 ...............spoilers warning.........
return to ostagar offers cailans full set of armor, and many other awesome opportunities for great items, and loads of experience. however, i am curious as to whether or not it is worth waiting until logain joins the party or not, so that i can hear his dialogue during this quest...
i am really interested in experiencing the quest with logain present when we witness cailan crucified, and all the devastation because of logain. but i am torn, because i want cailans armor as soon as possible along with duncans sword, etc.
suggestions please???

If you want to get the armor & the swords as soon as possible, go to Ostagar first, why so confusing? It is not worth to wait until you recruit Loghain and then return to Ostagar. The sooner you get the Armor sets, the more efficiency your characters (or your companions) can get in combat.

Really the best thing is to do two playthroughs and bring Alistair in one and Loghain in the other. As far as the items go, Duncan's sword and dagger are good (and Maric's sword gets better if you sell it to Mikhael Dryden and then buy the upgraded version back from him), but I've personally never done anything with Cailan's armor except sell it. Or maybe I had Alistair equip his helmet and shield once. But Alistair's moments at Ostagar have some worth in being able to experience them, and so do Loghain's. Both experiences gain an extra dimension if you also bring Wynne, though if you don't like Wynne, that extra dimension may not be a welcome one. :)

It's a toss up...

If you do RtO earlier, then you can get access to Cailan's equipment sooner.

If you wait until you recruit Loghain, you can bring him along, though you won't get the items until you're almost done with the game.

While Cailan's armor is nice, there are alternatives, like the Juggernaut set or any of the sets crafted by Wade that can hold you over until then, if you really want to bring Loghain along. If you weren't planning on recruiting him, then I'd suggest doing RtO soon after Lothering.

Cailan's equipment is nice for any type of character that might wear massive armor.  The sword+shield will give you a nice boost to mana regen (when paired as a set), while the armor will give you health regen and has a nice fatigue reduction bonus.  Usually, during my playthroughs I'll have my main tank wear the equipment, as it will help them be more durable and the stamina regen is never a bad thing, as it will help them to always have the stamina for talents like war cry, holy smite, taunt, and etc.

I appreciate your opinion. I DO AGREE with you. I am not confused.

But I have heard from someone on the gamespot.com forums that Logain has some VERY interesting things to say if you wait until you recruit him before doing return to Ostagar.

I enjoy a good challenge to a game. So I am considering doing WITHOUT the effective items you gain from doing return to Ostagar, But only IF what I have heard is really as cool as they say about Logain, and his behavior/dialogue.

I like to look this from a story point of view. Going to Ostagar immediately after you escape Lothering makes no sense. "Hey, we've been gone for two days, wow it's snowing." I like to think it's been a few weeks or something. So I often do return to Ostagar kinda after the Landsmeet. Whoever you choose (Alistair/Loghain), it makes sense story wise to do it after the Landsmeet, so I say, yeah wait 'til you get Loghain

For coolness factor, go with Loghain. Alistair's bits are more on the sentimental side.

sorry to double post....

But AFTER you recruit Logain, is there really much left in the game? If there is only a few more hours of gameplay left, after recruting Logain, then I will NOT do this. I do not know how close to the END game it is, when you recruit Logain.

If someone could answer that question, it would help my decision. Thanks everyone,

After you recruit Loghain, you don't have much left besides any unfinished side quests, and then going after the Archdemon.

The Landsmeet is the last major part of the main story prior to the final part of the game.

Once you recruit Loghain, he may gain a level if you're lucky.  You don't have much flexibility with him unless you use a respec mod of some kind.

It depends on how much you leave undone before the Landsmeet. The first time I went to recruit Loghain, I didn't know if it might not be my *only* time to recruit Loghain, so I left as much undone in the game as possible, so I'd have as much time with him as possible. So after I recruited him, I still had many of the Orzammar sidequests to do, plus Flemeth, the High Dragon, the maleficarum in the warehouse in Denerim, Gaxkang the Unbound, Cadash Thaig, and possibly even the Alienage orphanage still to do. And then also Ostagar. As far as pure driving-the-story-forward stuff, no, there isn't a whole lot left, although there is still plenty of fighting in the Final Battle. So if you've done all that stuff I mentioned already, maybe you won't think it's worth it. I still would, though, given the other considerations you've mentioned.

hmm... Allot to consider. Thanks, so much everyone, you are all so great to share your valuable input.

I don't want to offend anyone by saying this, but I definitely DO prefer having Logain as my sword and shield tank, over Alistair.

Alistair has always annoyed me. I have never enjoyed his personality, or presence, however I absolutely love having a sword and shield tank.

Wynne, is going to be my primary mage, as a spirit healer/arcane warrior, with a two handed sword.

So I have not much interested in a two handed warrior.

If only there was a way to have Logain earlier, this would be nice.

Thanks, I will take all of this into consideration...

Totally not offended. I happen to agree with you. :)

Alas, there was actually a plan to make this possible once upon a time, but BioWare ditched it. Too bad.

Thanks, I will take all of this into consideration...

Have fun! And remember, there's always replays! :wizard:

Thank you! :-)

I know...... but..... I really hate replays. I want to do one solid, epic, thorough playthrough.

I am not much for replaying a game.

I just like to master it, if possible.

And I have already decided that the ultimate choice for my grey warden is to be a duel wielding backstabbing rogue, with a sword and shield tank, an archer, and an arcane warrior wielding a two handed sword in my party as the ultimate balance.

So, I was hoping for one sweeping, great playthrough with no regrets on any choices I made.

I guess you'd have to like Alistair's dry sense of humor to get attached to him. He seemed like a college buddy of sorts with my wardens, almost like a brother figure. Sure, he is overly sensitive and lets my warden call all of the shots, but it never really wore on me.

I recruited Loghain once, while still keeping Alistair on the throne, and I've never been inclined to recruit him again. It's just too bad that you don't get to recuit Loghain until the game is almost over and have to read the books to get his whole story.

Btw, you'll miss out on a lot if you only do one main playthrough.  There's 6 origin stories to play through, and the various outcomes of the main story quests.  There's also the various romances you can see with your companions.  I've done many playthroughs of this game over the past year, including Awakening and etc., and I'm having trouble putting Origins down to finally getting around to other games that I still have yet to start a playthrough.  Origins is addictive.

It's funny how different Alistair and Loghain are actually.

Alistair is clumsy, kind, little childish, but a very good friend IMO. Totally my best bromance in a BW game.

Loghain is a strategist, ruthless, business like, and can be loyal. He also is a very nice person.

It's all about what kind of person you prefer.

Loghain may seem nice unless you live in the Denerim Alienage or are one of the Bannorn.

When I compare Alistair to Logain, in my opinion, it is like comparing a drunken, party loving frat-boy (alistair) to a medieval, type of ancient Anglo-Saxon, or Celt type of brutal, calssic epic RPG warrior (Logain).

So for me, it is like choosing between a jock, or a legendary hero for my sword and shield tank.

Not nice that way, but what if you have him as a party member you see what I mean.

Loghain and Wynne have the best dialogue at RtO, IMO.

Dog will also comment there!

Yes. Loghain's Wynne dialogue is like the part most worth waiting to do RTO until last. Tis epic. :)

Not sure what's the best part about it. Loghain being awesome? Or Wynne finally being told to stfu?

In this case, they are one and the same, so you don't have to pick. :)
