Designing helmets for DLC is prohibitively expensive, apparently.

I can't really tell if this is supposed to be sarcasm or not

More like sardonicism. At any rate it was definitely not meant to be taken too seriously.

Actually, "cutting corners" was the idea behind giving them human-like bodies. They were originally supposed to look more alien with bigger, wider heads.
Edit: awww, what the hell. I'll post a pic:

Perhaps they use two eyes to look out and the other two to read a detailed HUD?
While the real reason is just that Bioware didn't have the time/resources ect, to design new helmets for the Batarians, this explanation works for me. It is a good enough 'in universe' explanation as any.

If Bioware had used the original concept, I wonder how their bodies would have looked? Would they have had remained similar in build to humans? Taller? Shorter?

That old concept has them looking... snooty, arrogant. Calm... and always looking down on you.

I don't think it would've been that hard to have one modeler take the helmets and just make two extra holes for the Batarians.
Hence why I said laziness. I've done some amateur modding before for games and even I could alter the mesh and texture file of a helmet to add in two more sets of eye holes. It would probably take me about ten minutes, with the texture file taking up the majority of the time.

Oh I know, but yeah... I figure that explanation works.

^This is probably the real reason it was done this way.Its been commented on before. It's just a matter of laziness and saving resources. It was easier to re-use a two eyed helmet than have to create a four eyed one. It'll probably change for ME:3.
^This is how you can explain it away to fit in-universe, if you care that much.Perhaps they use two eyes to look out and the other two to read a detailed HUD?

The lack of a proper prison outfit for Kenson and a unique Batarian shuttle were more examples of laziness and rushing.

The helmets in ME2 are re-used ME1 assets. Why would you expect them to change?

Exactly. It should take them about the same time. I don't understand why they couldn't have simply don that. I mean they spent time creating completely new species and new armors. Why couldn't they have put aside a few minutes to add extra eye holes for the Batarians. Poor them. Imagine how annoying it would be for them. It would be like us having a helmet with one eye hole or only half the visor or wearing an eyepatch. Lol.

And I can't be the only one who thinks "two more eye holes" sounds idiotic. Why would they put eye holes? They just need slightly less helmet and more visor.

Yeah, what was with Kenson's ugly, horrendous, and slapped together face? (half serious)

Which would be even easier. Its much easier to create a single larger hole in the mesh and join the edges than it is to create two small round ish holes, and the Texture file is even easier. Just select the area for the visor. Coulour it a grey ish colour, set that colour to alpha (making it transparent). Then with a program like Nifscope you apply an alpha channel and...done.

Well, that face did look like they pulled some kid off the street and gave him 5 bucks to make it. Then slap Kelly's hair on it.
But I was referring to Hackett a.k.a. Zaeed Mk II.
