One of the big things I liked in ME2 was the fireteams and specialist decisions...  It just made me sad that only one mission made use of them.

Its like you have this team of 12 people, but only 3 people actually do anything 99% of the time.  Do the other 9 just kinda waddle in behind you 20 yards back or something?  We know they dont all stay on the ship or you would be charging into the collector base with only 3 people (shuttle = clown car?).

It would be cool to see missions where you have to send in biotic or tech specialists on tasks that help or hinder the mission's outcome based on your choice.  Maybe if you make poor squad choices, some squadmates are injured and become unavailable (Recoverying in sick bay) for a mission or two - Even die if you screw up that badly.  I mean Doc Chakwas needs to do more in my Normandy than just sit around and drink Serris Ice Brandy all day if she wants to earn her keep!

You could even go beyond the cookie cutter tech/biotic specialist and go into fire support roles... Garrus, Thane, or Leigon could be used as sniper cover etc...

I just thought it was a pretty cool feature that I really hope they use more extensively in ME3.

Agreed. That was one of my favorite parts of ME2 and I hope they make more use of the mechanic in ME3. It was cool that my whole team was involved in the battle. It was also nice to make actual command decisions. Since I'm supposed to be a commander and all.

Yes, every mission in ME3 should incorporate this "Suicide Mission" feel somehow BUT with some missions resulting in casualities of your teammates a la Virmire (and NOT because you made a "bad" decision like in the Suicide Mission in ME2). This will make the game so much more epic and give it the true feel of a final game in the trilogy.

But I remember hearing that unlike ME2, you'll only have a few permanent squadmates throughout the game so I don't know how this'll work.

I would like this, actually. I'm one of ~*those*~ people who tends to stick to one team (in my case, Thane and Garrus) and so everyone else sat on my ship and read trash rags until it was time for their loyalty quest. Poor squaddies need more to do.

I would have liked the option of a "scrounge team", consisting of Kasumi, Mordin and Tali to go into the area once Shep has cleaned it out, to gather up whatever they could to help fund the war effort.

^This, scrouging around for resoucres in ME2 killed the pacing of certain missions.

Agreed. we have a Hammerhead... Maybe Mako? and Kodiac. no reason the other squadmates can't contribute while we are in mission. I love the idea of giving everyone something to do.

Woo hoo! I used Garrus and Thane too. I'm actually going to try using them with Incisors on my next playthrough to see how crazy powerful they can be. I liked the way they went about doing things in ME2. Every squadmate was guaranteed to participate in a mission for loyalty, and you got to decide who's strengths suited which tasks in the suicide mission. I wouldn't really want to change that. It would be nice if there were missions in ME3 where it is recommended that you bring a certain squadmate (like bringing Grunt along with you on Tuchanka missions or Garrus on Palaven). Kind of like bringing Liara to Peak 15.

I love the idea, but isn't this a bit late in the development cycle to be bringing up this kind of stuff? We are less that a year out from launch, and given how development cycles work, that probably means that most of the main content is already in the game, and the team is working on polishing it out.

According to the Known Feature topic squadmates aren't going to work exactly like in ME2, so this might actually be the case. It'd be fantastic if it were.

Wouldn't it be awesome if you could pick and choose three characters to be on the second team, then throughout the mission you could pick up mission updates from the team leader?

How awesome would it be if you saw an explosion about a kilometer away, and you knew it was because your fire team was kicking ass?

Then, you could have this:

Shepard (over the radio): "Second Team! What's your status??"
Garrus: *cough* "Second Team! Report!"
Ashley: "That blast knocked me back a bit, but I'm good to go!"
James: "Same here!"
Garrus: "Second Team's still operational, Shepard! Hostiles have been eliminated here; we're moving ahead."
Shepard: "Roger that, Second Team. Keep your heads down; those fighters are making some low passes. Shepard, out."

Me: :o

Mine would be more:

Shepard: Second team, status report.
Kaidan: We're getting killed over here!
Shepard: Yeah, well, been there, done that. It's not so bad.
Vega: HOLY SH--
Shepard: Holy me? What?
Kaidan: ROCKETS INCOMING!
Shepard: Garrus took one to the face and lived. You'll be fine.

