring. an innocent engineer girl. why do we keep her on the ship? let her go home to examine geth or something. Not a serious char.
-Jacob: he's not that interesting, but a honest, decent guy, who you can count on. Liked him, his personality was fine.
-Miranda: the long black hair + blue eyes are my type. but i couldn't stand her. such a boring/annoying char. also too much tied to cerberus. DISLIKE.
-Zaeed: one badass mercenary. replaced Wrex in ME2 for me. he's my favourite human in the game. pure awesomeness. also loved his stories.
-Kasumi: she was alright. loved her personal quest and background story. still, didn't take her on any single quest apart from her personal one. she's a thief afterall, and i'm going to hardcore combat. Not serious enough, but still, a good char.
-Samara: loved her.
-Morinth: loved her too. such a hard choice it was
-Legion: we didn't have much time together, but i felt him a bit forced. the typical "enemies become friends in the sequel". not serious enough.
-Mordin: really good char.
-Grunt: if we didn't have Wrex, Grunt would be awesome. but since we had, he's only B category.
-Thane: liked him, his background was really interesting too, especially the sickness part.
-Jack: dunno. she was ok, nothing special.
so TL;DR/conclusion: Ashley, Miranda, Tali.
i must add that i didn't really go into the romances. i had to save the galaxy, i didn't have time for love.

She's spent a decent ammount of time just floating in her bubble...without food and water. What do you expect?
We know from one of the novels that Singularity is among the most advanced of all biotic techniques....and Liara is the only squadmate who can form a singularity. I think it's safe to assume Benezia trained her extensively.

That may be so, but needing supplementary information outside the primary source of the narrative is pretty poor. Singularity being an advanced ability should be stated in game if it wasn't already.
I had no intention of reading the comics and there was pertinent information as to how Shepard ended up where he/she was. That shouldn't happen. It's like trying to put a table together and the piece of paper that comes with the table shows you all that you should have in the box. Then the piece of paper tells you to go to a website to get information on how to put the table together when the item list and the directions could have been a neat bundle. The books should flesh out the universe, not my Shepard's story.

She says she has had combat training and has had to fight off mercs and wild animals. She spends most of her time alone out in unpatrolled space. I don't think it too odd that she can fight. In the case of the Krogan in the Prothean ruins, she may not have had the strength to properly utilized her biotics after being stuck in a bubble without food or drink for so long. Biotics require alot of calories. Also, she had no weapons or armor. One stray bullet in all that crossfire could have killed her.

Miranda.... mostly I think Bioware wanted her to be sort of the Fem-fatal of the group, but I just didn't quite buy it I guess. Also don't like Sentential characters, but that's just my preference.
I would have redone Thane a little bit. Him coming out and saying that he's dieing right at the opening was a little over the head. I would have put that in during his loyalty mission so it would be more a shock after you got to know him. I like Thane as a squad member, but I could put in Garus and another biotic and still have the same effect.
The mess sergeant... I forget his name. Garner I think. Again could have been more interesting side character, if he had more dialog.
All and all I think every character has it's place in the story (Except Jacob). Whether or not I like how it was developed or played is more on me and my play style.

Jacob started off like he was a Shepard fanboy and then it kinda seemed like he couldn't be bothered to speak to you. Like it was a chore to answer questions. He really seemed to just be there as filler. They just wanted a human male for the sake of having a human male. And maybe to give female players a human male LI.
The Shadow Broker's take on Jacob: "Ex-Alliance soldier. Biotic training. Despite solid service history, clearly placed on Shepard's team primarily for stabilizing elements of personality. "

You know who I can't take seriously? Everyone on this thread. You're ****ing about how unrealistic the characters in a VIDEO GAME are. I mean, come on? Why not stop being so judgemental, take a chill pill, relax, and enjoy Mass Effect? A few of you aren't even talking about characters you can't take seriously, @The Beerka is just stating why he thinks Miranda/Ashley/Tali are boring and useless (he's completely missed the point with all of them, but that's a matter for another day.)
I think you should take your own advice. =P
BTW, I explained this a couple pages back. ME is one of the only video games I give a crap about. Why? Immersion. When I'm playing, I'm IN the game. But, there are some unfortunate things that make me take a step back and realize that it is a video game. Among these, is poorly done characters.
And that's what this board is for, discussion of the game.

That was a really bad attempt to give purpose to the game's most pointless character.
He's so stabilizing, he pisses off other squadmates and is the worst conversationalist ever.
I'll give him this though: I did find him "believeable" overall.
