When DA:O first came out, I purchased both the PS3 version as well as the PC version.  However, I never actually installed the PC version, but did play the PS3 version (loved it!!).  I had all these high hopes of using the toolset to create machinima, and mods, etc... Just never got around to it.

lately I've been playing around with the NWN2 toolset, and it dawned on me that I had the DA:O one as well, which I imagine to have much more capability.  However, I'm not too sure about the complexity and ease of use of it compared to the NWN2 editor.

So I'm hoping to spend some time this weekend mucking about with it, but have a few concerns.  Did the toolset come with the physical game or do I have to download it somewhere?  I imagine I'll have some patches to go through before I can actually start using it?

I saw something about an external or additional DB download for it as well?  Where is that explained?

And finally is it possible to open up campaign levels, not to edit or change, but to study for reference?

building levels, writing dialogues, scripting and creating blueprints are almost the same. the only true difference between those toolsets is the cinematic editor, but i would not go that far and call one toolset more complex then the other. if you are able to work with the nwn2 toolset it should not be that hard to switch. btw the toolset can be found here (for registered users) or from external sources.

if you're lucky the installation process will run through without issues. if not there are dozens of threads and guides around to help you out.

the official level files are there. the rest (area files, dialogues, scripts and so on) are stored within the database and are accessed with the toolset.

I know only the DA toolset, not the NWN2 toolset. But compared to the NWN2 toolset I have often heared that the DAO toolset is ...well, let´s say, more challenging.
Surely others will stretch this topic and go a bit more in depth.

So, here are some first quick hints:
You can ownload the DA toolset here http://social.biowar...page/da-toolset
I recommend to have look in the toolset wiki, especially the section about installation:
http://social.biowar...Getting_Started
And here you can download Single player and core module resources source files which Bioware made availaible: http://social.biowar...ect/1331/#files
This includes level files as well but without lightmaps.

the name of the file should tell you which one you need. if you only want to look up the levels in the toolset you want to download only the layout files.

if you don't know what you want, then download every file and extract it to a place you like. in your case i would start with the toolset and the lightmapper. you will also need python installed to work with the lightmapper. detailed instructions can be found here.

to get started is a bit complicated in comparison to other toolsets/sdks but that's how it is. in the worst case scenario you have to read tons of text just to get this damn thing started :D

No. Maybe the area layout visual index will give you another clue what you want to download. Nothing to install. Level files are art resources. Extract a level file, save it where ever you want and open it in the toolset. You have to save it under a different name before you can start to customize the level.

To meet the daily requirements, the FDA proposes that Americans drink a can of soda every hour, on the hour, for eight hours. This is the best and most foolproof way to get the recommended daily amount of soda needed for an overall healthy existence.
