Femshep for because I am a female, and I love Hale's voice acting! When she makes speeches she sounds like the perfect hero, and when she's a badass, she defintiely sounds like a badass. ;) For me it seems a strong willed, smart, sexy women saving the galaxy is exactly the kind of thing you don't see, which is why she continues to shock and amaze.

And of course theres this guy Kaidan... <3

I mostly play FemShep but I'm planning on eventually making a ManShep either before or after 3 is out. :) It'll feel strange since I'm so used to playing FemShep and hearing Jen's voice but what the hell, always nice to try something new!

Men should mostly play as men, rarely as women and Women should mostly play as women, rarely as men in video games.
It is the matter of personality not as fluid as colors, smells, tastes but not too important also.

I think people should be allowed to play as whoever they want.

But what makes a hetero guy want to play as a female Shepard?

Like I said, almost 50% or more of the FemShep community are straight males. I asked at one point and most of them said "I don't want to be staring at a man's ass all day" or something similar to that line. It might also be because they prefer Hale VA over Meer, or they like lesbian action. (Liara! ... But really, double standards are retarded.) or...They wanna get with Garrus 'cuz he's super bromance material and if you want more than that it can only happen with FemShep. It's also a different experience. There are many reasons.

I thought that being male, why would I want to play a FemShep at all. But the above-mentioned point seems the most accurate. I don't like staring at a chick's ass all day so my Sheps are always males. Simple...:D

Wow, someone is really burned and bitter.  Where is this cult at, can you provide links?

I could certainly link to such things if I wished to derail this thread. . . but I don't. Suffice it to say, though, that I have come across a fair number of anti-male Shepard articles and attitudes in various locations around the internet (including [but not limited to] Facebook and LiveJournal) and I'm royally sick and tired of it.

I noticed a lot of MaleShep fans getting things twisted just because FemShep fans have a preference for their favorite character and their voice actor.

Actually, you're wrong. If it was simply people saying, 'I think Hale is great' or 'I think Hale is better,' or even 'Hey, a believable female protagonist in a kick-ass game, yay!' I doubt anyone would have any problem with that. The issue is that it seems impossible for most people to make any such statements without resorting to man-bashing or anti-Meer statements. That is my issue and that doesn't seem to show any sign of abating any time soon. Anything that starts with 'No offense to people that like playing as male Shepard, but...' is going to be an anti-male tirade and I am tired of having to read it/hear about it everywhere I go.

It's the inability of some (not all) fem Shep supporters to accept the fact that not everyone think that Jennifer Hale is the second coming of Christ that really rubs me the wrong way. Is she a great voice actress? Absolutely! But her fanbase is seriously creepy with their fanatacism and has managed to completely turn me off of the character of female Shepard. Think of the Halemancers as the group that took up the mantle of Most Obnoxious Fanbase on the BSN after the departure of the most hardcore Talimancers.

ETA: Quite frankly, the one thing I *am* bitter about is the fact that some a lot of people are trying to force gender politics into a video game. FFS, people, can't you just let people play the game and enjoy it for what it is and not force real life politics into it?

I think it applies to all fanbases. And I do agree it's just a game and we do not need to achieve some sort of "everybody is represented"  quota.

I played ME1 about 3 times and ME2 about 5 time and every time I play as male Shepard mostly because thats what I am. I also like the male sheps romances, voice acting and think they suits me. Also I keep the default look most of the time becausse I think its iconic. What do you guys play as and what are your reasons?

I have 13 playthroughs in ME1 - 11 of those are females of various appearances, classes and names, of which one is a "default" Jane Shepard with her appearance mostly intact save for a slight change to make her look less horsefaced. One is a custom male by the name Hori (don't ask) and another unromanced Sheploo with the default name.

In ME2, my first playthrough was with the John Sheploo, originally created for the sole purpose of romancing Tali. After him, I've only played Jane Shepards from the original ME1 file, up until a week ago when i restarted my unromanced John Sheploo on Insanity and made him a sentinel (originally a soldier) and then an adept because sentinel turned out to be a soldier with an exploding barrier and less weapons. I did the SM today (and as of this writing I've done about 75% of the sidemissions).

The reasons for playing mostly FemSheps is because I'm a fan of Hale's voiceacting, because I liked Kaidan as an LI over Ashley and Liara, and of course, because Garrus turned out romanceable in ME2. I do like Sheploo's more "iconic" appearance, and I've decided that my first ME3 playthrough, just like in ME2, will be with the Sheploo for that "default cinematic" experience.

Erm...you could just not read these articles if they bother you so much that you have to claim they are all obviously in a cult.

Actually, you're wrong. If it was simply people saying, 'I think Hale is great' or 'I think Hale is better,' or even 'Hey, a believable female protagonist in a kick-ass game, yay!' Okay, you don't like it when people compare. You do know that a lot of MaleShep players do the same thing? Currently in this very thread. Why aren't you so fed up with it that you have to label all MaleShep fans as rabid women haters?

It's the inability of some (not all) fem Shep supporters to accept the fact that not everyone think that Jennifer Hale is the second coming of Christ that really rubs me the wrong way. You get an A for embellishment.

Gamers asking for a few extra bones and representation in a male dominated industry makes you bitter?

The problem is that if I want to read third-party articles about Mass Effect (i.e. not press releases or statements released directly from the Bioware/EA marketing department), chances are excellent that there will be a fat chunk of male Shepard bashing in it. I wish I were able to glory in my fandom without the worry of having to deal with so-called professional writers throwing in a character-bashing segment in an otherwise enjoyable article. I wish I could just enjoy being a Mass Effect fan without being put into the position of having to "defend" my preferences. I wish I could interact with fellow fans without having to deal with the anti-male Shepard brigade Every. Single. Time I want to gush over new developments and whatnot. I wish I could enjoy a video game for being a video game and not have to delve into complex and completely irrelevant social politics.

I wish I could be free to just be a fan again. :(

Nope; as I stated before, I just wish people wouldn't talk up fem Shep and Jennifer Hale directly at the expense of male Shepard/Mark Meer. Respect, that is all that I ask. But after wanting it for so long, I don't think that's likely to happen.

Well topic is a bit dumb.
You'll always get same answers.

It's either preference or "I don't like VA of X and Y is superior" or some troll/sexist.

I ment for everyone to talk about why you like male/female shepard, not to argue about others preferance. I wanted to know if playing as male or female feel deferant before I start a femshep play through and I think the answer is yes.

I've tried so hard to avoid things like that but that attitude tends to show up completely out of the blue in otherwise innocuous articles/discussion threads. I don't think I should feel compelled to leave entire forums and communities because a few people can't stop themselves from bashing their non-preferred gender/voice actor.

But it's okay for MaleShep fans to say they prefer MaleShep's voice and hate how butch FemShep sounds, right?

You're not a victim. Because I'm getting the feeling you are trying to make yourself into one. Deal with it. FemShep fans have had to deal with mostly ManShep marketing, Jack as to deal with STDs, and woman over 40 have to deal with menopause.

Plenty of ManShep fan's have insulted Jennifer Hale's VW, while they support Meers. Let's not pretend FemShep fans are the only case-and-scenerio.

Mark is cool, expressive and funny. Jennifer sounds bored and monotonous. Of course there's a difference. But you won't enjoy the emptiness and dryness of her lacklustre voicing.

I guess that this whole thread is just a big bomb waiting for the right moment to explode. And by that I mean that there are fights happening right now, but inner fights... wait for the thing to get bigger and you'll see.

I like Sheploo. His face is an icon, and I actually like Mark Vanderloo's face very much.
