They are speaking Galactic language. We hear it as English for the same reasons why in many movies non english-speaking nationalities are talking in the above-mentioned language even between themselves.
Proof? Well, I've heard Shepard telling somebody in-game something like "Now repeat that in Galactic, please". From the context of discussion, he was obviously referring to the language spoken by his chat partner.

One thing that's kind of interesting to me is that for my first couple of times talking with a hanar like Delan, I thought that was his(?) actual voice. xD It's just the synthesized voice the translator was using as it translated the flashes into something I could understand.

I believe Shepard was being a smartass when he/she said that. I think he said that to Alestia, the asari that was pretending to be a scientist on Peak 15.

Aliens don't speak English but we have a universal translator which translates what they are saying into what we can understand.

I'm assuming the trailer is just showing that Earth is still divided and each country still has its own customs and language.

this is incorrect. there is no built in translator or "translator microbes" (ala farscape). when you talk to an alien in game and he is speaking "english" it isn't english its the common trade language (this is stated in the Drew K Mass Effect books) that everyone speaks. if you load up ME2 go to Omega and listen you hear aliens speaking alien in the background noise which is cnosistant with what Grayson say goes on on Omega when his thoughts are used as a tool to explain to the reader how everyonen speaks to one another and mentions that on Omega not all the people there speak the common trade language.

The Mass Effect 1 DLC titled 'Bring Down the Sky' explains the use of a built in auto-translator which is updated automatically as you travel from planet to planet. It also mentions that many aliens do learn enough english to do trade negotiations and what not.

That being said, I wouldn't completely trust any canon that comes from ME1, nevermind a DLC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when we encounter batarians for the first time, they are engaging some War Beasts in their native language. The translator didn't have the necessary database? Oh ****, so come we've understood further batarians we've met?
That was one, two - the salarian game seller at the Citadel states that he heard a batarian talking in his native language in an online game.

I'm not fussed on films pretending everyone spoke English. Alexander the Great speaking in English with an Irish accent

even though I read the books and played games to two genres compliment and contradict eachother. its was said in the first novel that the "aliens" rush and translate the languages of new races so theres no misunderstandings like that of the FCW. But it also says that earth teaches council languages in its school so if they speak it why need a translator. It makes sense cause tali talks alot different from a samara who studied humans and other new spieces before leaving asari space so maybe thats why her "english" is so perfect" compared to tali who says weird quarian phrases that the translator doesnt bother to relate because it probably has no human meaning.

couple points to both people i've quoted here.

@Warkupo. Yeah I don't considering anything from ME1 dlc as anything close to canon as Bioware didn't develope (I know for sure) the Pinacle Station dlc and I think (but not sure) the Bring down the Sky either.

@FERMi27. on the subject of the batarians saying that in their native tongue and us (the player) not understanding it doesn't make sense from a translator standponit as not 15 minutes later when you finish the third plasma torch you speak to and understand a group of 3 batarians. and then again when you are talking to ballak (lead batarian, name might be wrong).

so like I was saying its more cannon to think of it all as a common trade language as if there was a translator you would always understand what someone says and Bosh'tet would come across to you as that but as whatever the insult means in english.

Auto translator programs are installed automatically in each omnitool (a device that everyone has by the time ME takes place), periodic updates are made as the languages evolve...

Said translator programs turn words in alien languages in a format the user understands (Garrus for instance ears Shepard speaking in Turian, Mordin ears him speaking Salarian, etc...).

If I'm not mistaken this is what happens... ;P
