My Mood Music for the ending....
Shepard looks around him. Surrounded by dirt, rubble, dust and smoke flying through the air. The sky turning Orange with a hint of grey from the clouds. The sun rising it all its beautiful glory with the sparkling Abyss below.  Citizens stare at it in awe. The meaning behind it spreading it's warmth around, comforting them. It was over, they had won.. A tiring, long journey, sacrifices, deaths, all over.
Shepard walks up to a raised piece of rubble and stands starting at the rising sun. He feels kind of emotional, exausted. Relief floods his body making him smile. Those that died, who sacrificed their lives will never be forgotton. They will stay in everyones hearts and minds.
Miranda walks up next to Shepard and places her arm on his shoulder. They look at each other with love and admiration. He takes her hand from his shoulder and wraps it around his neck. They embrace as they stare off into the sunset.
Today was a new beginning. The start of a new life for everyone.

So yeah, this is my kind of ending.... Posted Image

This is the ending of all endings - either this or I let the galaxy die.  Besides, the reapers can have Earth.  And the Batarians.  :)

You forgot the kiss. The passionate kiss that symbolizes that life still goes on despite all the losses. The dead are gone, but the new ones are going to be born, and hero and his heroine are going to start working on this - right NOW.

I've seen this trope so many times I've lost count. The hero and his heroine stand against the background of a totally demolished city (demolished by the hero himself, in his pursuit of the villain - no villain can ever do so much damage to the civilians as hero can.) They stand on the corpses of the fallen, knee-deep in blood. There's an overwhelming smell of rotten flesh and burnt organics. Dead husks are littering the ground, slowly turning into green pools of goo. You can hear the screams of the wounded, begging for help. You can hear the sound of fighting - some of the enemy still survived.

And what do the hero and his heroine do? Why, they look at each other with affection, ignoring everything else around them (this is the perfect moment to show their love to each other - even better than a morgue or a hospital, because those people are still not treated nor picked up for burial - the death's still fresh in the air.) And, they exchange a passionate kiss. Mind you, the heroine's hair and makeup are perfect. Never mind the dead and the dying, and the countless those who fell by my hand, and the countless those who can still be saved. We're going to mate and contemplate the sunset as a symbol of an eternal the cycle of life.

I've no doubts that the Reapers do something similar when they finish the harvesting. Do they have any stars long-lived enough, for Reapers to gaze at and contemplate the eternal cycle, which can never be broken? Stars are good for gazing at. Nah, wait, they don't have anything like that in the dark space. So they'd have to gaze at the stars while they're still in this galaxy.

Reaper1: Look at ENDAIR-18009223. I saw it last time we were here. It's even more beautiful than before.

Reaper2: Good to see it's still here. I was afraid that it's going to turn supernova before we returned.

Reaper1: Then a new star would be born. New stars are always born. A new system would be formed. And the Sentinel would place a new mass relay in that system. Evolution cannot be stopped.

Reaper2: The cycle cannot be broken.

Everything in the OP. Beautiful piece by the way. Not really mass effect themed, but does makes the tears well up :crying:.

To add to that, I need to see a classic Shepard cheesy corner mouth smile at the end.

Please don't Dragon Age us, BioWare. I don't want Shepard dissappearing into the abyss and s/he may or may not return.

I want to feel like I just won a war versus impossible odds. The galaxy is in ruin, species are on the brink of extinction, cultures have been destroyed, but goddammit we won.

If they can deliver an "epic" feeling of winning a hard fought war, it would be hard to have a bad ending for me.

I also wouldn't mind an ending where we lose. Especially something like GodWood mentioned that would be neat.

ME3 clearly ends with Shepard leaving everybody behind to fight against an ancient evil that waits in the unknown depths of space.

Jump a couple of thousand years forward and we get Mass Effect Online.

Maybe he'll meet Revan and the Exile and fights some Old Sith along the way.

I'm not good at writing stuff but here goes...

The last of the resistance is being shot out of the sky, they retreat to the Citadel with the Reapers close behind them no option remains. They are forced to proceed with their last desperate act.Mordin and Tali are trying to reprogram the main control unit...

Tali:Are you sure this'll work Chorbin?

Chorbin:The Keeper data says it should, lets just hope the fleets can distract the Reapers long enough.

*A long battle engages, the Normandy takes a bad hit causing the barriers to drop and then an explosion happens in the AI core.Edi malfunctions causing Joker to lose control of the ship he crash lands onto the Citadel.*

The reapers keep pounding them with powerful gunfire, the galaxy is about to be completely defensely to the reapers.

