I need some tips on how to manage my squat during fire fights. The second I'm in a fire fight I either send one guy for cover at my 7 and one either in the front or at 3 o' clock. This way I can either move ahead or flank. Problem is, I find they just seem to open fire and get gunned down. They are behind cover and everything except they never seem to stay alive for too long.
However, when I leave them on automatic by pressing C they tend to stay alive way longuer but I cannot decide any ground to hold since they move around on their own.
What can I do?
Help managing squad under fire, they always die!

Equip them with burst-fire weapons, instead of automatic fire. That way they ll pop outof cover, let off a burst or two, and then duck back.
Shuriken SMG and Vindicator AR are the best for that.

Incisor Sniper Rifle also has burst fire, and shotguns. But, I've seen them 4 round burst fire with Mattock too.

The best way to keep them alive is to play aggressively. You can't force them to stay behind cover nor can you taunt enemies, so sometimes there's nothing you can do. Besides keeping the enemy busy doing stuff like burning, filling up with plasma, or falling off a building, that is. You know.
Unless there are rocket launchers or in some specific cases, I don't give them move commands at all.

You playing on Insanity?
MY suggestion is to lay down suppressing fire so that your teammate can run to their destination, also use your abilities to distract the enemies or stun them.

Enemies shoot at you first. If your squad mate is in trouble, just popping up is sometimes enough to let them get back into cover. If you hide behind too much cover for too long your suqadmates will die. If you activate the infiltrators cloak too much, your squadmates will die.

^The above three posts are most helpful. Regardless of weapon loadout, the enemy AI plays the same way.
Enemies prioritize you heavily, so you can almost always distract them away from your squaddies if needed. Give squaddies covering fire when needed. Enemies will usually turn their attention to you. Most importantly, play aggressive. Ideally, squaddies will always be behind you (which has other benefits too), which will help a lot to keep them alive. Instructing squaddies to take positions behind you also helps a bit. They won't always give you as much cover fire this way, but often it's better this way, just knowing you can rely on their powers w/o them dying on you.

Assign them to cover locations. Then check periodically that they haven't moved slightly out of cover. Many times if they are hit by a rocket, etc., their position will be just back from cover so that they are standing and firing the whole time.
No way to stop this, only thing you can do is position them back to cover.

You don't always have to play aggressive. Just being close enough to the enemies is sufficient for them to obessess over Shep. The Rocket Drones outside the Shadow Broker ship are a good example. There are too many of them, it's a constant barrage of rockets. But, they do not flank. So, I left Shep behind cover all the time, not firing a shot, and used Miranda and Liara's powers to deal with them.

Yes, my usual problem is also squadmates standing on cover, jumping over cover, sitting a foot behind cover, looking out of side of cover and getting stuck because of clipping problems...
Solution 1. Since possibility of casting is dependent on Shepard's vision, not the caster's angle of view, take two casters and set them facing the concrete wall, bulletproof glass or something similar :-P
Solution 2. Enemies try to focus on closest target, so Vanguard or any other aggressive Shepard should care only how to not die

nicethugbert is actually right. While playing aggressively is a good idea, it's actually enough to be close.
AI Hacking and Dominate also work very well. A build that uses these two heavily will be taking substantially less fire.

i have found , as above mentioned, that going rambo protects my squadmates .
also, and i'm sure it's just an illusion, when i take zaeed/garrus, or zaeed/grunt , or garrus /grunt
if i play really aggressively it feels like they also get more intense.
And if i have to take cover for a few seconds, i hate it because i can see they're taking all the fire and might just die.
