It could be interesting to have the party members not currently in use work as one shot powers for Shepard to use. Each squad member would be only available once per mission, but Shepard would have the ability to use each of their signature abilities. For example, Shepard could have Garrus snipe a particular opponent or Tali could do a long range hack to disable a mech opponent.

I love this idea, if used sparingly. I wouldn't want it in EVERY SINGLE MISSION or anything, but on the big game changer type missions it'd be fantastic.

The final mission should be a model for how future Bioware games perform.
Unlike krislandis - I think I actually would like it on every single mission. I'd like the pew pew to be cut by a third for all missions (and a half for some) with cut-scenes and decisions taking the place of me "ducking" and "pew pewing" yet again.
I think this could make use of a whole new set of extremely valid skill options.
Leadership for the main character provides a bonus to Fireteams.
NPCs could gain a skill that advances them during their time away from "the Boss".
And those skills could be thrown in with the future "Paragon/Intimidate - Good/Evil" dialogue options in their own set of point distribution that is separate from the "pew pew" stats so nobody complains about having their character gimped for RPing.
It would give so much more life to NPCs and make me feel like they're all always with me.
Plus - not every mission has to be pass/fail = success/death. Failure could simply be that the "Main Team" has a harder mission. The final reward in money or items is less. Etc.
====
How great would the Virmire mission have been if you "could" have had Kaidan and Ashley survive it - even if it was really difficult and every choice had to be spot on (and the variables of their skills, vs Shepard skills, player decisions, etc.) would make for a fairly randomized event.

It would be indeed nice to see in major missions.

Yup, that was my No. 1. wish in top 5 things you want to see in ME 3 thread.
And if it is too difficult, than I would like to see at least simulation of it by scripted radio communication with squadmates, other scripts (e.g. different team blows something up for my main team) and pre and post mission dialogues.

agreed,
not sure how scripted it is but if you watch the game play footage and trailers you see squad mates giving fire support from the Normandy, Legion commandeering a Geth ship and Mordin hacking terminals. whether its the same kind of thing as the suicide mission I don't know but it looks a lot like it.

I'm all for this idea with one tweak - you should have total freedom to send any member of your team on any secondary objective. Given the much smaller pool of available permanent allies in Mass Effect 3, your options would, at times, be quite limited if there were restrictions on who you could choose ('character must be a biotic,' for example.)
Having, say, Ashley provide additional battlefield recon from a sniper position while Shepard, Liara and Garrus tackle the main objective would be a great addition to smaller plot missions and it would open up lots of new options such as having her deal with enemy sniper positions, infiltrate the base and open up doors for Shepard and the team rather than them just being able to waltz into the base and go wherever they like.