Mordin:It's ready ,position the Prothean artifact...I can't believe it came to this.

The Citadel starts spinning,a loud buzzing noise starts and a red aura flows outward it hits the reapers disabling them.A Beam of pure energy fires out and hits a relay off in the distance, the beam fires through the relay moving to a second one.

It transfers through all the relays causing them all to start malfunctioning, out of nowhere the relays explode causing a wave of element zero to shoot out in all directions making all nearby planets atmosphere's to be destroyed in an instant. the galaxy lays in ruins trillions are dead with only a dozen planets surviving the destruction of the relays. All that remains is a few hundred thousand of most species.

The screen goes back to the Citadel,a small piece of shrapnel flies by past the wreckage. It flips around and then the cut-scene goes in slow motion...

The shrapnel says N7 on it...

I'd delibereately play a 'losing' play through just to get that ending - but then I would feel bad and never do it again. But once would be awesome.

Okay, I'm gonna splice my ending with a tweaked copy of Admiral Cheez's ending and intertwine it with some new material at the end.

Listen to this - skip to 6:30 - and read:

Shepard is badly beaten, alone and naked in the dark - most of her companions are lost - the Reapers are whispering in her ear - she struggles as hard as any human possibly can to get to the light at the end of the tunnel - everything she's ever prepared for has been for this moment - the whispers are now screams - crawling forward, she desperately clings to the thought of all the people she's fighting for - the machines try relentlessly to crush her mind - she screams in pain - she almost doesn't make it -  then one thought lances through the chaos: a figure standing in the void of her mind.. the figure turns to look at Shepard.. Shepard cries when she realises who it is.. and then the figure smiles at her - the Reapers make one final push - Shepard makes one final push back - she barely reaches the end of the tunnel - she nearly can't take it anymore - through the tears, she smiles, "I love you, Liara..." - she turns the failsafe key.  (wait for 7:35**)

-Fade to black; fade to epilogue-

The Reapers have destroyed nearly everything.  The galaxy is a smoldering ruin, with a population of trillions knocked down to a few dozen billion, perhaps even less.  The survivors, out of options, banded together, the remains of their civilizations finally setting aside their differences out of desperation, and launched a last ditch, all-or-nothing offensive that hinged on an insane plan and a massive amount of luck.

The instant the two forces smashed together, every living, conscious organism seemed to hold its breath...

At first, it wasn't certain if the plan had succeeded or not, but slowly the remainding crew of the Normandy opened their eyes, shocked to discover they were still alive.  Contact was re-established with other ships, and it was revealed that the plan had, in fact, worked--the Reapers had been beaten back.

Anderson and company looked over the ruins, bloodied and worn out, their faces were grim with so much loss still fresh in their memories.  They all took a moment thinking about Shepard, contemplating the effect her mission had had on the final battle; some pondered if it was possible for her to survive.  After the moment had passed, Anderson looked around again, and noticed Liara off in the distance, taking a shuttle.  He considered calling out for her, but quickly understood what she needed.  He looked back at the faces around him, then up into space, and an optimistic glow was seen in the Admiral's eyes.

-Cut to Liara in Shadowbroker HQ-

Cue Clint Mansell mood music

Like a ghost, Liara droned into her secret lair.  For a long while she stared blankly at the walls and monitors of the command centre.  On one of the speakers she could hear Anderson speaking:

".......We won.  We lost nearly everything, but we won.  There may be little but rubble left of our cities, nothing but a few worn-out cruisers left of our fleets, but we will rebuild.  We will start over.  Different.  Better.  Things will be hell at first, with most of the relays nonfunctional and communications with survivors cut off, but after fighting against gods, our next task will seem easy. We are free, free to determine our own future.  Free to choose what we are and what we will become.........."

She backed slowly against a wall.  She blinked.  Her lip quiverred.  And then, with all the details of Shepard's mission flowing through her head, she simply collapsed onto the floor and all the tears she had poured down her face.

She opened her mouth, as if to wail out, but no sound came out.  The loss was simply too much for her.  She fell onto her side and clutched herself as if to grasp someone hard against her.

She stared at her own reflection on the floor... then immediately saw nothing; her eyes went black.  With no one to meld with, she was simply in the void of her own mind.  For a long while there were only her emotions surrounding her; no tangible images or sounds...

