My game runs really fast -- all the loading times are lightning quick.  EXCEPT for when I am moving my character or talking to NPCs.  The funny thing is, it's not lag.  It's not choppy or laggy, everything is very smooth and pretty, but it's slow.  Characters will deliver their lines pefectly (no stuttering) then wait several seconds before continuing; moving the PC character is like running through molassess.  Happens on every single graphic setting and I have a (I think?) fairly decent computer.

Specs:
Intel® Corei3 processor, 3.2 ghz (2 core)
8 GBs RAM
Windows 7 64-bit
Nvidia Geforce GT 520, 1GB VRAM

Help?  I've looked everywhere, and the only thing I found was advice telling me to roll back my drivers, which did not work.

You have an entry level GPU that's not suited to gaming that will be your problem. what graphics settings and resolution are you using?

You think it's the CPU? It's an actually an upgrade from my old one, which was only 2.5 ghz. It also runs other games, like Mass Effect, perfectly @ the highest settings.

It also actually doesn't matter which graphic settings (highest or lowest, have tried them all) I run it on -- dialogue is slow.

Thanks so much for your reply. Maybe I should upgrade the CPU?

A 2.5 GHz processor is just fine. What is not just fine is picking on a "20" performance level, instead of a "40", or a "50", for a graphics card.

Moondoggie said GPU, not CPU. Your CPU is fine. GPU is Graphics Processor Unit, (Graphics Card). I'm not that familiar with that Video Card so I won't comment. But I do agree that it is Video related, either the card is not good enough or the drivers are a problem. There are several threads about Video Drivers and which to use with DA:O. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS driver version 270.61 that I'm running on a Windows 7 64 bit system and It works fine. That does not mean it will work for you, I've heard other say that same driver crashes their game so beware. Always be prepared to roll back or replace any drivers when you take some-one's advice here including mine...

Good Luck,
GW

Ah, sorry for the misunderstanding. Thanks for the very helpful replies, everyone.

I guess I'll just replace the GPU; it came with the computer, and I thought it would be decent... Guess not. ;) Thanks again.

ETA: For anyone else looking for a solution to a similar problem, I was able to solve the problem by installing the Geforce 270.61 driver and throttling back the resolution from widescreen to 4:3, as per Ghost_Writer and Gorath Alpha's instructions.  The best way to deal with it, though, is to buy a video card that can handle the game.  So, I swapped the card for the one in my husband's computer, a Geforce GTX 580.  Works really well now (at least, until he finds out). :)

The Geforce GT 420 isn't exactly a "terrible" choice for a graphics card, but neither is it even a "fair" one. The Geforce 210 / 310 now, those are very very BAD. If you are willing to dial the screen resolution low, and the image quality low as well, it may work somewhat for you, although I am sure it wouldn't satisfy me that way, and that most definitely isn't what the game's designers had in mind when they created this game .  .
