I'm assuming the trailer is just showing that Earth is still divided and each country still has its own customs and language.

Aliens don't speak English but we have a universal translator which translates what they are saying into what we can understand.

this is incorrect. there is no built in translator or "translator microbes" (ala farscape). when you talk to an alien in game and he is speaking "english" it isn't english its the common trade language (this is stated in the Drew K Mass Effect books) that everyone speaks. if you load up ME2 go to Omega and listen you hear aliens speaking alien in the background noise which is cnosistant with what Grayson say goes on on Omega when his thoughts are used as a tool to explain to the reader how everyonen speaks to one another and mentions that on Omega not all the people there speak the common trade language.
edit: after looking it up further there are translators (http://masseffect.wi...wn_the_Sky]link[/url] but like I did say before. Grayson said there is a common trade language
edit 2: in Mass Effect Ascension page 47 in the first paragraph second sentince, "Unlike Council Space, aliens here refused to speak the common trade language unless absolutely ncessary."

The aliens aren't speaking English. I forget exactly how it works/what its called, but there is some kind of device that translates languages in the ME universe.
Yep. People have translator brain implants that translate stuff.
It's confirmed in the Thane romance. When Thane calls Shepard "siha", Shepard says "I think my translator skipped".

The Mass Effect 1 DLC titled 'Bring Down the Sky' explains the use of a built in auto-translator which is updated automatically as you travel from planet to planet. It also mentions that many aliens do learn enough english to do trade negotiations and what not.
That being said, I wouldn't completely trust any canon that comes from ME1, nevermind a DLC.

"2. Update Your Translators
The Citadel gets more than nine million tourists a week. You need to understand whether that drunk from Omega's enjoying the nightlife or telling his buddies to flank you."
So there.

there are translators (after I looked into it) link
but like I said in the original post (which is quoted a few above this) there is a common trade language. Mass Affect: Ascension page 47 Paragraph 1 Sentence 2 "Unlike Council Space, most aliens here refuse to speak the common trade language unless absolutely necessry."

I think the codex entry about translators mentions a common trade language as well, so I imagine you are correct.
That whole entry is basically a catch-22 on the whole language thing anyway. We don't really know if the aliens we are talking too are using a translator or not. I would assume Garrus and Tali don't, since they probably know english from dealing with other species, but I could be wrong. I would think Samara does since she has only ever been in Asari space until recently (although 'recently' is a funny concept with Asari), but I could be wrong again.

I know that there is an automatic translator, my OP was somewhat sarcastic. But why doesn't this turn on during the trailer? Hmm...?
Lol.
It was translated into text.
Besides, I just think it was for the cool factor (hot German girl).

He didn't really learn Prothean. It was given to him, and even then it was translated into English.

It's not translated, BW only did so as not to have to make up their own dead language. What shepard was hearing was genuine Protean, he just understood it without really knowing the language.