But, then, after several hours, she suddenly saw an armored figure appear in the distance.  It walked forward slightly, faltered for a moment... and then collapsed onto the invisible floor.  At first, Liara simply stared, but after a short moment a familiar surge of emotions washed over her.

Her blue eyes blinked open.. In the distance was no longer an armored figure in a black void...

It was Shepard.  Naked, heavily wounded and lying face down near the entrance of the central room.

Liara immediately ran toward her lover and turned her onto her lap. "Shepard!"

Shepard stirred and then stared up at her, "...Liara..."

Liara reacted with a flow of tears.  She smiled down at her, "You made it back... You did it... we won."

Shepard managed through a tearful smile, "It worked... we're free..."

Liara: "We are free..."

Shepard lifted her hand to touch the side of Liara's face and nodded.  With a heavy sigh of relief, she looked up out the window...  "Everyone has a future now..."

-Pan camera out into sky and fade to black-

FIN.

Mine:

I saved the old council, and they live through the whole thing in ME3. In the aftermath of the war with the Reapers, Shepard goes to the Citadel to see them again and Udina suggests that the council and Shepard make an address to the rest of the galaxy before they begin picking up the pieces.

After the councilors get their turn, Shepard gets up on the podium. He looks into the camera and with a strong sense of conviction and says "I should go," turning around and leaving for the Normandy. Turian councilor is not amused.

Then I go pirate and live like a king with Jack. The end.

Seriously, entire armies of alien races that Shepard selected to sacrifice themselves by luring different groups of Reapers to them in certain star systems. There, they fight the Reapers until they coordinate detonating each Relay in their system and the Geth use Dyson Spheres to detonate blow up the systems' stars (as seen in ME1 and 2 Protheon beacons)

Sounds crazy but I think this will actually be one of the endings

Apologies for wierdness; I tried to paste from Word and failed epically.

The Reapers cannot be defeated
by traditional means. It took everything the combined species had to kill
Sovereign, along with it being partially incapacitated. Thus, destroying all
the Reapers will take more...

For the sake of space, Shepard is only a male.

Shepard raced down the hallway,
not worried about the noise he was making; the bizarre moans of the husks
covered his footsteps. As a husk suddenly popped up just in front of him, he
quickly drew his Claymore and blasted it to bits. He was nearly there. He
turned a corner.
About twenty husks, human
batarian and krogan, were stumbling into each other. As he came into view,
however, they turned with a single purpose. Shepard was glad they couldn't
shoot. He quickly lobbed a grenade through the air, pulling out his assault
rifle as well. Aiming carefully, he took out ten of the husks through these
methods alone. Two krogan husks and eight batarian husks remained.
He kept shooting, but they kept
coming. Backpedalling around the corner, he tossed another grenade. A moment
later the two krogan husks turned the corner to see...nothing. A moment later,
both of them fell as Claymore shots split their innards. Shepard deactivated
his cloak.
He moved forward: everything was
quiet now. Well, pretty quiet anyway. The inside of a Reaper was never quiet,
he'd found. As soon as it had realized he was inside of it, the indoctrination
had been turned up. Shepard felt like his brain was slowly dissolving. But he
kept moving forward. He was the only hope...
He turned the final corner and
there it was: The core of the Reaper. This one was very different from the dead
one he'd encountered a few months--and yet ages--ago. This one was quite alive.
He could hear the sounds of the other Reapers being relayed through this hub;
it wasn't understandalbe, of course, but the tones were. Everything was going
smoothly.
That was going to change.
Shepard started slashing, cutting, and shooting at anything that looked
important. The ship shook in response, and he heard the sound of husks coming
his way.
He had to hurry. He pulled out the device Legion had assembled, with the
collective help of the Geth and Quarians. He didn't really believe in magical
endings, but this device would isolate the Reaper's communications and overload
their systems. "Meltdown" was the term Tali had used. Legion had said
"Explosion of indeterminable size."
Moments later, it was over. The
Reaper was beginning to shake and the sounds coming in were anxious and
alarmed, but Shepard wasn’t there: he was racing back the way he’d come, trying
desperately to get out of the ship. He moved quickly, gunning down husks
efficiently, robotically. All around him the metal was slowly heating.
At last, he reached the opening,
to see it was blocked. Horror flashed across his face before he snarled and
attacked the door. Shotguns, rifles, and grenades all proved ineffective. The
walls and the floor were beginning to smoke.
Finally, he raced backwards
several hundred yards. This was his last chance. Ignoring the husks coming his
way, he pulled out the ‘Cain.’ He pulled the trigger, only afterwards taking
care to aim it exactly where it needed to go.
The projective raced out of the
barrel at blinding speed. An instant later the blast occurred. Shepard turned
away and grabbed tight onto a piece of the wall that was being twisted out of
shape by the meltdown.
A moment later, the minor
atmosphere inside of the Reaper began shooting out of the hole. Shepard was
grabbing anything he could get his hands on to slow down; just in front of the
hole the doors stood bent and twisted. He grabbed them, then held on as he
looked out.
It was majestic and terrifying
at the same time. A field of Reapers, a far as the eye could see, were slowly
turning a bright red color. When one exploded, it would be over. Shepard looked
over at where the Normandy was hovering, watching his ship. He raised a fist in
victory.