That's just how Shepard rolls.

I'm not opposed to it, but with the way this universe/story gets crapped on a daily basis, I just want the reasoning behind the second teams to be solid, or we're going to have another "whole team shuttle ride" on our hands.

I doubt it would be too hard to cook up, since a lot of the missions are WE'RE GONNA FRY UNLESS WE DO SOMETHING. Plus, something always needs to be hacked/exploded/biotically blown sky high.

What might make it fun is if you meet up halfway through and switch members. Say for the first part, you need some hacking done, but you also need to distract Generic Baddie Mooks. So Shepard leads the distraction team, while Garrus goes around the back and starts frying their electronics, with, say, Mordin (who is on board for this mission) helps him out. Once that's done, you meet up, and now you have to take Garrus because someone needs to break open the big doors. So you switch out with Vega, who them continues distractions on your behalf with Mordin while you, Garrus, and Ashley storm the gates.

As has been tweeted several times by developers -- do not assume that squadmate availability will work the same way it always has. From the sound of it, the cast of characters is more liquid and you may not have more than a handful at any given time.

Also, since these games are nonlinear, they would have little idea as to how many people you have available for a given mid-game mission. Since the suicide mission was at the end of the game, they could assume that you had a minimum of 8 people going into the relay and a minimum of 5 once you boarded the station.

The term "****ed out" comes to mind when you talk of doing something like this on a regular basis. The suicide mission wouldn't have been as great as it was if they had done multi-team missions prior to that. It would have seemed very anticlimactic.

This is why I want a multiplayer Mass Effect Fps game...let us form fireteams with other players and experience the epic skirmishes and gun battles in Mass Effect and let us make up strategies and stuff like that (and I mean that literally, give us customization and let us have a menu screen and chat screen that opens up where you can choose what role you will play in a battle, say for example you stand back and snipe incoming enemies while another guy who has good shields and guns takes all of the enemy firepower and two others freestyle)

Agreed. The Kodiak can carry the entire squad (including DLC squadmates) at once; why in the heck do we only take two people on every mission while everyone else just sits on the ship?

Missions like Zaeed's LM could have been solved by splitting up the team to handle each task.

Yeah well, a lot of stuff could have been handled differently, like calling in the bloody Normandy SR2 to lock on to a gunships signature and test out that new Thanix cannon.

But yes, silly that squadmates apparently all go in to the Kodiac and then just sits there.. :)

Well in the ME3 gameplay demo at E3 you saw this already.

Shepard with T'Soni and Vakarian in the shore party, Shepard lazing a target for the Normandy, all hell breaking loose.
And then Legion smashing into the scene with tank while mentioning that "we have located transportation".

That feels a little bit more involved and visible then most parts of the suicide mission of ME2.
Which is nice :)

They lower the amount of squad members in ME3, so there isn't really enough squad members than maybe for two team. But it's interesting idea in general, not sure what's the point send others in mission if Shepard it self is left in Normandy. Player is playing, not just been General of army watching what others do.

How ever, going more in direction like ME2 final or Virmine missios, where Shepard is also there but other team is also doing something. That would be nice.

That's something that always bothered me in RPG's in general. I'll have this relatively large team, but only two or three of them are allowed to come with me, and the excuse is ALWAYS "a small team would be better for this mission."

You know what? No. A small team would not be better. Every one of my team members is some kind of badass specialist. You cannot convince me that bringing all twelve of them to steamroll the opposition is a bad idea on anything other than a stealth mission, and even then I might still pick the 'obliterate everything with a big wall of psychopaths wielding science-magic and guns" option. Except that I can't.

I usually 'role play' that my team gets exhausted after so many missions and needs a break every once in awhile for the reason why I don't just do the logical thing and take them *all* with me. This also gives me an excuse to use other squadmates whose personalities or skills better fit the current mission, rather than just sticking with my favorites. I like variety in combat, after all.

Hopefully with the reduced team size it's not as much of a problem in ME3.

I am sure that ME3 will have this. Hopefully more as something implemented in more normal missions and not just "do it right or they die" missions
