I take it I can't entice you into Hobo Quest 3: The Search for Warm Socks? Shame. It had a detailed thread customization system where you can independently pick the atoms of the socks you are equiping, for effectively infinite customization options. Your hobo might look the same as another hobo, but not at the atomic level!

Sorry, since I can't dress the other Hobos in my party it is isn't worth my time.

Not sure I agree you can role play in AC even because Ezzio, yours and mine, will end the game in exactly the same state and having made all the same decisions. That's still the key. Even something like Bioshock that has leveling (via colecting Adam and not XP), inventory, customization and even some choices doesn't rise to the level of an RPG because you've functionally got IIRC 2 choices (the little sisters and how to deal with the artist). Bioshock and AC have a rich story but when people talk about Hawke not being "their" character that's not true. Ezzio and the dude from Bioshock aren't your characters (that being the point in Bioshock) because you have no/very limited control over what they do.

....

I said RP, not RPG. They are completley different things if you look at it in a certain perspective. In AC I can Roleplay Ezio by refusing to kill Gaurds for example. It doesn't make it an RPG, I'm just roleplaying. Like a play for example. RPG's and Roleplaying are different things; IF you look at it, at an angle where it makes sense.

When I say Roleplaying I mean acting a Role. RPGs have that because it's a requirement, but it's not the the fundamental rules of an RPG.

Very true. I can Role Play in Football Managers. Heck, I even have stats that progress through my career in the game. But that doesn't make it a RPG. Just the most addictive sports sim of all time.

So basically.  To sum the OP's initial argument.  The only type of game that can call itself an RPG is a CRPG.  Anything different isn't an RPG and it sucks.

Really?  I thought the OP was about 1 game getting bad reviews on metacritic because it wasn't a carbon copy of the first game, was a Harbinger of the downfall of the entire genre.

Plus the thread has simply reinforced the fact that if you ask 10 people what a RPG you'll get 10 different answers.

One question that can be asked is do see the genre declining because it is not producing the type of CRPG or VRPG that you want to play? Is the genre declining in overall quality? Or is the genre evolving in a direction you do not like but other do?

What are developers suppose to do? Because if you get what you want it may mean I do not get what I want or vice versa. The one point we have to concede is that developers will follow the money. Most developer want to please the maximum amount of their audience to generate the most profit taking into account developments costs.

No one is in this business to lose money and trying to predict audience tastes is always hard. I will take an example from the movies. The Blair Witch Project had a budget of roughly $750,000. The box office sales reached $248 Million. Green Lantern cost $200 Million to make. Its box office receipts to date is $118 million. So right now the movie is tanking. It may or may not break even. Does that mean that all movies from that producer will have the same result?
Or that every low budget independent film will be a Blair Witch. The answer is no,

Does it mean the genre for superhero films is declining? No, The numbers for Thor are quite different. The film cost $150 million to make, but has rake in $436 million.

There are so many variables to take into account when predicting what will and will not connect with an audience.

The CRPG/VRPG genre is not declining, but it will evolve. There hopefully will be developers (independent and big name) that cater to a whole variety of tastes in the genre. But it may not be the company you use to buy your games from.

One game does not indicate the decline of a genre or a company.

Since this thread is no longer about Dragon Age II, I'm shutting it down. If you wish to discuss the RPG genre as a whole, please use our Off-Topic forum. Thank you.

End of line.