Among the field of Reapers,
their consciousness was failing. The hyper-intelligent words became beastly
cries of pain and agony. They were immortal. This couldn’t be happening. Among
them one single Reaper remained intelligent enough to recognize the figure
about to leave the Central Reaper. A billion thoughts ran through his ‘brain’
in a nanosecond, calculating possible futures. A moment later, a beam of energy
left Harbinger’s main gun.

Shepard smiled with relief. It was
over! They had won. The galaxy was finally free. Free! He laughed as he
prepared to leap.
Shepard. He looked
around. Harbinger? Too late he saw it. I know you feel this.

An instant later he was sweeping
through the inside of the Reaper, bouncing off of peeling metal walls, his suit
cracking. He shot into the room he’d been in before, where he’d planted the
device.
He felt…pain. Sadness. Anger.
Remorse. Tired…

Then he felt nothing.

Here's my awesome ending of awesomeness:

Shepard watches as everything burns.  He begins to weep, falling to the ground...

...and wakes up a short time later in a bed.  He's disoriented, nothing looks familiar.  He hears water running, but it stops. He sits up in bed, in time to watch Kaidan amble lazily into the bedroom after his shower.  Shepard watches in utter confusion, his eyes following the other to the window.  His eyes rest on an open book on the nightstand, barely making out the words Risotto al Nero di Seppia.

"I just had the weirdest dream..."

I'm not very creative, so I can't think of an actual ending, but I can think of some elements that my ideal one would have.

~ The Citadel fleet (including all of its member and "associate" [the ones with ambassadors instead of councilors] species who have armies and/or navies), as well as the rachni, geth, and quarians all banding together to save the galaxy.

~ Shepard having some kind of cool friendship moments with his squad (Garrus for example)

~ Having at least one point in the game where Shep & co. team up to kick ass with Wrex (probably not part of the ending, but just laying that it there)

~ Touching moment or two with the romantic interest

~ Din Korlack, Lorik Qui'in, and Conrad Verner. Okay, this one was kind of a joke, but I did enjoy those characters, and I hope that Conrad gets a crowning moment of awesome.

~ When all is said and done, the galaxy has suffered casualties, but like Return of the Jedi, there is hope on the horizon.  It wasn't easy, but this is the opposite of a downer ending:

*staring, in disbelief*

"We won."

*pause*

"We did it? We really did it?!  We won!  My GOD, Shepard!  WE WON!!"

Cue the galaxy-wide celebrations, the hugs, and at the very end right before the credits roll and the epic music starts, Shepard is looking out a large window over some landscape or planet.

Edit:

First of all, I'd like to say, I just finished the Witcher 2 and while I think it is a beautiful game, I hope the end of ME3 will be nothing like the witchers (at least as far as the second game is concerned)!!!
I envisage very different endings for my Shepards.
For the paragon one, I'd have n ending similar to the admirals, maybe just with a bit more outlook (and cheese, of course no pun intended :)). Much has been destroyed but we see that on some worlds, maybe in a burnt out amphitheatre (nothing too technological) the leaders of the survivors meet to build a new council, one that encompasses all races, to form the new order for the galaxy.
For my paragade Shepard the ending could be a bit more depressing, with more destruction and one or several races completely wiped out but Shepard herself inspires the rebuilding efforts.
My renegade Shep would die, sacrificing himself in order to defeat the reapers, leaving behind grateful but mourning LI, team and galaxy.
Another possibility for renegade would be a Diablo-esque ending with him somehow melting with the reapers to keep them at bay but thereby dooming himself to an eternal fight, he can never stop.

