They make all this optional stuff and they give you all these extra choices and missions to play if you're willing to pay. That's all well and dandy if you view it as a good thing (I don't). But I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't spit in anyone's face by opting out on these options.
We were given this "option" and I want to know how it's going to play out in the start of my game. It's simple enough.

Yeah, but he had sources. You need to appreciate that level of pedantry. I know I do.Cainne Chapel wrote...

I think it's both. At the same time. (except for those not wearing undergarments)khevan wrote...

Given how extreme the events of Arrival are, I don't think it's just as simple as saying that they're assumed to have happened.
Starting the game by telling people that their character, unknown to them, wiped out a star system and is on trial for mass murder is a bit problematic.

What other option do they have, exactly? What's going to be the explanation of how the Alpha Relay was destroyed and that particular excursion stopped, since apparantly the only people that knew about it were indoctrinated? And they can't just say it never happened, since it screws up the timeline - the Reapers would have arrived sooner and Shepard wouldn't even be on Earth.
If you've made the choice not to buy Arrival, that's your perogative, but the events still happened. Deal with it.

It's not a problem for me, because I'm thoroughly spoiled. But I'd guess most people who are importing from ME2 probably don't even know the Arrival DLC exists, so Bioware will need to write things carefully if it's not going to be a major WTF moment for a lot of people

Why are you so stubborn? It's great extra content... they're not just going to hand it out for free.
Not everyone is a cash cow. Also im sure im not the only one, many just loathe the concept of DLC.
What happened to the good ol' Expansions?

Zaeed? Kasumi? Liara becoming the [spoiler here]? Arrival?
I didn't play any of these. I'm never going to play any of these until they start handing them out for free or in a big package deal. So what happens to my game at the start of ME3? One of these was even apparently critical to the beginnig narative of ME3.

Well, Jack Bauer isn't supposed to be your character. And, I'd guess, major character defining moments don't happen in minor little side elements outside the main show. So it's not entirely the same.
Game On: How would you describe the Mass Effect series to someone who's never played it?
Casey Hudson: To me, it's a huge science fiction universe in the style of the big science fiction properties like Star
Trek and Star Wars, though more targeted at an adult experience. We're trying to create something that's an entire universe people can immerse themselves in, but also something for the mature demographic that wants an adult story. That's why we've take Jack Bauer approach to Commander Shepard [the series protagonist]. We've tried to present you with agonizing choices as you navigate your way through the sequel and built that into a bigger, much darker story.