"the forces of good and evil finally clashed for the final time. the collective universe held its breath as the entire Reaper horde came to a head against the united forces of the races... unfortunately, without the all-important deus ex machina that Shepard was SUPPOSED to collect from the beings of light on Klencoy, the good guys were all quickly obliterated and the Reapers seized control of the Citadel, Mass Relay network, and ultimately the universe. trillions of lives were extinguished in an instant, and the home planets of dozens of races, including Earth, were raized to the ground, their young and old inhabitants mercilessly slaughterd, while their adult inhabitants were assimilated into giant vats and reduced down to primordial ooze, repurposed as the next generation of Reapers. after 800 years the Reapers receeded once again into dark space, leaving an empty, desolate and cold universe behind, raped of life."

Shepard: Whoopsie. My bad. I knew I should've gotten on board with the whole Beings Of Light theory...

 Profile: James A. Shepard

Shepard blinked again. The ash and smoke stung his eyes, but there were no tears. He'd run out of enough fluid to cry hours ago. The thirst was over whelming.

He tried to move his arm. The claws of a husk were still buried deep into the muscles of his right arm. Medi-gel had stopped the bleeding but the severed ends of the fingers still protruded from his upper arm, caked in dried blood.

He blinked again. He didn't want to see Ash anymore. She'd been standing over him since the last Reaper took out his shuttle. All she did was stare. Why wouldn't she just go away. He'd loved her, but that seemed like such a long time ago. He cringed as she fell to ashes, burning again in nuclear fire.

Jenkins was just the same. Shepard knew he was hullucinating them both, but they were there sure enough. Every so often he'd fall to the ground, clutching at the hole Geth rifles tore through him. When he wasn't dieing he had that stupid grin on his face.

What he wouldn't give for some water. The Rachni's corpse that pinned his legs wasn't getting any lighter. it had fallen trying to protect him. Struck down by wounds suffered at the hands of one of its fellows turned into a husk. Or was it tentacles.... Didn't matter, he was still thirsty.

The omni-tool squawked with static. Had been for the last hour, Too bad it was broken. Only thing he heard from it was static. Ashley was back.

No, it wasn't Ashley this time. Ash's hair wasn't long and black. The armor that hugged the curves was battered and bloody, just like his. Ash's was always cleaned. The new voice said something, but Shepard couldn't make it out. Blood trickled from his ear drums.

She rushed to him. Blue energy lifted the insectoid corpse from his leg. She wrapped her arms around him. She smelled like lilacs and medical equipment. Miranda always smelled like lilacs. She kept them in her office.

The moisture in her lips breathed new life into his body when they met. He blinked again. Miranda's blue eyes twinkled through the dust and grime on her face. She was crying. Shepard wanted to cry this time, but it still wasn't happening.

He could make out the words on her lips, even if he couldn't hear them. "It's over." She says.

The award ceremony is long. Longer then Garrus had hoped. He shifts uncomfortably in his armor, freshly polished but still bearing old scars. He was Executor now but he still wore the old armor. Tali put a reassuring hand over his.
"We shouldn't be here. Not without Shepard, Tali." He grunts under his breath.  He's right, but she still shakes her head.
"He'll be here." He could tell shes smiling under her mask. He'd known her for so long now. Seems longer.

"For exemplary service, above and beyond any call of duty, and for saving the galaxy and most likely life as we know it, we honor Commander James A. Shepard."

The crowd rises, but the air is silent. The sounds of footsteps and a cane echo through the hall. Garrus looks for the source. It seems to be coming from everywhere at once.

The he saw him. Commander Shepard. The man may have had a medical brace on his leg, but he still looked like he could take down anyone in the room. Even injured he seemed to stride up to the podium, a cane in his hand. Miranda followed by his side until they got to the stairs leading to the podium, and then took a seat in the front row, next to Wrex and Anderson.

"Shepard, will you accept this honor, given by the Council and galaxy?"

He didn't say anything. He snapped a salute as they pinned the medal on his dress blues. Before the presenter could speak again he turned and saluted Anderson. Miranda rose and joined his side as he began to walk back down the aisle. Wrex stood and joined him, followed shortly by Kaiden and Liara from the crowd. When Garrus saw Legion, Joker and Chakwas rising he knew it was time to go. Every member of the Normandy's crew, SR1 and 2, were in attendance. Each and everyone of them rose and followed Shepard out.

The Reapers may be gone but there were still threats to the galaxy. And as his crew they'd follow him to hell and back to stop them.
